Instruction Manual
COMSAB II
Computerized Control System
for refrigerating compressors
Version 1.06
2 0178-444--ENG
Preface
The present instruction manual, that covers
the COMSAB II gateway, describes how to
install the unit and how to use the SABROE
protocol 0178-400.
COMSAB II gives the user access to read
and write data in the following SABROE com-
pressor control units: PROSAB II,
UNISAB S/R/RT/RTH and UNISAB II.
COMSAB II vers. 1.06 additionally gives the
user access to read and write data in the Sa-
broe Chiller Control Unit.
The COMSAB II functions as a gateway, con-
verting from the proprietary HDLC/RS485
protocol, which is used between the com-
pressor control units, to a very simple ascii/
RS232 protocol (0178-400) which is de-
scribed in this manual.
This manual refers to COMSAB software
version 1.06.

There are no jumpers or switches on COM-
SAB II which have to be set before operation.
Place the COMSAB II, the RS232 cable and
the RS485 communication cable in a dis-
tance of minimum 30 cm from contactors,
high power cables or any other unit radiating
electromagnetic noise.
Protective ground potential should best be
the same for UNISAB and COMSAB as well
as for any PCs or PLCs connected to it. A
eavy gauge wire (6 mm2) running along with
the communications tables from one protec-
tive ground to the next, may prevent a lot of
trouble. Please observe local safety regula-
tions which may not allow this.

*In order to terminate the communication,
pins 2 + 3 and pins 4 + 5 must be connected
together -- as shown.
The baud rate between COMSAB II and Dan-
buss is set up automaltically to be the same
as configured in the UNISAB/PROSAB con-
nected to the RS485 network. The setting in
UNISAB II must be 1200 and 9600 baud.
Port 2 - RS232:
The data transmission to PLC/PC is based
on the RS232C async serial standard.
No handshake signals are being used, so the
plug (J4) connections are very simple:

Pin #1: Gnd Signal ground.
Pin #2: TxD Transmitted Data.
Pin #8: RxD Received Data.
The data format is: 8 data bit, 1 stop bit and
even parity.
Note that the COMSAB II is functioning as a
DTE (Data Terminal Equipment).
The baud rate between COMSAB II and
PLC/PC is set up automatically, the baud rate
setting in the PLC/PC must be 9.600 or
19.200 baud.
Communication is initiated by the PLC/PC
issuing a number of READ messages (1-3)
until COMSAB II responds. (COMSAB II ini-
tialize at 19.200 baud at power on).
Diodes:
There are 4 diodes on COMSAB II, with the
following function:
Yellow (Idle)
-- Light when net activity on port 1 (RS485).
Green (Frame err.)
-- Light when COMSAB II has synchronized
itself to the baud rate on the net (RS485).
Red (Overfl.)
-- Light when COMSAB II is master.
Yellow = (Power)
-- Light when power is on.

Protocol:
SABROE protocol 0178-400 describes the
data communication between a central com-
puter (PLC or PC), and a COMSAB II
module.
This protocol allows any type of computer
(when above hardware is available) to re-
trieve data from a UNISAB or a PROSAB
control panel, through the COMSAB II mod-
ule. The protocol always waits to get polled
by the central computer. It never starts a
communication by it self.
The communication is based on the central
computer sending a telegram (a message) to
the COMSAB II module. The telegram should
always consist of a total of 11 (ascii) charac-
ters, that is 9 message characters plus 2
control characters STX (Start of TeXt) and
ETX (End of TeXt).
(The corresponding ASCII character is
shown in sharp parenthesis, where []
means an ASCII space)
Message format:
Stx - Code - Index - Point - Data--field - Etx
Stx Starts the telegram (1 character).
Stx = 02H [ ^B]
Code Indicates read/write telegram
(1 character).
The value should be 20H [] when
reading data.
The value should be 21H [!] when
writing data.
The value should be 22H [] when
reading COP data from UNISAB II.
Index Indicates the dialing # of the
UNISAB/PROSAB which must
receive this telegram (1 character).
The value must be 20H []
= UNISAB/PROSAB # 1.
The value must be 21H [!]
= UNISAB/PROSAB # 2.
The value must be 2EH [.]
= UNISAB/PROSAB # 14.
Point Indicates the address of the variable
which should be read or changed
(1 character).
The value must be 20H-FFH
according to the table 0178-402.
Data field
The Data field contains always
6 characters.
The Data field can contain any
integer value from --990 to + 99999.
The value must be right justified.
Not used characters must be space
filled.
The value in the Data field may be
multiplied by a factor of 10.
See Data format/Range in Read
table and/or Write table.
Etx Ends the telegram (1 character).
Etx= 03H [^C]
Reply from the COMSAB II:
When writing data by a COMSAB II, the re-
ply message is a copy of the message sent
to the COMSAB II.
Data written to UNISAB II is checked in the
UNISAB II. If the value exceeds the limits
that are built into UNISAB II (see UNISAB II
8 0178-444--ENG
instruction book for reference) then UNISAB
II accepts and returns the lowest or highest
of the built-in limits, depending on which limit
is exceeded.
Data written to UNISAB I or PROSAB II is
checked in the COMSAB II. If the value ex-
ceeds the limits that are build into COMSAB
II, then COMSAB II returns an error mes-
sage with code F____6.
For reference -- see the limits table under
note (5), placed under notes following the
table Points to Write.
When reading data by a COMSAB II, the re-
ply message is a copy of the message sent
to the COMSAB II, except from the Data field
which will be filled with the value asked for.
Depending on the data type then the value
returned may be in 1/10 of the unit asked for,
i.e. +/-- xx.x BAR, +/-- xxx.x C, xxx.x % etc,
se Data format/Range for the specific point
asked for.
Possible error messages:
This protocol gives an error message if the
communication fails. The error message is
given in the Data field:
Data field: _____ No error ( 6 spaces ).
Data field: F___3 Code does not exist.
Data field: F___4 Index does not exist.
Data field: F___5 Point does not exist.
Data field: F___6 Read/write not
possible.
Data field: F___7 UNISAB/PROSAB
does not exist.
Data field: F___8 No such control
system.
Data field: F___9 Syntax error in
message received.
If a parity error occurs, or the number of
characters received in a message by the
COMSAB II is different from 11, no reply will
be given to the central computer.
Tables:
In the table 0178-402 /Read and Write, de-
tails about selecting the correct point, details
about translating the reply for compressor
control mode etc are given.
Response time:
There is always a time delay from the mo-
ment a change in e.g. pressure on the com-
pressure unit is seen until it actually can be
read by the COMSAB II module. The worst
case time delay can approximately be calcu-
lated with this equation:
TimeDelay = 13 + ( 1,5 * N ) seconds at
1200 Baud.
TimeDelay = 7 + ( 0,8 * N ) seconds at
2400 Baud.
TimeDelay = 1 + ( 0,1 * N ) seconds at
19200 Baud.
N is the number of compressors connected
to this COMSAB II module.
Another delay occurs in the communication
between the COMSAB II and the central
computer. This delay depends on the se-
quence of communications from the central
computer to the COMSAB II. (As worst case).
At worst, this time delay must be added to
the time delay calculated above.
Examples:
In the following some message examples are
given. The message codes are shown both
as HEX values and as ASCII characters
[in sharp parenthesis].

Compressor #3 will not start. Perhaps be-
cause compressor #3 does not exist (in the
communications system), maybe the com-
pressor is not in remote control or the com-
pressor cannot start because of an alarm in
the control system.
Example 6:
Read alarms from compressor #3.
In the UNISAB II all alarms, i.e. an alarm
number, are stored in an alarm-queue, con-
taining max. 5 alarms.
The first (oldest) alarm is stored in alarm 1
(read point 52), the next alarm in alarm 2
(read point 53) and the last (newest) alarm is
stored in alarm 5 (read point 56) -- see read
table.
To read the UNISAB II alarm-queue you will
have to do the following:
Send a read message -- reading point 52.
If there isnt any alarm in the UNISAB II then
the reply will be a 0 (zero).
If there is one (or more) alarms in the
UNISAB II then the reply will be the number
of the oldest alarm, i.e. a alarm number from
31 to 76 -- see the table of alarm/warnings.
To see if there is more than one alarm in the
queue, send a read message reading point
53, then point 54, 55 and 56 until the reply
from the COMSAB II is a 0 (zero).

warning 2 (read point 58) and the last (new-
est) warning are stored in warning 5 (read
point 61) -- see read table.
The procedure for reading the warning-queue
is the same as for reading the alarm-queue,
see example 6.
To read the UNISAB II warning-queue you
will have to do the following:
Send a read message -- reading point 57.
If there isnt any warning in the UNISAB II
then the reply will be a 0 (zero).

(4): See TABLE OF ALARM/
WARNINGS.
In the UNISAB II all alarms, i.e. a
alarm number, are stored in an
alarm-queue, containing max. 5
alarms. The first (oldest) alarm are
stored in alarm1 (read point 52),
the next alarm in alarm 2 (read
point 53) and the last (newest) alarm
are stored in alarm 5
(read point 56) - see read table.
To read the UNISAB II alarm-queue
you will have to do the following:
Read point 52. If there isnt any
alarm in the UNISAB II then the
reply will be a 0 (zero). If there is
one (or more) alarms in the
UNISAB II then reply will be the
number of the oldest alarm, i.e. a
alarm number from 31 to 76 - see
the table of alarm/warnings.
Too see if there are more than one
alarm in the queue, then send a
read message reading point 53, then
point 54, 55 and 56, until the reply
from the COMSAB II is a 0 (zero).
The same procedure is used when
reading the warnings-que.

Capacity Control (communication)
It is possible directly to control the capacity of
the compressor by sending a capacity set-
point by communication.
For UNISAB II it is possible to control the ca-
pacity on both screw compressors and recip-
rocating compressors.
For PROSAB II and UNISAB S it is only pos-
sible to control the capacity on screw com-
pressors.
UNISAB II must be set to REMOTE in picture
CONTROL.
PROSAB II and UNISAB must be set to RE-
MOTE mode by using the SET button.
Screw compressors (when running) will di-
rectly follow the capacity value (0--100%)
whitch is specified in Setpoint for capacity,
point 52 (remember the setpoint is in 1/10 of
percent).
Notice, however, that the various limiting
functions may reduce the compressor capa-
city.
Reciprocating compressors will shift one ca-
pacity stage up or down, depending on
whether the value specified in Setpoint for
capacity, point 52, is above or below the
percentage value that correspondes to the
capacity stage in question.
The timers DELAY UP and DELAY DOWN
will be in function if the UNISAB II program
version is 1.08 or later.
Notice, however, that the various limiting
functions may reduce the compressor capa-
city.
When a capacity setpoint is sent to UNISAB
II, UNISAB S or PROSAB II it will enter the
capacity regulation mode, this can be seen
by the fact that the start number is set to zero
(the old start number is remembered,
UNISAB II stores the number itself and for
UNISAB S/ PROSAB II the number is stored
in PCCOMSAB II) .
UNISAB II, UNISAB S or PROSAB are taken
out of capacity regulation mode by sending a
new setpoint 1 or 2, neutral zone (NZ) or pro-
portional band (PB) value to one of the other
regulators, e.g. suction regulator, brine regu-
lator etc. When UNISAB / PROSAB II are
taken out of capacity regulation mode the old
start number is reinserted.
It is possible to take UNISAB II out of capac-
ity regulation mode by changing START NO
back to the old start number on the UNISAB
II display. In that case you must reset COM-
SAB II. This is done by making a power off/
on.
Read point 125 Cap. mode will be 1 if
UNISAB II is in capacity regulation mode,
else Cap mode will be 0.

Start:
The compressor can be started in two ways
(situation 2 is only possible for UNISAB II)
1. By sending the start command START
COMPRESSOR, point 53.
2. When the capacity setpoint sent is above
5 % and AUTO START = YES has been
configured, the timer START DELAY be-
gins to count down in case of screw com-
pressors.
For reciprocating compressors the timer
START DELAY starts once the signal is
above the lowest capacity stage, i.e.
above 25%, 33% or 50%, depending on
type.
When the timer START DELAY has
counted down, the compressor starts and
will now follow the setpoint up/down.
Stop:
The compressor can be stopped in two ways
(situation 2 is only possible for UNISAB II)
1. By sending the stop command STOP
COMPRESSOR, point 54
2. When the capacity setpoint sent is below
5 % and AUTO STOP = YES has been
configured, the timer STOP DELAY begins
to count down in case of screw compres-
sors.
For reciprocating compressors the timer
STOP DELAY starts once the signal is be-
low the lowest capacity stage, ie below
25%, 33% or 50% depending on type,
however, for reciprocating compressors
with total unloading, the timer STOP
DELAY starts counting down, once the
signal is below 0%.
When the timer STOP DELAY has
counted down, the compressor will stop.

List of Versions
Version 1.00
Error when reading motor current and hour counter from Unisab I and Prosab II. Limiting values
for external input extended.
Version 1.03
Error when reading SP1 and SP2 for brine temperature when ClimateControl has been chosen
in Unisab II and when the brine temperature is being regulated.
Version 1.04
No errors.
Must be upgraded to include COP and chiller data.
Version 1.05
We have corrected an error which made the Unisab II change start number to # 0 and at the
same time change the control mode to auto. The change was automatically carried out by Uni-
sab II, whenever the direct 4-20 mA capacity signal was connected or disconnected.
Version 1.06
The Comsab II now recognizes a Unisab II configurated as a Rotatune controller.
In earlier versions it was not possible to see any of the values in the Unisab II if the answer to
the parameter Rotatune=(YES/NO) in the Unisab II menu was YES:
Main picture > main menu > setup > config > Motor > Rotatune
In spite of this problem, the Comsab II was still able to read the values from the other Unisab II
in the system (with Rotatune=NO).
In the manual the table of alarms/warnings for Unisab II has been updated to comply with the
eprom version 2.03.1.
Also the list of multisab states has been updated to comply with the eprom version 2.03.1.
