How to write and publish paper

Background
I have been asked to review papers for: European
Journal of Anaesthesiology, Collegium Antropologicum,
Medicinski Glasnik (MG), Journal of Clinical Anesthesia,
Yonsei Medical Journal, Journal of Clinical
Rehabilitative Tissue Engineering Research (CRTER),
Anaesthesia and Intensive Therapy, Minerva
Anaesthesiologica, British Journal of Surgery, Arabian
Journal of Anaesthesia, Clinical Audit,Hepatobiliary
Pancreat Dis Int., Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica
I review 10-15 papers per year
Why do you want to write a paper?
To present your study results/experience
RCT
Observational studies
Case series
Case reports
Career progression
Vanity, competitiveness
Main principle
Be honest
Do not add, multiply
Do not try to hide anything
Make it look simple
Write a story
Be humble
Process
Try to lay out your idea logically and clearly
State the aim
Results
Conclusions
BACKGROUND: The problem briefly, one or two
key references
METHODS: How the study was done
RESULTS: The most important
DISCUSSION: Consider alternative hypothesis,
Consider source of error, loss of validity
CONCLUSIONS: What the authors conclude from
the results. Nothing should be vague,
inconclusive, or hypothetical
Abstract
Simple
Consider the most people will read the
abstract only
Make sure that it is the best you can do
Where to submit ?
Impact factor
Number of readers
Language
Foreign language publication
First version on your mother tongue
Avoid cut and paste
Make it simple
Use language editing
Check content before submission
When submitting
Careful selection of the journal
Ethic committee approval
Follow instructions
It is time consuming
Be respectful
Accept assessors criticism and modify your
text
Guidelines for reviewers
The Manuscript is privileged document
The reviewer should be fair and impartial
The review should be done between 2 and 3
weeks
The reviewer should not discuss the paper
with the author
The review should not contain any specific
statement on publication
The reviewer should consider the applicability,
originality, appropriateness and adequacy of
the work
The reviewer should never be abrasive
Careful documentation is very helpful
No reviewer should expect the editor to follow
his every recommendation
Early start is better but
It is never too late to start writing
