Engage: Ss talk about traditional cuisine in their country.
What foods are important in your country? Why?
What are the traditional dishes from your country?
How often do people eat these traditional dishes?
What are the ingredients of these dishes?
Do you prefer food from your own country or from another? Why?
Reading: Students then read the following text and answer the questions about it:

Lasagna comes from Italy. It is made of pasta, meat, tomato sauce and cheese. Sometimes,
people add eggplant. Omelette is popular in the UK. You can mix ham, onions, leeks and
asparagus into the egg to make a delicious omelette. Sweet and sour pork is from China. In
this dish, there are small pieces of pork, mixed with sugar, onion, garlic, pineapple and soy
sauce. The sauce tastes very sweet. Curry comes from India and Thailand. You can use
different meats and vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower.

T then writes: The Worlds Best Dish on the board and in groups students must write a list
of 10 dishes that they think are the most popular dishes in the world. T takes feedback and
writes a list on the board.

Activate: In groups, ss imagine that they are going to open a restaurant that serves traditional
cuisine from a particular country. They are going to research all the information that is
needed for them to open their restaurant and then theyre going to give a presentation about
their restaurants describing:

1) How it looks
2) What is on the menu + ingredients
3) What kind of restaurant it is and how expensive it is
4) Who the perfect customers are, e.g. a family restaurant for children or a 5 Star
restaurant for the rich
5) What the name is
6) What the speciality (special dish) of the place is and a short list of its ingredients and
recipe
7) Where the restaurant is and how big it is (e.g. how many people it seats)

Ss then interview others and ask them questions related to their restaurants and the food that
they offers.

Filler What comes to your mind when you hear the word British cuisine?
Then, students surf the Internet looking for information about/recipes of the following dishes:
BLACK PUDDING, SHEPERDS PIE, IRISH STEW, HAGGIS, SCAMPI, FISH&CHIPS,
ROAST BEEF, YORKSHIRE PUDDING, APPLE PIE, BANANA SPLIT, MINCE PIE,
CHICKEN KIEV, FRIED MARS BARS.
Having found the recipes students are to put all the ingredients into certain categories.
WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON INGREDIENTS?
MEAT, VEGETABLES, FRUIT SPICES/HERBS, OTHERS
Students work on it first in pairs or small groups, then within the whole group on a
blackboard.
Having done that group is ready to discuss the following questions.
