Leadership Development Plan

When one asks about my True North I can truly depict that my purpose in life is to lead and
provide assistance to my great community. As an individual who has worked tirelessly from my days
of childhood to my days of public service I can proudly say that I was put on this earth to serve.
Rotary International has a 4 way test that states, First, is it the truth Second, is it fair to all
concerned third, will it build good will and better friendships & Fourth, will it be beneficial to all
concerned this has been a way of life that I too have managed my life to assure that my service to
my community as mayor has been well warranted. I know on a daily basis many people are tested
with their values and morals in general. I however have learned that respect, honesty & integrity are
the principles and guidelines in which I live my life by. Im eternally grateful for the foundation that
my family has set for me to follow and succeed in life to serve my city and its great citizens. Within
this document I will set fourth my continued leadership plan to assure ultimate success.
Intellectual Development: As part of my intellectual development I would like to deepen it much
further and enrich the importance of living abroad to enhance my knowledge of other cultures and
ways of life. I can attest that as a resident of the Texas Mexico Border I have fully captured the
importance of the Mexican American culture, a very Rich and diverse way of life that shows many to
give of their life and provide for others. I would further look to embark upon my love for reading and
enhancing the opportunities to read more especially in the realm of politics in America and other
countries.
Personal discipline and stress management: serving as Mayor of a large border city one can always
take on a bit much and try to do more than normal. My days are long and stressful but I always find a
way to relax and take a deep breath at the end of the day. Managing my time is of the utmost
importance for any profession and in mine no less. I will look towards having a daily walk and run in
the evening to distress and assure that my health is not deterred from the over worked and underpaid
position that I hold. I will work toward shaving a better sleep regimen and assure that my practices
for health better with a stronger diet and health plan. Within this time, I will look towards having
some spiritual reflection and assure that my faith maintains my love for my God and hope for
spiritual guidance to assure that my decision making process is of the utmost responsible and well-
being for all.
Values, leadership principles and ethical boundaries: Now at days, we look for people to work with
that have high values and strong morals. In politics no less this is a must! When I see that there are
people who work with me and that are not of high ethics I begin to worry because ultimately we all
are working for the residents of this great city and must assure that we are all as ethical as possible. I
live by three golden principles: respect, honesty & integrity, I say respect first because without it
there is no honesty and without honesty there is no integrity.
Motivations and motivated capabilities: I have come to the conclusion that we all have our very own
extrinsic and intrinsic motivations. I possess the motivations of the satisfaction of doing a great job,
helping others, being true to my beliefs, making a difference, and then there is the egotistical side that
loves being associated with prestigious organizations and receiving public recognition. Who doesnt
appreciate that? I know that all in all I must work to enhance the way that I deliver some of my
directives and learn to appreciate and be more understanding of others. This I will work towards to be
a more effective listener and understand my colleagues.
Personal reflections: Earlier I reflected upon my spiritual beliefs and motivation to move forward
because of said reflection. In politics one can be left alone at times and that can be a very difficult
time. When that occurs one must turn to God and ask what your purpose is and how to fulfill his
mission. I intend to strengthen my practice of faith and assure that I will continue to follow on the
path of god and work for the good of all his people.
Building Relationships: As an individual who serves his community relationships are key and
essential to moving forward. First the relationships that I have with my family are always the most
important as they are my backbone and my strength to lift me when I am down and work hard to
make sure that I continue to serve with integrity for my city. My Mother is the one who is above all
the best mentor and guide I could ask for. Her words of wisdom and guidance always help me to
make the best decision when in doubt. Her famous words to me are, If you can sleep at night, then
know you made the right decision. With that said I will work to better the relationships that I have
and foster new ones to garner a new sense of trust for others and work toward shaving a stronger
group of mentors.
Leadership style: Leaders are best defined as people who can move and guide others to a place where
they want to be and not where they want to go. I consider myself to be a strong leader who can gather
followers to embrace leadership and take on the challenges of tomorrow. So with that said, I will
collaborate more with others and strengthen the community barriers that we have so not just our city
can advance but our community as a whole. Leadership development will take place on my part by
bringing many others together to join me in my cause and work for a better and common goal all in
all enhancing our city and my leadership capabilities.
Integration: The integration of work and family is of the utmost importance. I have given much time
to work but I have taken from the time of my family. During this integration I will look towards
having more family integrated time and still manage to get my job done. Family is and always should
be first and this course and case study has allowed me to fully understand that.
Leadership purpose & legacy: When I think of what my legacy should be I see a legacy of service
with accomplishments. My legacy will not only reflect upon me but it will reflect upon the work of a
team. As Mayor of my city and any other possible position Im afforded to have at a later date, if any.
I want people to remember me as a man who worked hard and strived to assure that his community
was given every fighting chance to excel just as other cities of his size were. I want my city to
remember me as an individual who never thought he was better than they were just because he was
mayor but for them to remember that he was a better mayor because all of them encouraged him to
succeed and move forward with progress and development.
As I complete my Leadership Development plan, I will share that my life has been a great one
because of the people who have walked alongside of me and the people who tried to run me down.
Those people in particular were the ones who made me stronger to fight for my city and to strengthen
my development as a leader so that my citizens knew that we all fought this together. I thank each of
them for encouraging me and thank God for giving me the courage and wisdom to move forward and
striving for excellence in leadership!
