1.0 INTRODUCTION

MEANING OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE
Open-source software (OSS) is computer software with its source code made available and licensed with
a licensein which the copyright holder provides the rights to study, change and distribute the software to anyone
and for any purpose.
[1]
Open-source software is very often developed in a public, collaborative manner. Open-
source software is the most prominent example of open-source development and often compared to (technically
defined) user-generated content or (legally defined) open-content movements.
A report by the Standish Group (from 2008) states that adoption of open-source software models has resulted in
savings of about $60 billion per year to consumers.

MEANING SOFTWARE
Software is a generic term for organized collections of computer data and instructions, often broken into two
major categories: system software that provides the basic non-task-specific functions of the computer, and
application software which is used by users to accomplish specific tasks.
System software is responsible for controlling, integrating, and managing the individual hardware components
of a computer system so that other software and the users of the system see it as a functional unit without
having to be concerned with the low-level details such as transferring data from memory to disk, or rendering
text onto a display. Generally, system software consists of an operating system and some fundamental utilities
such as disk formatters, file managers, display managers, text editors, user authentication (login) and
management tools, and networking and device control software.

MEANING HARDWARE
Computer hardware refers to the physical parts of a computer and related devices. Internal hardware devices
include motherboards, hard drives, and RAM. External hardware devices include monitors, keyboards, mice,
printers, and scanners. Software runs on computer hardware, software programs often have system
requirements that list the minimum hardware required for the software to run.

2.0 The Latest Open Source Operating System (OS)
MEANING OPEN SOURCE
An operating system (OS) is a collection of software that manages computer hardware resources and provides
common services for computer programs. The operating system is an essential component of the system
software in a computer system. Application programs usually require an operating system to function.
Time-sharing operating systems schedule tasks for efficient use of the system and may also include accounting
software for cost allocation of processor time, mass storage, printing, and other resources.

Example
DreamLinux 5

DreamLinux is a distribution that is based on Debian Wheezy and using the latest desktop
version of XFCE 4.8 on a Linux 3.1 Kernel. DreamLinux has just released this latest version on January 2012 after a long absence
and we will see if it can make up for lost time.
When youve created a bootable LiveDVD of DreamLinux, you are greated
by a Mac OS X style desktop with which most of the software packages you have installed are there for you on the kicker bar by
default, or you can, still use the menu on the top left side of the screen and access the program you want from there.
Ubuntu 12.04

Ubuntu12.04 release on 5 february 2012, code-named"Precise Pangolin", the Ubuntu developers have released the latest version of
the popular Linux distribution to their users. Thesix-monthly Ubuntu release cycle is organised so that every two years, a version is
labelled asa Long Term Support release and 12.04 is the latest of these. LTS versions were historically supported for three years on
the desktop and five years on the server side, but with Precise, this has been changed to five years of support for both editions. The
character of an LTS release implies a focus on stability and polish, as it has to be supported for a long time, and with five years of
planned support for the desktop version, the Ubuntu developer community has set itself a big task to ful fill. This is reflected in the
changes that have been included in the new estversion: new features are mostly concerned with polishing the user interface and
making the underlying technologies more stable.

3.0 The Latest Open Source Application Software
Application software is all the computer software that causes a computer to perform useful tasks (compare
with computer viruses) beyond the running of the computer itself. A specific instance of such software is called
a software application, program, application or app.
The term is used to contrast such software with system software, which manages and integrates a computer's
capabilities but does not directly perform tasks that benefit the user. The system software serves the application,
which in turn serves the user.

Example ;
Python 3.4.0

Python 3.4.0 was released on March 16th, 2014. Major new features of the 3.4 series, compared to 3.3 Python
3.4 includes a range of improvements of the 3.x series, including hundreds of small improvements and bug
fixes. Among the new major new features and changes in the 3.4 release series are
PEP 428, a "pathlib" module providing object-oriented filesystem paths
PEP 435, a standardized "enum" module
PEP 436, a build enhancement that will help generate introspection information for builtins
PEP 442, improved semantics for object finalization

FIREFOX 28

Firefox 28 was released on March 18, 2014. It added support for VP9 video decoding and support for
Opus in WebM. For Android, features such as predictive lookup from the address bar, quick share
buttons and support for OpenSearch were added.
Firefox 28.0.1 was released only for Android six days later. It fixed H.264 video playback issues on
several Galaxy devices and includes a mobile-only security fix for file: URLs

Software

Adobe Photoshop CS6
Photoshop CS6, released in May 2012, added new creative design tools and provided a redesigned
interface

with a focus on enhanced performance. New features have been added to the Content-Aware tool such
as the Content-Aware Patch and Content-Aware Move.

Adobe Photoshop CS6 brought a suite of tools for video editing. Color and exposure adjustments, as well as
layers, are among a few things that are featured in this new editor. Upon completion of editing, the user is
presented with a handful of options of exporting into a few popular formats.

CS6 brings the "straighten" tool to Photoshop, where a user simply draws a line anywhere on an image, and
the canvas will reorient itself so that the line drawn becomes horizontal, and adjusts the media accordingly. This
was created with the intention that users will draw a line parallel to a plane in the image, and reorient the image
to that plane to more easily achieve certain perspectives.

CS6 allows background saving, which means that while another document is compiling and archiving itself,
it is possible to simultaneously edit an image.

CS6 also features a customizable auto-save feature, preventing
any work from being lost.

Photoshop CS6 was released on May 7, 2012.

The price for CS6 is US$699 and the extended version is
US$999. Students, however, even those who are homeschooled, can receive a significant discount on
Photoshop.

With the newest Photoshop version 13.1.2, Adobe has dropped support for Windows XP (even on native
x64 for Windows XP x64) ; thus, the last version that works on Windows XP is 13.0.1. Adobe also announced
that it will quit selling perpetual licenses to new creative suite packages, but will continue to support Photoshop
CS6 for OS compatibility and will provide bug fixes and security updates as necessary.

Adobe Photoshop CS4
CS4 features smoother panning and zooming, allowing faster image editing at a high magnification. The
interface is more simplified with its tab-based interface

making it cleaner to work with. Photoshop CS4 features
a new 3D engine allowing the conversion of gradient maps to 3D objects, adding depth to layers and text, and
getting print-quality output with the new ray-tracing rendering engine. It supports common 3D formats; the new
Adjustment and Mask Panels; Content-aware scaling (seam carving); Fluid Canvas Rotation and File display
options. The Content-aware scaling allows users to intelligently size and scale images, and the Canvas Rotation
tool makes it easier to rotate and edit images from any angle.

Adobe released Photoshop CS4 Extended, which has the features of Adobe Photoshop CS4, plus
capabilities for scientific imaging, 3D, motion graphics, accurate image analysis and high-end film and video
users. The faster 3D engine allows users to paint directly on 3D models, wrap 2D images around 3D shapes and
animate 3D objects. As the successor to Photoshop CS3, Photoshop CS4 is the first x64 edition of Photoshop on
consumer computers for Windows. The color correction tool has also been improved significantly.

CS4 and CS4 Extended were released on 15 October 2008. They were also made available through Adobes
online store and Adobe Authorized Resellers. Both CS4 and CS4 Extended are offered as either a stand-alone
application or feature of Adobe Creative Suite. The price for CS4 is US$699 and the extended version is
US$999. Both products are compatible with Intel-based Mac OS X and PowerPCs, supporting Windows
XP and Windows Vista

5.0 Pervasive Computing

The idea that technology is moving beyond the personal computer to everyday devices
with embedded technology and connectivity as computing devices become progressively smaller and more
powerful. Also called ubiquitous computing, pervasive computing is the result of computer technology
advancing at exponential speeds -- a trend toward all man-made and some natural products
having hardware and software.

Pervasive computing goes beyond the realm of personal computers: it is the idea that almost any device,
from clothing to tools to appliances to cars to homes to the human body to your coffee mug, can be imbedded
with chips to connect the device to an infinite network of other devices.

The goal of pervasive computing, which combines current network technologies with wireless
computing, voice recognition, Internet capability and artificial intelligence, is to create an environment where
the connectivity of devices is embedded in such a way that the connectivity is unobtrusive and always available.

Example
Smartphone

A smartphone, or smart phone, is a mobile phone built on a mobile operating system, with more advanced
computing capability and connectivity than a feature phone. The first smartphones combined the functions of
a personal digital assistant (PDA) with a mobile phone. Later models added the functionality of portable media
players, low-end compact digital cameras, pocket video cameras, and GPS navigation units to form one multi-
use device. Many modern smartphones also include high-resolutiontouchscreens and web browsers that display
standard web pages as well as mobile-optimized sites. High-speed data access is provided by Wi-Fi and mobile
broadband. In recent years, the rapid development of mobile app markets and of mobile commercehave been
drivers of smartphone adoption.

SMART TV

An Internet-enabled TV set with advanced functions such as being able to update its own electronic program guide (EPG),
record programs (DVR capability) and provide interactive access to the Web for movie content as well as Web surfing.A smart TV
may also be able to execute downloaded applications. For example, Samsung's Internet@TV is a feature upgrade for certain TV
and Blu-ray player models that lets viewers download and run apps.

Conclusion

Open Source can be used by anyone because it has no copyright claims, so users are free to use, change,
and improve the software and to redistribute it in modified or unmodified form. Pervasing Computing is to
make our lives easier because we can interact with with computers. Besides that, we can easily give the
computer commands and the computer will grant your wish.
