THE TOWER: PLOT
The story takes place in Italy, around the year 1300 Il !ignore, an eccentric "an who thinks the whole
world re#ol#es around hi", is the ruler o$ Pisa, a s"all town by the ri#er %rno
&rancesca, Il !ignore's assistant, in#ites e#eryone in Pisa to the inaugural cere"ony o$ the newly built
(ain !)uare statue The statue was sculpted by *io#anni, a passionate local artist, who works under
the orders o$ Il !ignore
+ust be$ore the cere"ony begins, %llegra arri#es in Pisa !he is a young pastry che$ who, a$ter
$inishing her studies in Paris, decides to reopen her grand"other's restaurant: The *olden ,gg
%$ter deli#ering a grandilo)uent speech, Il !ignore gi#es the order and the statue is re#ealed %llegra
can't hide her surprise and bursts into laughter when she sees that Il !ignore has built a statue o$ no
other but hi"sel$
Il !ignore is insulted by %llegra's reaction &or the $irst ti"e, so"ebody is )uestioning his decisions,
and that is so"ething he won't tolerate &urther"ore, %llegra is in Pisa to stay Il !ignore knows that
her presence in town represents a threat to his hidden plans, so he starts plotting against her
*io#anni was proud o$ his statue, but now $eels sad because he thinks %llegra was laughing at his
creation %lthough she tries to e-plain her reasoning, it is di$$icult $or hi" to understand .e had li#ed
all his li$e in Pisa under the rule o$ Il !ignore, and ne#er )uestioned his "oti#es
In order to regain control o$ the situation, Il !ignore shocks the town with a new announce"ent: he
will build the highest tower in the world
*io#anni is ordered to begin the construction i""ediately, and he is #ery e-cited with the challenge
/ut %llegra knows Il !ignore can't be trusted, and she is deter"ined to pro#e it
Il !ignore resorts to his shadiest sche"e and, with &rancesca, the plan to throw %llegra out o$ Pisa
takes shape /ut *io#anni and %llegra ha#e now beco"e close, and although *io#anni is hesitant to
belie#e what lies beneath, he helps her in her )uest
