Paceman delivers an alternative touch
YOU don’t need to get comfort-
able for this; the changes won’t
take long to outline. Slightly
different light clusters, lighter
alloy wheels, a slight hike in
power for this petrol Cooper
S model and a few changes to
the interior are just about all
that’s new.
That said, as a concept the
Paceman isn’t exactly old-hat
yet. A two-door crossover with
a raked, coupe roof line and
a modest boot? It’s a niche to
top all niches… except for the
Marmite BMW X6.

Huracán is a rip-roaring bit of Italian kit
THIS is the super-fast, ultra-
exciting Gallardo’s even faster
and more exciting replacement,
so everything from the engine
internals to the processes used
to manufacture the wheels is dif-
ferent – and better.
At its heart is a more power-
ful V10 engine with 602bhp, and
that’s rather a lot.
Under the skin, a complex new
carbon and aluminium ‘hybrid’
chassis helps keep weight down
as well as strength up.
It’s a serious performance ma-
chine with all the muscle you’d
ever want. Feed it spinach and
you’d probably see its biceps in-
flate.
Looks and image
NORMALLY a Lamborghini is
just an exercise in appealing to
grown men’s inner 10-year-old,
but there’s more to this junior
Lambo than a paint shade Jaffa
would be proud of. The more
you look at it the clearer you see
both the wow factor and the re-
served balance.
As for the image, nothing but
a Lamborghini fires jaws floor-
ward in such spectacularly fash-
ion. Imagine it scything through

THERE’S space for four adults
to stretch out, and you get a re-
ally big boot, too. Actually, those
were lies. You get just the two
seats, albeit with a decent range

ing how good the Huracán is to
drive. Sadly, this bundle of won-
derment doesn’t come cheap. It’s
a bargain next to Lamborghini’s
own Aventador, but if your
planned budget extends to posh
Golfs you’d better forget about
it. It offers a lot of raw excite-
ment and adrenaline for your
dosh, but you can also comfort-
ably do the daily driving thing
if you’re just awesome like that.
Who would buy one?
This will be right up the street
of a well-off car nut who’s more
interested in sheer fun than per-
formance stats.

Changes to speed limits for HGVs

should please frustrated drivers
THERE’S good news for car
drivers this week as the gov-
ernment has officially in-
creased the single-carriage-
way speed limit for heavy
goods vehicles to 50mph.
Previously, HGVs were lim-
ited to 40mph by law, leaving
drivers’ tempers to boil over
in their cars while stuck in a
long line of traffic.
AA president Edmund
King said: “This seems like
a common sense move. Every

In the past 10 years, the av-
erage British motorist has
owned four mobile phones
and four cars.
A study by Privilege shows
that most drivers own an av-
erage of seven cars in their
driving career, even though
that figure includes four cars
in the past decade.
Older drivers are more
likely to save up and buy a
car outright with cash, while
younger drivers in their 20s
are more likely to rely on pa-
rental help to buy their first
car. The research shows 23
per cent of drivers in the 20s
were gifted their first car by
their parents compared to 11
per cent of drivers aged 50
and above.
However, the study also
found that two thirds of
drivers put money aside and
save towards their next car
compared to 12 per cent who
say they will rely wholly on
credit to fund a new car.
Charlotte Fielding, head of
car insurance at Privilege,
commented: “People change
their mobile phones fre-
quently to ensure they have
the latest brands, the most up
to date designs and technol-
ogy.
“It’s no different with cars.
“With technology forming
an integral part of a vehicle’s
function and design, consum-
ers not only want cutting
edge mobile phones, but tech-
nologically advanced driving
experiences as well.”

overtaking manoeuvres. So
we welcome the plans to al-
low trucks to legally travel at
50mph on these roads to end
this frustrating, dangerous,

The government is also
consulting on increasing the
speed limit for lorries on dual
carriageways from 50mph to
60mph.
Mr King said an AA/Popu-
lus survey showed that 81 per
cent of drivers did not know
the legal national speed limit
for lorries on single carriage-
way main roads.
He went on: “So it is no won-
der other drivers get frus-
trated, perhaps thinking the
lorry driver was just being
awkward, lost or was trying
to save fuel.
“We do appreciate that
some have concerns about
letting lorries travel faster
but a more realistic limit
should lead to better compli-
ance by all.”
Mr King said the AA would
study the dual carriageway
lorry proposal. “Lorries
today are much safer than
they were many decades ago
and so it should be feasible
for them to travel faster to
smooth traffic flow and re-
duce tailgating and crashes.”

Sri Lankan team sparked a
police response after they
were spotted cycling down
the M74. British triathlete
Jonny Brownlee was among
those amazed to see the cy-
clists riding alongside traf-
fic this morning. He posted
a picture of them on Twitter
with the message: “Just seen

DRIVERS have stopped on
motorway hard shoulders for
all sorts of barely believable
reasons, according to a list
from the Highways Agency.
Some of the dumb and dumb-
er reasons include picking
flowers, renewing insurance
policies and even trying to
sell their car.
One motorist pulled over

he was listening to.
The agency’s list of bizarre

Turbocharged Nissan GT-R races

past peers with ease and grace
NISSAN has split the GT-R
range into two very different
avenues, the hard-as-nails Nis-
mo version to satisfy track day
addicts, and this, the newly
softened standard car.
The idea is that by softening
the suspension, this model
will be more GT than R, but
with four times the power of
an average family hatchback
it’s hardly a pussy cat.
Alterations have trans-
formed the car into nothing
short of the most devastat-
ingly effective real-world GT-R
ever.
Thanks to some remarkable
aerodynamics work the GT-R
actually cuts through the air
like a swallow. Its image, is as
potent as ever. The GT-R’s leg-
endary brutality commands
awe from everyone who sets
eyes on it, and the new Vermil-
lion Red paint job hardly does
it any harm.
The boot opens like a laun-
dry basket and there’s actually
quite a lot of space for luggage,
but since the rear seats are all
but useless it’s not like the
GT-R will need to excel at car-
rying pushchairs.
Inside the lushly-appointed
cabin, figure-hugging sports
seats are swathed in high-
quality materials including
optional full leather.
Cruising along a French mo-
torway at silly speeds, the new
ride quality is a complete rev-
elation. Where the 2013 GT-R
was skittish and edgy at speed
the new model is astonishing-
ly stable, and on these relative-
ly well-surfaced highways the
comfort levels in the suspen-
sion’s softest mode are almost
at Bentley levels.
But this is still a GT-R and
transforms from ‘cruise’ to
‘missile’ in the flick of a cou-
ple of aircraft-style toggle
switches. The engine becomes
ferociously responsive and the
slight turbo lag explodes into
a monumental surge of tur-
bocharged acceleration that
leaves most other cars, like
an aggressively-driven super-
charged Range Rover Sport
that fancied its chances, trail-
ing into the distance.
Corner exit grip from the
high-tech four-wheel drive sys-
tem is incredible too, finding
untold levels of traction from
the ice-cold hairpins around
the ski resort of Val Thorens.
But within the formidable
levels of grip the new GT-R
can be adjusted and balanced
through corners just by using
the throttle, giving it a level of
confidence-inspiring mallea-
bility that owners have simply
never enjoyed before.
At less than £78,000 the GT-R
is hardly priced in everyday
family car territory, but for
the sheer capability on offer
against rivals costing almost
twice the price, the big Nissan
is more of a bargain than any-
thing you’ll find on Price Drop
TV. It’s now an involving, rau-
cous and intoxicating driving
experience, which boosts its
appeal sky-high and increases
its perceived value for money.
If you can afford it, start
writing a cheque.
The GT-R has charms that
not even its arch-nemesis the
Porsche 911 Turbo has, and all
financial considerations aside
this model makes a stellar case
for itself. Prepare to want one.
