EN 1366-2
Fire resistance tests for
service installations
- Part 2: Fire dampers

General principles
The objective of the test method
described in EN 1366-2 is to assess
the ability of a fre damper to with-
stand heat and prevent the passage of
smoke and gases at high temperature.
The method is primarily intended for
tests of mechanical devices. It is not
suitable for testing fre dampers in
suspended ceilings without modifca-
tion.
The fre damper is mounted in a wall
or foor and connected to a duct
system with an exhaust fan at the op-
posite end. The duct system and the
exhaust fan make it possible to estab-
lish a pressure difference over the fre
damper and measure the leakage.
The test procedure can be divided into
four parts.
the damper is subjected to 50
opening and closing cycles
the leakage at ambient tempera-
ture is determined with a pressure
difference over the fre damper of
300 Pa or higher
the exhaust fan is set to produce
an air velocity of 0.15 m/s across
the fre damper opening. The
exhaust fan is turned off when
the set value is found
the fre test is initiated with the fre
damper fully open at the start of
the test. The exhaust fan is switch
on (with the predefned set value)
within 10 seconds of the burners
being ignited. If the fre damper
does not close within 2 minutes,
the fre damper has failed and the
test is discontinued.
Test Specimen
The size of fre damper to be tested
should be the largest possible size.
In addition the smallest possible size
must be tested if compliance with the
leakage criterion is required.

Depending on the mounting of the fre

damper in practice the test specimen
can either be:
installed within a wall or foor
opening
mounted on to the face of a wall
or foor. Uninsulated fre dampers
need only to be tested with the fre
damper positioned within the fur-
nace. Insulated fre dampers must
be tested from both sides
mounted remote from a wall or
foor, the fre damper must be
tested both from inside and outside
the furnace. Inside the furnace
the fre damper is mounted to a
1500 mm duct. Outside the furnace
the fre damper is mounted to a
500 mm duct. The duct is in both
cases considered a part of the test
specimen.
The fre damper must regardless of
the position, be installed as far as
possible, in a manner representative
of practice.
The standard supporting constructions
can be either a rigid wall, a fexible
wall or a standard foor construction.
The thickness of the supporting con-
struction depends on the type and the
test duration.
Application of instruments
Depending on the mounting of the fre
dampers thermocouples are positio-
ned as follows:
on the supporting construction 25
mm from the penetration (T
s
)
on any sealing around the penetra-
tion, 25 mm from the fre damper
on the fre damper, the insulated
duct and on the connecting duct.
Performance criteria
The following performance criteria
apply after fve minutes from the start
of the fre test.
Integrity
After the start of the fre test the

leakage through the fre damper

must not exceed 360 m
3
/(h x m
2
).
The perimeter around the fre damper
is judged according to EN 1363-1.
Insulation
The fre damper exceeds to satisfy
the insulation criteria if the tem-
perature rise on the unexposed
side exceeds 180 C on any of
the thermocouples or 140 C in
average. (The average temperature
criterion only applies for some of
the thermocouples.)
Leakage
The leakage through the fre dam-
per must not exceed 200 m
3
/(h x
m
2
) during the ambient leakage
test and the fre test.
Field of direct application of
test result
Field of direct application gives the
rules or guidelines of the extent to
which a tested fre damper may be
varied without further fre technical
evaluation or calculation.
Size of fre damper
If smoke leakage is not required, a
test result obtained for the fre dam-
per is applicable to all dampers of the
same type (including any aspect ratio)
provided that the maximum dimensi-
ons do not exceed those tested and
the components remain in the same
orientation as those tested.
If smoke leakage is required, an ad-
ditional fre damper representing the
smallest size, shall satisfy the smoke
leakage criteria when the leakage at
ambient temperature is tested.
Method of installation
A fre damper installed within structu-
ral openings is only applicable to other
fre dampers installed in the same
orientation as that tested.
A fre damper installed onto the face
of a wall or a foor is only applicable
to other fre dampers installed in the
same orientation as that tested.

A test result obtained for a fre

damper remote from a wall or foor is
applicable to fre dampers when:
mounted remote from a wall and
attached to a length of horizontal
fre resistance ductwork, when
tested with the fre damper posi-
tioned both within and outside the
furnace (two tests).
mounted remote from a foor and
attached to a length of vertical fre
resistance ductwork on the side
above the foor, when tested above
the foor.
mounted remote from a foor and
attached to a length of a vertical
fre resistance ductwork on the side
below the foor, when tested below
the foor.
Separation between fre dampers and
between fre dampers and construc-
tion elements.
A test result obtained for only one fre
damper or for two fre dampers with a
minimum clear separation of 200 mm
is applicable to a minimum separation
in practice of:

200 mm between fre dampers

installed in separate ducts
75 mm between damper and a con-
struction element (wall/foor).
Supporting constructions
A test obtained for a fre damper
mounted in or onto the face of a stan-
dard supporting construction is ap-
plicable to a supporting construction
of the same type with a fre resistance
equal to or greater than that of the
standard supporting construction used
in the test.
The test result can also apply to cellu-
lar or hollow masonry blocks or slabs
that have a fre resistance time equal
or greater than the fre resistance
required for the fre damper.
If a specifc supporting construction is
chosen, the test results obtained are
applicable only to that specifc wall,
partition or foor having a thickness
and/or density greater than that
tested.
