THIRD SEMESTER B.E. (MECH.) DEGREE
EXAMINATION NOV/DEC. 2008

SUBJECT: MATERIAL SCIENCE & METALLURGY (MME-207)
(REVISED CREDIT SYSTEM)
01/12/08
Time: 3 Hours. MAX.MARKS: 50

Instructions to Candidates
Missing data may be suitably assumed.

1A Melting temperatures of Copper (Cu) and Silver (Ag) are 1080 degree centigrade and 960 degree
centigrade respectively. The metals Copper and Silver are mutually soluble in the liquid state and
partly soluble in the solid state. A liquid phase alloy containing 70% Silver completely transforms
into a mixture of two solid solutions at 780 degree centigrade. Maximum solubility of Ag in Cu and
Cu in Ag are 8% and 10% respectively at 780 degree centigrade. The room temp. solubility is
negligible. Assuming the curves to be linear, draw phase diagram to scale and label the regions. For
40% Ag alloy determine the following:
a) Weight percentage of eutectic formed.
b) Temperature where equal proportions of liquid and solid phases exists.
c) Weight ratio of Cu rich to Ag rich solid solutions present in the eutectic mixture.

1B Explain the theory of case hardening treatment. With heat treatment cycle briefly explain carburizing
treatment. (5+5=10 Marks)

2A With neat sketches explain the following crystal defects
a) Screw dislocation b) Line dislocation

2B Sketch neatly TTT diagram for 1080 steel and mark the phases. Also explain the uses of TTT
diagram. (5+5=10 Marks)

3A Name the binary systems in the following cases and draw the labeled ideal phase diagrams.
a) Components are completely soluble in the liquid state and insoluble in the solid states
b) Components are completely soluble in the liquid state and partly soluble in the solid states
c) Components are completely soluble in the liquid state and completely soluble in the solid
d) Components are completely soluble in the solid at higher temp. and partly soluble in the solid
at lower temp.
e) Components are partly soluble in the solid at higher temp. and completely soluble in the solid
at lower temp. ( 10 Marks)
