for its Exhibition and Residency program. Regional, na-
tional and international artists from any discipline are
welcome to submit proposals for a solo or group exhib-
ition and/or residency. Oxygen Art Centre is particularly
interested in work with regional relevance, cross-disci-
pline work and work that engages audiences in partici-
patory processes. Professional (CARFAC) exhibition and

Rarin to go to Riondel!!
For nearly forty years, there has been a baseball tourna-
ment in Riondel for the August long weekend. Over the
years the event has become more of a family festival. Tis
year through August 2 -3, there will be a Slow Pitch Tour-
nament, Pancake Breakfast, Art Show, Book Sale, and
Concession. On the Saturday you can enjoy a Stand Still
Parade ( the foats stay still and the spectators move past),
a Chair Decorating Contest and Bingo. Te perennial fa-
vourite, the Cake Walk, and the Ice Cream Social will be
on Sunday. Its a bit of summer fun for the whole family.

Centre 20th Anniversary!
Te Centre is thrilled to be hosting a free community
event which aims to thank the organizations and individ-
uals who have supported the NIMC over the past 20 years.
We are honoured to welcome the Consul General of Japan
Mr. Seiji Okura as a special guest, as well as a wonderful
line-up of presenters, activities, and demonstrations in ap-
preciation of Japanese culture and the Nikkei legacy.
Te Nikkei Internment Memorial Centre in New Denver is
a National Historic Site dedicated to preserving and sharing
the history of the internment of over 22,000 Japanese Can-
adians during the Second World War. Located on the site of a
former internment camp, the original buildings, period arti-
facts, interpretive displays, and Heiwa Teien garden chron-
icle this extraordinary episode in Canadian history.
Te Nikkei Internment Memorial Centre 20th Anni-
versary Fundraiser Dinner & Silent Auction will be held
Saturday, August 9, at 7 pm at Te Bosun Hall, New Den-
ver; tickets are $60. Enjoy a Japanese and West Kootenay
inspired bufet dinner followed by presenters, a silent auc-
tion, and live evening entertainment. Come support the
NIMC and join us for dinner West Kootenay style!
All of the proceeds from this fundraising event will as-
sist with the ongoing preservation of this National Historic
Site and will ensure the public continues have access to this

Watershed Stewardship Workshop
To learn how watersheds connect us, to share stories and
to explore how we can better protect our waterways, the
public is invited to a Watershed Stewardship Workshop on

elder of the Okanagan Nation who will discuss the trad-
itional importance of water to Indigenous peoples. Nadine
Podmorof of the Duhamel Watershed Society will discuss
the longterm efects of logging on watersheds. Juno award
winner, songwriter and performer Tony Quarrington will
lead the singing.
Te workshop is presented by KAIROS, an ecumenical
organization working for peace, human rights, and eco-
logical justice in Canada and throughout the world. Cost

to community, growing organic garlic,
squash, potatoes and home-raised tur-
keys. Corky has lived a mosaic life. As a
Vietnam war-resister he came to Canada
from California in 1969 and has worked
many diferent jobs from longshore-
man, highways surveyor, tree planter,
to running logging operations in the
Slocan Valley, before becoming an MLA
in 1991. He is known for many things,
but two important ones include the de-
velopment of the Slocan Valley Forest
Management Project and his dynamic
storytelling. Te Forest Management
Project aims to control logging and to
protect watersheds in the valley. His
storytelling engages all aspects of land
activism and social commentary.
Sean Holman, founding editor of the
pioneering online investigative political
news service Public Eye, called Corky
Evans a maverick legislator. From his
retirement speech, Corky encouraged
his colleagues to refuse to say words
that are not your own. You are not an
actor; an election is not a screen test.
You wouldnt let anybody else put you in
a box, so dont do it to yourself. Corky
Evans lives by his words. Te Langham
invites the public to his talk, Out of the
Box, one that is sure to be engaging, in-
teresting and entertaining!
Te speaker series is a part of the Lang-
ham Cultural Societys 40th Anniversary
celebrations, celebrating local folks who
have something interesting to say. Up-
coming talks include a panel discussion
on sustainability in the arts in rural com-
munities on Tursday, September 25, and
Day of the Dead in Mexico on Tursday,
October 30. Te last talk of the series will
take place on Tursday, November 27
with a presentation by John Pollack (In-
stitute of Nautical Archaeology, and the
Royal Geographic Society)

Kaslo GuitarFest 2014
Tree public concerts will be held at St.
Andrews United Church in Kaslo as part
of Kaslo GuitarFest 2014. Wednesday,
August 13 at 7 pm, a showcase concert
will feature a variety of classical guitar
music performed by professional level
students assisted by our clinicians. Fri-
day, August 15 at 7 pm Daniel Bolshoy
and Marc Teicholz share the stage as
soloists and in duets. On Saturday, Au-
gust 16 at 2 pm there will be a Gala Con-
cert involving all the students as a dem-
onstration of what theyve accomplished
during the week.

Creating A Mindstorm
Tis Summer
Kids with a love of science have the opportunity to take
part in Lego Mindstorm Robotics workshops this sum-
mer at two locations in the West Kootenay.
Anne Lavergne has been teaching computing science
and sofware development at institutions in the Lower
Mainland for more than a decade. Prior to teaching she
was employed as a sofware developer and IT manager
overseas. Recently arriving to live in the Kootenays,
Lavergne is taking her love of science, technology and
problem solving to the younger generation with camps in
Kaslo and Nakusp.
In the workshops, young people aged 12 to 18 will con-
struct a standard robot using the Lego Mindstorms Ro-
bots kit. Participants will then explore how to program
the robot using the Lego Mindstorms programming en-
vironment. At the end of the workshop, the students will
have gained skills in problem solving and sofware pro-
gramming.
Lavergne will take the workshop to the Selkirk College
Learning Centre in Kaslo August 5 to 8, between 1 pm
and 3:30 pm. And then to the Selkirk College Learning
Centre in Nakusp between August 11 and 13 from 1 pm
to 4 pm.
Te cost of the workshops is $99 for the Kaslo session
and $119 for the Nakusp session.

Nelson Food Cupboards
Harvest Rescue Program
Looking for extra fruit and vegetables for you and your
family while helping those in need? Look no further! Te
Nelson Food Cupboards Harvest Rescue Program is in
full swing.
Harvest Rescue is a program organized by the Nelson
Food Cupboard where trained volunteer pickers will
come to your yard and harvest fruits, veggies and any
other edible goodies to share with those in need! One
third of the harvest goes to the donor, one third goes to
the volunteer picking the fruit and one third to the Nelson
Food Cupboard. Te food cupboard will then distribute it
to its members and to other social service organizations.
Tis year we have nine bountiful gardens that have been
generously donated for us to grow food! Look for Nelson
Food Cupboard garden signs in and around town. Last
year we had an excellent harvest with 7990 lbs of fruit
gleaned by volunteers and 2556 lbs of fruit and vegetables
donated from markets and fruit stands.

In its eighth year, the pro-
gram is now seeking and re-
minding fruit tree donors to
give us a call! Not enough
time to pick your fruit tree
this summer? Volunteers will pick it, split it and sort it.
Call and register your tree in advance to avoid food waste!
Tis will ensure that volunteers are available and will help
to keep both bears and humans safe. Fresh surplus pro-
duce of any kind can also be dropped of at the Nelson
Food Cupboard on Mondays and Wednesdays between 9
am and 1 pm.
Join us and become a volunteer to learn the advantages
of sourcing food locally and meeting like-minded folks.
Pick with your family and take home a portion of the
harvest. Everybody benefts! Join us in linking food with
community!
