IDENTIFICATION OF THE PROBLEM

Introduction
Bullying is the use of force, threat or coercion to abuse, intimidate or aggressively impose
domination over others (Wikipedia). According to Dan Olweus, a Norwegian researcher, bullying occurs
when a person is exposed, repeatedly and over time to negative actions, doings of a person to injured
or caused discomfort intentionally, on the part of one or more other persons. According to the United
Nations in their 2005 article, violence like this happens where they should be most protected, that is in
their home, foster institution and school. This maltreatment in school is a frequent and serious problem
that results from the individual differences of students. This discrimination emanate from name calling,
playing offensive jokes, hiding or getting personal belongings and inflicting personal injury. Such
situation affects not only the personal and social aspects of a students life but also his academic
performance.
A survey conducted in Philippines by Philippines Education Department showed that one of
every two students experience bullying. Thats why the government enacted the Implementing Rules &
Regulation of Republic Act No. 10627 otherwise known as the Anti -Bullying Act of 2013 that shall
protect every Filipino. Bullying causes the victim undue emotional distress. This act mandated all to
adopt anti-bullying policies and establish intervention programs which include counseling, life skills
training and other activities that will enhance the psychological, emotional and the psycho-social well-
being of both the victim and the bully with the inclusion of all concerned parties such as bullies, victims,
witnesses, parents, school officials as well as other persons that may be affected by the bullying
incident, he said. Schools must also impose disciplinary measures as part of their child protection policy
against the perpetrators depending on the gravity and nature of the cases. They may also refer the
victims and bully to trained professionals outside the school such as social workers, guidance
counselors, psychologists or child protection specialists for further assessment and appropriate
intervention measures if necessary, Secretary Luistro said.

Importance of the Study
The results and conclusions of this study will be helpful to the students, faculty, parents and the
community as a whole because this will give them idea how and why bullying occur and how these can
be avoided. Recognizing that these unhappy events can happen to anyone, the outcomes of this report
will be valuable and advantageous for everyone.

N is the total population; and
e is the margin of error.
