Compound nouns explanation


We sometimes join two nouns together to express a new -cy privacy, pregnancy, accuracy, privacy
concept or idea. These two nouns may be: -ence patience, confidence, difference,
intelligence
• joined into one word:
-er teacher babysitter reader, driver, follower
bathroom / bedroom / football¡ / housewife / tracksuit /
-hood childhood, brotherhood, motherhood
weekend/workshop
-ing finding, driving, meaning, swimming,
• joined by means of a hyphen (-): heating
data-processing / horse-riding / ice-skating / tea-room
-ion instruction, situation, creation, attraction
-sion concision, discussion, tension, collision
• kept as two separate words: -tion solution, combination, intention, frustration
alarm clock / drinking water / shop window / -ition partition, demolition
swimming pool / training school / credit card / -sm racism, optimism, capitalism, impressionism
goal keeper / shopping centre / table tennis / -ity nationality, electricity, generosity, popularity
waiting room / dining room /petrol station /
-ment development, movement, government
shopping list / taxi driver / writing paper / disc jockey / -ness illness, emptiness, happiness, kindness
shop assistant / sports centre / tennis court -or actor, conductor director

Be careful! To find out which of the three possibilities is -y difficulty, honesty, delivery, burglary, harmony
the correct one you must use a good dictionary.
Some adjectives may be turned into nouns in different
ways:
Compound adjectives
These consist of two words normally separated by a

Formation of adjectives by means of suffixes Some verbs may be turned into nouns in different ways:
Adjectives can be made from nouns or verbs by adding
suffixes. You can see some examples in the following box. Verb - Noun
behave - behaviour / inhabit - inhabitant /

please - pleasure / succeed - success / choose - choice /
-able acceptable, reasonable, predictable, know – knowledge / post - postage / weigh - weight/

Nouns can be made from other nouns, adjectives or verbs il- illegal, illiteracy, illogical, illegitimate
by adding suffixes. Examples: im- impossible, immature, impractical, impatient

ir- irresponsible, irregularity, irrelevant, irrational
