Hi, Andrea. This is Edward. I guess youre not at home, so I hope you receive this message. I want to invite
you to my house for a traditional Thanksgiving celebration. I know you dont celebrate it here in Chile, but I
really want you to have this typical American experience. Its not on a specific date each year. It is always in
November, because thats when the first celebration happened with the Pilgrims and the Native Americans
in the year 1621. In Chile, November is in the spring, but in my country it is in the fall, which is harvest time.
It falls on the fourth Thursday of the month, so this year it will be on the 27th. I am leaving this message on
Monday at 7 PM, so I hope you dont have other plans. I have a big turkey ready to cook, and I will prepare
my special pumpkin pie. The only thing we cant do in the American style is watch football games on TV or
go to a parade. If you want to bring some Chilean wine, Im sure it wont hurt the celebration. Call me back
and let me know if you can come!

So Linda, how do you like this eco-friendly town you are living in?
Oh! Its absolutely gorgeous! Everything is built in harmony with the environment.
Is it some kind of hippie community?
Not at all! Urbanists and architects have used non-toxic, recycled and recyclable
materials to build the houses. The idea is to save on energy, water and raw materials.
All houses are within easy walking distance of each other with carefully placed trees to
cool them in summer and shelter them from winter winds.
It sounds like pedestrian paradise!
Yeah! Its a whole new lifestyle less dependant on cars. There are bike lanes and
greenways all through the town and you can easily reach the downtown area on foot or
bike.
And... what about community services?
Well, there are farmers markets, which offer fresh organic produce and all kinds of
shops like bakeries with fresh bread every day.
Are there any buses?
Yes, there is a fleet of electric buses, which help reduce local air pollutants,
preserving farmland and the wildlife habitat.
It seems really interesting!
Absolutely! Architects and city planners are beginning to shape these visions of
sustainability, and, perhaps more importantly, beginning to change the rules of urban
design.

Using relative clauses.

Grammar focus:

Relative clauses

CLASS PRESENTATION
Relative clauses give us more information about someone or something referred to in a main clause.
They normally follow the noun phrase they refer to, and are introduced by the pronouns: when,
where, [in/on] which, who, whom, whose
Examples:
-

The car which I would like to have is far beyond my budget. (Thing)

The candidate who performs the best will get the job. (Person as subject : who is the
subject of the relative clause)

Maureen, whom I invited for dinner, refused to go out with me. (Person as object: whom is
the object of the relative clause)

1962 is the year when Chile hosted the World Soccer Championship. (Time)

The store where I worked last year went out of business after I left. (Place)

The bus on which I traveled to Punta del Este was unusually comfortable. (Place)

The man whose handgun was found near the crime scene was arrested yesterday.
(Possession)

Write the following on the board:

The woman couldnt board the plane
...who appeared to be intoxicated...
Ask your students to identify the main part of the sentence. We will refer to it as MAIN CLAUSE.
The rest of the sentence complements the main clause with further information about the subject. We will
refer to it as RELATIVE CLAUSE.
The following presentation appears in the RELATIVE CLAUSES wallchart. Encourage your students to
follow along as you go through it, or better yet, ask one (or more) student(s) to read it out.

Different uses of ...ing

There are many uses of ...ing which are quite complicated. This class will concentrate on the following
common problems:
-when to use to-infinitive or -ing after a verb
-ing following the preposition by
-ing following verbs of liking and thinking
Note: The activities of this class do not need a sequential order. You may choose any of them as the first one.
The following presentation appears in Wallchart #1 (It has been cut here for space reasons only). This will
save you time and the need to write it on the board. Encourage your students to follow along as you go through
it, or better yet, ask your students to read it out loud.
Presentation 1: to-infinitive or -ing? (WALLCHART #1 part 1)
When used in two-verb combinations, certain verbs are followed by a to-infinitive and other verbs
are followed by -ing. There are no particular rules for this, so it is necessary to become familiar with
them if we intend to use them correctly.
Examples:
to-infinitive

She hoped to get married soon.

They managed to sell the car quickly.
The manager offered to raise all salaries by 2%.

-ing

Frank detests cleaning the house.

The first gasoline-powered vehicle was built in 1885. During the last century, cars were made
increasingly more comfortable, fast and reliable. Most of them also became much less expensive, so
more and more people could afford one, new or second hand. Today, more new cars are sold in
California annually than in most countries.

Simple Past Tense

Past Perfect Progressive

CLASS PRESENTATION
The Past Perfect tense is used to describe an action that took place in the past before another past
action occurred. This tense lets us know which of these two past actions happened first.
Ex:

The meeting had already started when the boss arrived.

We have two events: the meeting that probably started at 3:00, and the boss that arrived at 3:10. The
earliest event takes the past perfect form.
* Already, yet, ever, and never are often used with the past perfect to emphasize the event which
occurred first.
Ex: I saw the Color Purple last night. I had never seen it before. Jen had already seen it.
The Past Perfect Progressive or continuous describes longer actions or situations which continued
up to the moment we refer to, or very shortly before it. The progressive emphasizes the process, not the
final result.
Ex:

We had been driving for a couple of hours when the car broke down.

* The Past Perfect and the Past Perfect progressive are usually used with by + ( a certain time ).
Ex:

By the time I got home, he had been sleeping for an hour already.
By 1998 , my baby had already been born.
