STORY

23 officers of the Nigerian Police Force serving under the African Union Mission
in Somalia (AMISOM) have completed a six day induction course as they begin
their tour of duty.

The newly deployed Individual Police Officers (IPOs) including 8 women and 15
men arrived in Mogadishu this week.

The training covered different aspects including understanding the mission
mandate, Somalia and its culture, humanitarian and international law, civil
military co-ordination and dealing with cultural diversity, among others.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the officers induction training, the AMISOM
Police Commissioner, Mr. Anand Pillay challenged the newly deployed officers to
take their role serious and pledged to give them the support they need.

Wherever you are posted, we will be monitoring and assessing your
performance. We will also be providing you with the necessary support from our
side at Police Headquarters, to ensure that you are given the necessary support
and assistance to perform your duties, he said.

The Acting Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union
Commission for Somalia Hon. Lydia Wanyoto Mutende reiterated the importance
of building the capacity of the Somali government institutions, an aspect key to
the AMISOM exit strategy.

We are here for a very specific mission; those of us that are from Africa, just to
ensure that there is peace and stability in our sister country and that we also
create reconciliation amongst our brothers and sisters. We are not here to stay;
we have an agenda which is specific, which is 2016. We should be able to go back
to our home countries and allow Somalia to be run and governed in peace by the
Somalis themselves.

The officers expressed optimism as they embark on the new assignment and are
hopeful that they will make a difference in the lives of the Somali people.

A lot of peacekeepers have worked so hard from when the mission begun in
2007 thus far, so we are coming here to see how we can drive the mission
forward, progressively towards peace, said Akin Fakorede, the Commander of
the Nigerian IPOS.

Justine Enefu, one of the participants added, We are going to mentor and advise,
more especially the women. At the same time we are going to build their capacity
to see how we reform them to be a better Somali.

The AMISOM Police component is charged with training and mentoring the
Somali Police Force to improve its professionalism and effectiveness. The
component currently draws its Individual Police Officers from Uganda, Nigeria,
Ghana and Sierra Leone.
