St.

Clair Shores Police Department officers shot and

killed Lexie, a 44-pound mixed-breed dog in the early
morning hours of Nov. 22, 2013.
The officers were dispatched to the area of Princeton
Street as a result of a barking/loose dog complaint that
eventually escalated into the shooting.
The incident sparked a heated controversy in the city
, which led to an internal investigation into the shooting
by the St. Clair Shores Police Department, contentious
city council meetings and additional training.
Now, Lexies owner, Brittany Preston, has filed a fed-
eral lawsuit at the U.S. District Court for the Eastern
District of Michigan against the city, officers David
Jacquemain and Jeremy Moskwa, and animal control
officer Tom Massey, alleging the officers violated her
Fourth Amendment rights.
The Fourth Amendment protects citizens from the
government unreasonably seizing or destroying prop-
erty.
Prestons attorney, Chris Olson, said the police dash
camera, obtained from a Freedom of Information Act
request, clearly recorded an officer saying, The only
thing Im going to do is shoot it. I do not like dogs. I
dont do snares. I dont do dogs. Ill shoot the <exple-
tive> thingIm gonna shoot it anyway.
Officers shot Lexie three times about 20 minutes lat-
er, Olson said in a press release, claiming the dog
charged at them.
Prestons grandfather, who was on
the scene, immediately refuted the offi-
cers claim, Olson said, then the offi-
cers proceeded to shoot Lexie a fourth
time while she hid in the bushes of
Prestons grandfathers house.
Massey, the citys animal control offi-
cer, arrived about 20 minutes later, and snared
Lexie, who walked to the animal control truck, in
front of neighbors, the release said.
According to Masseys log, he left the scene at about
9:30 a.m., more than two
hours after Lexie had
been shot, Olson said.
The report also stated
that Lexies body was not
removed from the truck
until 3 p.m.
A necropsy was performed on
Le xi e and the results of this stated that the
City council wasted little time responding to the law-
suit filed against the city by Lexie's owner, Brittany
Preston, at its July 21 gathering.
I know residents have brought their concerns to
me, mayor pro tem Candice Rusie said. I would like
the city attorney to address some of these concerns
right at the forefront of the meeting.
Ihrie began a lengthy statement as members of the
audience, many of whom were there to show support
to Preston and Lexie, listened.
The issue that arose last November, when Lexie
was shot, was taken to heart, and taken very seriously
by city council, Ihrie said. The police department and
the city council has taken many steps to deal with this
issue. The lawsuit that was filed would tend to make
statements, and I would ask everyone to understand
that not everything that is issued in a press release by a
plaintiffs lawyer, or gets put into a lawsuit, is necessar-
ily true, or completely true, or accurate.
Ihrie went on to outline some of the changes the de-
partment has made since the shooting.
There are very few matters that the police depart-

foreclosure properties,
two structures and two

just more than $20,000.
The cost is the culmina-

Council approved the

The program has been
in existence for about five
years and allows the city
to purchase property
from Macomb County, re-
hab these properties, in
many cases, then sell
them.
A foreclosure subcom-
mittee was formed to
oversee the program.
In the past, the city has
purchased dozens of
properties, Community
Devel opment and
Inspection director Chris
Rayes said. We are of-
fered these by the county
treasure as an all-or-
nothing package. If we
turn them down, theyre
auctioned off.
The city is not allowed
to choose amongst the
properties and doesnt
get the opportunity to in-
spect them with much de-
tail.
Although the program
has been controversial to
some, counci l man
Anthony Tiseo sees the
merits.
Sometimes we do

its been above water.
It looks like we should

ment goes through that do
not end up being a learn-
ing experience, he said. I
believe that the city, and
the police department, has
taken a number of steps.
With respect to the shoot-
ing of Lexie, I know that
the police department,
without getting into the
details, there were educa-
tional processes that were
set up. All police officers,
since that incident, have
undergone three video
training sessions. They are
planning, this fall, to have
a live education process by
an organization that is
equipped to teach police
officers issues related to
animal control.
A review of equipment
within the police depart-
ment, in terms of animal
control, was also noted by
the longtime city attorney.
The formation of the
Ani mal Wel f ar e
Committee was another
point Ihrie brought up to
the audience.
The city established an
animal welfare committee,
he explained. I know that
not everybody is satisfied
at this point with every-
thing that has occurred in
that particular committee.
But that committee is go-
ing to be around for a long
time. I anticipate there will
be some back and forth
and some learning that
will occur on both sides of
the ledger.
Some of the details,
namely comments alleg-
edly made by one of the
officers on the scene were
addressed as well by Ihrie.
At this point, the city is
in receipt of paperwork
filed by the plaintiff in that
lawsuit which asks the city
of St. Clair Shores to give
the plaintiff, Brittany
Preston, $1 million. The
city will defend that law-
suit, Ihrie said. And de-
spite press releases, and
while I do not intend to de-
bate the merits, or lack of
merits, of anybodys con-
duct, or that lawsuit, indel-
icate language was used
that night by one of the po-
lice officers, but what did
not happen, and what was
implied, and I want to be
sure that it is clear and un-
derstood, that this did not
happen. Police did not get
called to the scene, get to
the scene, make indelicate
comments, and shoot
Lexie.
I would encourage
those who have devel-
oped opinions based
merely upon what they
read on either Facebook
or in a lawsuit, Ihrie said.
I will say this, plaintiffs
lawyers are very creative,
and plaintiffs lawyers
have the ability to say
what they want to say and
leave out other things.
Ihrie ended his state-
ment by making it very
clear that he, the city
council and others within
the city will be very reluc-
tant to address the issue
going forward.
Reasonable minds can
differ as to what conduct
should have occurred that
night, and reasonable
minds will conduct to dif-
fer about that. Since the
court system has been in-
voked, We will deal with
this matter in the court
system, he said. I would
ask for patience and un-
derstanding from those
who are interested in this
issue.

dog had a total of 15 bullet
wounds, eight entry
wounds and seven exit
wounds.
Police admit to firing on-
ly five shots at the dog, four
which struck her and one
that missed their target.
The necropsy also re-
ports the likely cause of
death as bleed out.
Police responded to a
barking dog complaint
saying that they were just
going to shoot it anyway.
Minutes later, they did ex-
actly what they said they
would do they repeatedly
shot Lexie in front of my
clients grandfather. Police
claim that Lexie charged
them. My clients grandfa-
ther immediately refuted
the polices claim. Police
then continued their ef-
forts to kill Lexie by shoot-
ing her again as she hid in
the bushes posing no
threat to them. Lexie was
alive when she then
walked to the animal con-
trol van, Olson said. The
necropsy shows that Lexie
was shot several more
times after she was put in-
to the animal control van.
The City wanted Lexie
dead and it used its power
to kill her.
Despite pleas from
Justice for Lexie support-
ers to conduct a third-par-
ty investigation into the in-
cident, the city conducted
an internal investigation
that resulted in disciplin-
ary action for the officers
involved.
Massey was suspended
without pay for one
month, while the police of-
ficers involved faced con-
sequences that included
counseling for one of the
officers and a letter of dis-
cipline entered into his file
for the other one.
Additional training for
the entire department in
regards to dealing with
similar situations with ani-
mals in the field was also a
result of the investigation.
No charges were filed
against anyone involved
with the incident.
Olson claims that at
least seven additional bul-
let wounds have yet to ex-
plained.
It looks like someone
used her for target prac-
tice while she was in ani-
mal control custody,
Olson said.
Preston is looking for
compensatory damages,
according to court docu-
ments.
It is unreasonable to
show up for a barking dog
complaint with an ex-
pressed premeditated in-
tent to shoot her and then
to repeatedly shoot her,
Olson said. When Lexie
did not die, they apparent-
ly took her and shot her
several more times. We are
asking the Court to hold
the defendants account-
able for violating the
Constitution and my cli-
ents civil rights.
Ultimately, we want justice
for Lexie.
For more than two de-
cades the Yardeners of St.
Clair Shores have been
showing off some of the
communitys finest gar-
dens.
This year, their annual
garden tour, the 21st, is
slated to begin at 9 a.m.
Saturday, Aug. 2, with
registration at the
S e l i n s k y - G r e e n
Farmhouse Museum.
Weve got six gardens
on the tour this year,
Yardeners member
Laurel Fowler said. We
like to present Earth-
friendly gardens, which
means as little use of fer-
tilizer and chemicals as
possible. If you do use fer-
tilizer, we want more to-
ward the natural forms of
fertilizer, and lake-safe
fertilizer.
Fowler added many of
the gardens on the tour
use rain barrels, compost-
ing, raised beds, fairy gar-
dens, fruit trees, flowers
and many have native
plants.
We really like to pro-
mote native planting, she
said. Thats something
that we really like to see. I
think people taking the
tour are really going to
enjoy the variety and the
creativity in each garden.
The way the tour is set
up, patrons are given a
map to each of the six lo-
cations, which they can
then visit at anytime be-
tween the start of the tour
and 3 p.m. that afternoon.
Its a self-guided tour,
Fowler said. They can
visit the homes in any or-
der they want. The home-
owners are going to be
there all day and welcom-
ing everyone who is on
the tour.
Fowler said one unique
benefit of the tour is the
interaction between the
gardener and the tour
members.
These homeowners
are always willing to an-
swer questions, she said.
I think its a great place
for people to get ideas for
their own garden, and
then be able to ask that
person directly about it.
Thats a great feature of
the garden tour.
Also featured at this
years garden tour is a
Plein-Air Painters,
event.
This event will show-
case the talents of the
Great Lakes Pastel
Society and the Lakeside
Palette Club. Members of
these groups will be using
various mediums to paint,
sketch and pastel the gar-
den. These works of art
will be available for pur-
chase.
Tickets to the tour can
be purchased at the
Selinsky-Green museum
the morning of the event
for $5 for adults, children
are free, Fowler said.

Gimpy
Gimpy was found in a field in Detroit after some-
one witnessed him being tossed out the side door
of a van. A good Samaritan brought him to Mutts
of Motown where it was clear he had a badly bro-
ken leg. When veterinarians performed a surgical
procedure on him to fix the leg properly, it was dis-
covered that the injury was so old that it had
healed improperly and was beyond repair. Thanks
to plenty of TLC and proper care, Gimpy is using
the leg again, but it will never be perfect. Gimpy is
about a year old and weighs about 30 pounds. He
would love nothing more than to find a loving for-

You started working on that
tan (tsk, tskl), and looking in the
mirror, you see white, pink or
light brown blotches. Te likely
culprit is tinea versicolor.
Tinea versicolor occurs when
M. furfur, a yeast which usually
exists peacefully on just about
all of us as part of our natural
fora, fnds conditions just right
to become an opportunistic
pathogen. Basically, when the
temperature and humidity go
up, and we sweat more, this
normally benign yeast can cause
an infection that afects the skins
ability to tan, appearing most
commonly on the chest, back
and upper arms.
Clinical presentation of tinea
versicolor is distinctive, and
the diagnosis is usually made
by the physician without the
need for any additional tests.
While patients of any age may
contract tinea versicolor, it most
commonly afects teens and
young adults whose sebaceous
glands are more active. Tinea
versicolor is not considered to be
contagious because the causative
pathogen is a normal inhabitant
of our skin.
Tinea versicolor is typically
treated with a combination of
antifungal washes and topical
medications. For patients where
the condition is chronic, oral
medications may also be used.
It is not unusual for the
condition to recur afer clearing.
Patients with a history of tinea
verscolor are advised to keep
cool and dry to reduce the
potential for additional infection.

Our entire family is
humbled.
Incumbent 40th District
Court judge, Joseph Oster,
spoke those words to a
crowd of hundreds who
had gathered in the park-
ing lot of the citys new
courthouse for the dedica-
tion of the building to his
late father, longtime judge
Craigen J. Oster.
Craigen J. Oster served
as the citys associate mu-
nicipal court judge for
three years before being
elected to the position in
1973. He was later elected
to the bench at the 40th
District Court when the
city switched to the district
court system.
Oster passed away in
2003.
Mayor Kip Walby em-
ceed the event and proud-
ly stood before residents,
Macomb County dignitar-
ies and even Michigan
Supreme Court Justice
David Viviano, and boast-
ed about the late judges
history, dedication to pub-
lic service and legacy.
Viviano, a former St.
Clair Shores resident, also
spoke of Osters legacy at
the event.
This is a fitting tribute,
Viviano said. It really is.
The ceremony was
capped off with a formal
ribbon cutting officially
opening the $3 million-
plus facility, and followed
by a tour of the court-
house, led by Walby and
members of the city coun-
cil.
I, as mayor, am proud
of it, Walby said of the
40th District Court build-
ing. We were practical
and efficient. We wanted
to be good stewards of the
taxpayers' money.
As the tour continued,
members of the city coun-
cil, along with the
Historical Commission,
placed a time capsule in
the wall of the new facility.
Earlier in the day, as part
of the local television show
The Mayors Corner,
Walby, Oster and others
opened the time capsule
that was placed inside the
wall of the old courthouse
nearly 40 years earlier.
The time capsule con-
tained documents, bro-
chures and newspapers
from the late 70s.
The time capsule placed
inside the walls of the new
courthouse is rumored to
contain similar items rele-
vant to life today in the
city.
My father loved this
city, Oster said.

Gardens &
Sculpture Park in Grand
Rapids is a consolidation
of experiences for the
senses.
First and foremost the
gardens and park are a vi-
sual experience, said
Joseph Becherer, vice pres-
ident and chief curator of
the 134-acre horticultural
and art expanse. But the
other senses are in for a
treat as well.
A walk in the park is a
wonderful thing, he said.
Either walking or riding
a tram on trails varying
from one mile to 2 1/2
miles, visitors can touch a
tall bronze horse, smell the
fragrances of native
Michigan and Midwestern
plants and thousands of
annuals and perennials,
hear water tumbling from
fountains and a waterfall
and squeals from children
in a garden built just to
their size.
The interactive chil-
drens garden includes a
sand quarry to learn about
fossils, sites to build bridg-
es, explore tree houses,
visit a log cabin, walk a
butterfly labyrinth and
peek into a child-size bea-
ver lodge. Child-oriented
sculptures are surrounded
by natural wetlands and 10
areas.
Children gravitate to the
Great Lakes Garden: an
outline of the five lakes
built for toddlers and
young children to learn
about the lakes. Plastic
boats are supplied and can
be floated, or pushed, from
Lake Ontario to Lake
Superior or down Lake
Michigan. Getting wet is a
given.
The childrens garden is
bordered by the (Gwen)
Frostic Woodland Shade
Garden. That leads the vis-
itor to Michigans Farm
Garden with farm animal
sculptures, a 1930s family
farm with an heirloom veg-
etable garden, orchard,
barn, sugar shack, pro-
duce stand, windmill and a
replica of Lena Meijers
(Frederik Meijers wife)
childhood farmhouse.
Opening in 2015 will be
the Richard and Helen De
Vos Japanese Garden lo-
cated at the northeast end
of the park.
The Frederik Meijer
Gardens & Sculpture Park
is probably best known for
the 24-foot bronze cast of
Leonardo da Vincis ana-
tomically correct horse,
unveiled in 1999. It took
Meijers backing to bring
The American Horse
concept into being by
sculptor Nina Akamu.
After a second bronze was
cast for Milan, Italy, the
mold was destroyed. It is
the centerpiece sculpture
of the De Vos Van Andel
Piazza and culminates
with a tram ride during
which visitors see cre-
ations by Chakai Booker,
Roxy Paine, Antony
Gormley, Henry Moore,
Sophie Ryder, Auguste
Rodin, George Segal,
Magdalena Abakanowicz,
Jonathan Borofsky, Mark
di Suvero, and Claes
Oldenburg, among others.
Beginning
The gardens and park
began as a collaboration
between the West
Michigan Horticultural
Society and Frederik and
Lena Meijer.
The story started out in
the 1980s with a long
standing interest in botani-
cal gardens in West
Michigan, Becherer said.
West Michigan was an
obvious choice because of
the extensive produce-pro-
ducing acreage.
Betsy Borre was presi-
dent of the Horticultural
Society. She approached
Fred Meijer. They needed
two things an angel and
they needed land,
Becherer said.
Because of Meijers
business he and his fa-
ther created Meijer Thrifty
Acres the company had
significant land holdings
and knowledge of acquir-
ing land, Becherer said.
Lena Meijer was inter-
ested in flowers and plants
and gardens. Freds pas-
sion was sculpture, he
said.
A marriage of the two
horticulture and sculpture
began in 1990 when
Meijer made a commit-
ment of property and gift-
ed land holdings to the so-
ciety. Meijers collection of
Marshall Fredericks
bronze sculptures could
now be seen by the public.
The two had built a rela-
tionship when Meijer com-
missioned Frederick to
create a sculpture based
on Hans Christian
Andersen stories for
Meijers hometown,
Greenville.
They (the Meijer fami-
ly) are down to earth and
approachable. They live
modestly. They are giving
back to the community,
Becherer said.
In April 1995, the gar-
dens and park were
opened at 1000 East
Beltline. Michigans larg-
est tropical conservatory
greeted guests, plus three
indoor theme gardens,
outdoor gardens, nature
trails and a boardwalk,
sculpture galleries and a
permanent sculpture col-
lection. The 15,000 square
foot glass house is home to
tropical plants from five
continents, as well as the
gift shop, cafe, auditorium,
library and two meeting
rooms.
Beginning with 71 acres
donated by Meijer, the now
enlarged park is barrier
free and handicap accessi-
ble.
It began with 36 or 37
sculptures, mostly
Marshall Frederick. It was
his (Meijer) own taste. We
have 300 works and the
visitation has expanded,
Becherer said.
To date, some seven mil-
lion visitors have had their
senses stimulated by view-
ing 300 sculptures situated
both outside and inside,
heard a multitude of birds
chirping among the natu-
ral vegetation habitats and
inhaled the fragrances of
trees, flowers and shrubs.
When it opened in 1995,
the estimate was to host
78,000 people annually. In
actuality, annually 600,000
people visit. And, Becherer
said, last week, he just said
goodbye to 110 Chinese
visitors.
It is a national destina-
tion, he said.
A destination to see
eight colossal pieces de-
fined as standing more
than 23 feet tall, including
the Alexander Liberman
42-foot tall titled Aria.
In one such grassy
meadow is California-born
Deborah Butterfields
mare. The sculpture began
as wood scraps from an
old barn and drift wood.
Becherer said the sculp-
ture was built, taken apart
piece by piece and cast in
bronze. A chemical was
applied to produce the fad-
ed wooden color and to
make it weather-proof be-
cause the grounds are
open 362 days a year. The
mare is tucked between
the De Vos Van Andel
Piazza where the well-
known 24-foot tall da Vinci
bronze horse stands and
the sculpture park.
Nearly every year since
its opening, a new attrac-
tion has been added. In
2000, indoor galleries were
opened and the carnivo-
rous plant house opened in
2001. Another 200 acres
was gifted in the spring of
2014 from the Meijer fami-
ly.
While the site and sights
have a secure future, today
people can come for both
the art and horticultural
experiences and see how
the two come together har-
moniously in a pleasant
day trip, Becherer said.

The Meijer sculpture park is known for the 24-foot bronze cast of Leonardo da
Vincis anatomically correct horse, at left, unveiled in 1999. It took 500 years and
Meijers backing to bring the concept to life by Nina Akamu, called The American
Horse. Deborah Butterelds mare sculpture, above, began as scraps and drift-
wood. Towering 42-feet tall, below, is the Alexander Leaderman Aria. It is one of
nine sculptures that stand more then 23-feet tall in the Frederik Meijer Gardens &
Sculpture Park. Young visitors are encouraged to play among the children of the
world statues, below right, that act as an entrance into the childrens garden.

the day, 4 Paws 1 Heart
hosted its Walk and Run
Fur Fun 5K event, with reg-
istration in the Fishbones
Rhythm Cafe parking lot.
Ive brought my dog,
my mom brought her dog,
and were going to take a
little walk this morning,
St. Clair Shores resident
Maggie Culich said.
Brooklyn (her dog) and I
need the exercise, and it is
supporting a really good
cause.
Pet adoptions, a water-
melon eating contest, a
family fishing derby and
the Ultimate Air Dogs
were all part of the week-
ends attractions.
Patrons had a few sug-
gestions for organizers,
however, they hope can be
applied to next years
event.
Im feeling bad because
the weather wasnt very
good yesterday, Harris
Francis said, while watch-
ing the Ultimate Air Dogs
show in the parking lot of
Blossom Heath Inn
Sunday afternoon. And
Im sure that kept some
people away. But they cant
control that. Aside from
that, I would just like to see
things more centrally lo-
cated. That would be my
suggestion.
LaDonna Marquis had
more than a few ideas on
how to make the 2015 fes-
tival even better than this
years version.
Get these businesses in-
volved, she said. Have
some sidewalk sales, some
samples from these restau-
rants outside, or some-
thing like that. I want to
walk down the entire road-
way, but why should I do
that? There wasnt enough
going on between the plac-
es with the signs. That
would be my thought.
Overall though, despite
the weather issues that
plagued Saturdays events,
Sylvester Grayson was
pleased.
Im just an average
Joe, he said. I wanted to
come here and have a nice
time with my wife and my
sons. We did that.

THURSDAY, JULY 24, 2014 ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION 7A
MY VI EW By Diane Morelli
OPINION
riftwood is
often used
in art proj-
ects. This
summer I
used driftwood to make
deck railing in my back-
yard. I call it my work of
art its an art of imper-
fection.
The driftwood literally
brings a great nautical
feel to the yard. The
wood has either been
lapped by or has been
drifting over the waves of
Lake St. Clair for many
moons. And possibly
some were swept ashore
after being ravished by
waves during a drift from
the Great Lake Huron
its a mystery.
I found the driftwood
piled up among many
larger pieces by the curb
on Jefferson in St. Clair
Shores. The wood looked
to have been placed there
after a beach cleanup was
done before the start of
summer.
I had planned to make
the deck railing out of
birch wood logs and sticks
I was collecting. But I
changed my mind after I
saw the driftwood placed
by the deck and after a
quick search on eBay dis-
closed three medium-
sized pieces of driftwood
sold for $20.
I went back to Jefferson
the next day to collect
more.
A lot of the driftwood
had been taken, but my fa-
vorite piece was still there
the widest log I call the
dock log. That log was
wet and sandy and my
son, Anthony, and I saw a
large dark thing slither
out of it that night was it
a leach?
After a how to clean
driftwood search on
Google, I poured hydro-
gen peroxide on the wood
to disinfect it.
To secure the railing, I
used rocks, cinder blocks
and 4 foot 2- by 1-inch left-
over deck wood. I used
braided ropes and leather
laces and a couple leather
belts to tie the driftwood in
place. Fisherman netting
was placed over the rocks
and blocks.
A piece of beaver
wood recently found at
an estate sale in St. Clair
Shores and a few pieces of
green exotic-looking plant
logs were added, along
with some fishing cork
and a seaweed-like spray
of silk plants.
Though the driftwood
railing is secure, I plan on
adding some synthetic sin-
ew ties for extra strength
and durability. I should al-
so learn how to tie a sailors
knot or two.
Thank you to all who
have helped to clean up
the beaches of Lake St.
Clair and even hauled the
driftwood to the road. I
hope to join the group at
next years beach cleanup,
if I have the guts.
PHOTOS BY DIANE MORELLI
This deck rail-
ing made from
driftwood is
considered a
work of art.
To the Editor:
The South Lake
Schools open letter to
the homeowners states
the schools want to have
passed a $25,585,000
bond for a duration of 35
years for maintenance,
technology updates and
to resurface the football
field.
The schools state this
will cost the owner of a
$100,000 home less than
$2 per month. This is
true for one year the
millage is 0.49 per thou-
sand.
The actual ballot lan-
guage reads the millage
is 0.49 per thousand for
one year and after the
one year, the millage
jumps to 4.01 per thou-
sand; and several years
later, the millage jumps
to 7.14 mills per thou-
sand.
Remember this is for
35 years.
South Lake then puts
this proposal on the pri-
mary election, where
very few people vote; in-
stead of the general
election, where many
more homeowners vote.
I feel South Lake
Schools could be more
forthcoming with the ac-
tual cost to homeowners
about this bond propos-
al.

8A ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION THURSDAY, JULY 24, 2014
AUTOMOTIVE
The 2015 Expedition
has a refreshed new look,
a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 en-
gine and a quieter cabin
with more technology
than previous-generation
vehicles. It will be the lat-
est Ford nameplate to of-
fer a high-end Platinum
series. The 2015
Expedition lineup also in-
cludes XLT, Limited and
King Ranch series.
Expedition, which de-
buted in 1996, is Fords
largest utility vehicle, with
seating for eight. The
s t a nda r d 2 0 1 5
Expedition, one of two
versions available, has
three rows of seats and up
to 108.3 cubic feet of car-
go space. It sits on a
119-inch wheelbase. A
longer-wheelbase version
131 inches has three
rows of seats and best-in-
class maximum cargo
space of 130.8 cubic feet.
The new Expedition
features the latest technol-
ogies, including available
SYNC with MyFord
Touch, passive entry with
push-button start and
Blind Spot Information
System with cross-traffic
alert. The new 3.5-liter
EcoBoost V6 engine, using
direct injection and twin
turbochargers, provides
more power, efficiency
and performance than the
5.4-liter V8 in the current
model.
To maximize perfor-
mance and control, the ve-
hicle will be equipped with
a six-speed SelectShift au-
tomatic transmission.
With the new power-
plant, Expedition will be
among the full-size SUV
leaders for capability, gen-
erating 365 horsepower
and 420 pound-feet of
torque. Add best-in-class
maximum cargo space for
the extended-length ver-
sion and available best-in-
class towing of up to 9,200
pounds when properly
equipped, and customers
will find a truly useful utili-
ty vehicle.
For 2015 the
Expeditions cabin is even
quieter than the current
model. A host of changes
helps minimize noise. The
exterior front end design
has a fresh, aggressive
look that features avail-
able halogen projector
headlamps and LED fog
lamps. Exterior changes
also include a wheel line-
up topped by optional, fac-
tory-installed 22-inch pol-
ished aluminum wheels
for Limited, King Ranch
and Platinum; a revised
rear hatch; and chrome-
tipped exhaust.
The 2015 Expedition
will be available at local
Ford dealerships this fall.

The new 2015 Ford
Expedition offers SYNC
with MyFord Touch and
ambient LED interior
lighting. A Brunello
leather interior, at left,
with tuxedo-stripe ac-
cents and French-seams
stitching is offered in
the new Platinum se-
ries.
Jaguar Land Rover
develops the self-learning
intelligent car of the future
Cutting-edge technology is being pioneered by re-
searchers at Jaguar Land Rover to develop an intelli-
gent self-learning vehicle offering a completely person-
alized driving experience and help prevent accidents by
reducing driver distraction.
Using the latest machine learning and artificial intelli-
gence techniques, Jaguar Land Rovers self-learning
car will offer a comprehensive array of services to the
driver, courtesy of a new learning algorithm that recog-
nizes who is in the car and learns their preferences and
driving style. The software then applies this learning by
using a range of variables including the drivers calen-
dar, time of day, traffic conditions and the weather to
predict driver behavior and take over many of the daily
driving chores, allowing the driver to concentrate on
the road ahead.
The aim of our self-learning technology is to mini-
mize driver distraction, which will help reduce the risk
of accidents, said Wolfgang Epple, director of research
and technology for Jaguar Land Rover. Presenting the
driver with information just at the right time whilst driv-
ing will reduce both cognitive distraction and the need
for the driver to look away from the road to scroll
through phone lists, or adjust mirrors, temperature or
seat functions while on the road.
Up until now, most self-learning car research has on-
ly focused on traffic or navigation prediction. We want
to take this a significant step further, and our new learn-
ing algorithm means information learned about you
will deliver a completely personalized driving experi-
ence and enhance driving pleasure.
The intelligent car will recognize the driver by the
smartphone or other device in their pocket, and by the
time the driver has opened the car door, the mirrors,
steering wheel and seat settings will be set to the indi-
viduals preferences. The cabin will be pre-set to the de-
sired temperature and be intelligent enough to
change it if it is snowing or raining.
Through the Smart Assistant, the car will also re-
view the drivers schedule for the day and intelligently
pre-set the navigation depending on traffic conditions
to avoid congestion. It will also predict the next destina-
tion based on the drivers schedule. If the driver is tak-
ing the children to school, the car will recognize every
passenger and offer each their own preferred infotain-
ment options. And the Smart Assist will review the driv-
ers calendar and send reminders to their smartphone.
If the driver usually makes a phone call at a certain
time or on a particular journey, the car will predict this
and will offer to make the call.
The self-learning car will also be able to learn an indi-
viduals driving style in a range of traffic conditions and
on different types of road. When the driver activates
Auto Adaptive Cruise Control the car will be able to ap-
ply these learned distance settings and acceleration
profiles to automated cruise control.
The personalized experience would also not be limit-
ed. If the driver rents an intelligent Jaguar or Land
Rover, the car will recognize the driver and passengers
and offer them the same preferences learned by their
vehicle at home.

OBITUARY
Faye Hilda Martin
Faye Hilda Martin, a res-
ident of Grosse Pointe
Woods for 65 years,
passed away peacefully
Sunday, June 8, 2014, at
Henry Ford Macomb
Hospital. She was 90 and
had been living at Harbor
Chase Assisted Living in
Auburn Hills.
She was born Dec. 2,
1923, in Mt. Clemens, to
Thomas and Maude
Newman and graduated in
1941 from South Lake
High School in St. Clair
Shores. She worked and
retired as a nurses aide
from the obstetrics depart-
ment of Cottage Hospital
in Grosse Pointe. She
loved working with the
young mothers and ba-
bies. Also, she was active
with the U.S. Power
Squadrons, District Nine,
along with her husband.
Mrs. Martin and her
husband traveled the
globe with a flying group
called the Nomads out of
Romulus. She often could
be found working in her
garden she loved so
much. She was proud of
her two grandchildren
and enjoyed watching
them grow up. She also
enjoyed her days spent
exercising and doing ac-
tivities at the Senior
Center in St. Clair Shores.
Her family said she com-
mented she was there to
help the old people.
Along with exercising,
she enjoyed walking with
her neighbors around the
neighborhood and the
Grosse Pointe Woods
Park. She met and greet-
ed people with a warm
smile that exuded charm
and eloquence.
Mrs. Martin was prede-
ceased by her husband,
John. She is survived by
her children, Julie Ann
Doherty (Greg) of Auburn
Hills, John Alan Martin of
Grosse Pointe Woods and
Karen Sue Martin-Adams
of Chicago; granddaugh-
ters, Rachel Faye Yearby
(Donny) of Clarkston and
Jaclyn Marie Doherty of
Chicago and siblings, Beth
Buell of Roseville, Ruth
Swingyar of Keen, Texas,
Gary Newman (Jane) of
Harrison Township and
Beverly Barton (Max) of
Keen, Texas. She also is
survived by her maid of
honor and life-long friend,
Marge Decker of
Syracuse, N.Y.
Her family said Mrs.
Martin wanted people to
remember her for how she
was. In honor of her wish-
es, there was no memorial
or service held.
