1 Introduction
1.1 Scope
This document describes multi-mode RRU connections and multi-mode RRU/RFU star-connections with
the BBU through GSM/UMTS common CPRI interfaces when the base station works in GSM+UMTS
mode (MRFD-210001 Multi-mode BS Common CPRI Interface(GBTS), MRFD-210002 Multi-mode BS
RRU/RFU star-connection with separate CPRI interface(GBTS), MRFD-220001 Multi-mode BS
Common CPRI Interface(NodeB), MRFD-220002 Multi-mode BS RRU/RFU star-connection with
separate CPRI interface(NodeB) ).

GSM and UMTS Common CPRI Interface 2 Technical Description

2 Technical Description
Traditional GSM and UMTS dual-mode applications require that one base station use both the RF
modules dedicated to GSM and those dedicated to UMTS. In this case, GSM data and UMTS data are
carried on different fiber optic cables on CPRI interfaces.
As multi-mode RRUs are developed, the GSM and UMTS common CPRI interface feature becomes
applicable. This feature can reduce the demand for the fiber optic cables on CPRI interfaces and
therefore, it can lower the corresponding installation and maintenance costs for the fiber optics.
The GSM and UMTS common CPRI interface feature can be implemented in the following ways:
Multi-mode RRU connections with the BBU through shared CPRI interfaces
As shown in Figure 2-1, GSM data and UMTS data can share one fiber optic cable on each CPRI
interface. The GTMU transfers the UMTS data in both the uplink and downlink directions.
Figure 2-1 Multi-mode RRU connections with the BBU through shared CPRI interfaces

When the BBU and RRUs are connected in the way shown in Figure 2-1, a relatively small quantity of fiber optic cables
are required. This connection scheme, however, is not recommended, because of the following disadvantages:
The UMTS side of the base station is dependent on the GSM side. Damages on the CPRI ports on the GTMU and faults
in the GTMU will affect UMTS services.
GSM traffic and UMTS traffic share the CPRI bandwidth.
GSM services and UMTS services interrelate. Therefore, in the case of expansion or evolution on the GSM or UMTS
side, there is an impact on the other side.
Multi-mode RRU/RFU star-connections with the BBU through separate CPRI interfaces
As shown in Figure 2-2, GSM data and UMTS data are transmitted separately on the CPRI interfaces.
In this case, the GSM side and the UMTS side can work concurrently in each RF module without
impacts on each other. In addition, this connection scheme spares more CPRI ports on the GTMU for
GSM traffic, compared with the connection scheme shown in Figure 2-1.

Figure 2-2 Multi-mode RRU/RFU star-connections with the BBU through separate CPRI interfaces

The connection scheme shown in Figure 2-2 is recommended. According to this scheme, the GSM side and the UMTS
side are independent of each other, which facilitate evolution and expansion of the services on either side.
