WORKING HARDER OR SMARTER TO SUCCEED

Barbara Schein, a grandmother aged of 50, made it through four and one half months of
physical training to become the first woman of her age to fulfill all requirements as a
police officer. She had always wanted to do police work, but they didnt take many
women when she was younger. So she settled for being a homemaker, rearing two
daughters, and selling insurance part-time.

Later, she inquired again about police career but found she was over the states age;
limit of 35. For the next 12 months, she did part-time work as a special officer directing
traffics and helping maintain order at the basketball games. When the age limit was
labeled discriminatory and dropped, Mrs. Schein passed a written test and tried for an
opening with the Police Force.

At five feet tall, she was trim from daily exercise. But the police academy was grueling.
After running up to five miles a day and performing calisthenics, she came home
exhausted and irritable.
She graduated with 91 others, almost all of whom gave her full support and approval as
a fellow officer. Her chief says most of the 15 officers she works with today have
accepted her, and believes she can handle her own
