As another academic year unfolds, its time to start afresh with renewed
energy and vigour. The timepiece of life never stops, nor it pauses nor
slows down. Time ticks a regular rhythm bringing new moments, new days
and new seasons. We need to take new steps to create new opportunities
and face new challenges.
Nobody can go back and make a new beginning but anybody can
start now and make a new ending.
A message .......
Once upon a time, a very strong woodcutter asked for a job with a timber
merchant and he got it. The pay was really good and so was the work
condition. For those reasons, the woodcutter was determined to do his
best.
His boss gave him an axe and showed him the area where he was
supposed to work.
The frst day, the woodcutter brought 18 trees.
Congratulations, the boss said. Go on that way!
Very motivated by the boss words, the woodcutter tried harder the next
day, but he could only bring 15 trees. The third day he tried even harder,
but he could only bring 10 trees. Day after day he was bringing less and
less trees.
I must be losing my strength, the woodcutter thought. He went to the
boss and apologized, saying that he could not understand what was going
on.
When was the last time you sharpened your axe? the boss asked.
Sharpen? I had no time to sharpen my axe. I have been very busy trying
to cut trees
Refection:
Our lives are like that. We sometimes get so busy that we dont take time
to sharpen the axe.
So take time to relax, to think and meditate, to learn and grow. If we dont
take the time to sharpen the axe, we will become dull and lose our
effectiveness.
It's all about "working smart and not only working hard".

About us:
S.N.M. Polytechnic is a co-educational technical institution founded in
Moodbidri in the year 1984. This Polytechnic has been imparting affordable
Technical Education with great responsibility to the rural youth over the
past 30 years. The striving for excellence continues. This Polytechnic is
jointly managed by The Academy of General Education, Manipal & SMC
Trust Moodbidri Padmabhushan Dr. Ramdas M. Pai, Chancellor of Manipal
University is at the helm of affairs of this institutuon in the capacity of
Registrar, Academy of General Education, Manipal and President of SMC
Trust.
This Polytechnic is approved by All India Council for Technical
Education, New Delhi & affliated to Directorate of Technical Education
(DTE) Bangalore. The Polytechnic is situated a kilometer from Moodbidri
town on the Moodbidri Dharmasthala Higway on a sprawling campus of 23
acres. Presently offers Diploma in seven different branches of engineering
with an intake of 390 students. This Polytechnic is named after a visionary
and the philanthropist of this region Late S N Mudbidri.
Aims & objectives:
This Polytechnic aims at providing the students with a conducive
environment for learning so that they build themselves up. In keeping up
with the vision of our founder and our management, our institution would
like to join hands with the parent community to prepare the students to
achieve academic excellence and impart values to face the challenges
that lay ahead.

OUR SOURCE OF INSPIRATION ........
Late Sanjeeva Narayana Mudbidri
It is a matter of great pride to profle Sri. S.N. Mudbidri after whom
our Polytechnic is named. By profession, he was an industrialist and
businessman engaged in the manufacture and distribution of automobile
parts. He had a long and impressive record of social service for more than
four decades. His pursuits were many and varied. They included rural
uplift, adult literacy, widow re-marriage, education, medical services and
other.
The great man that S.N. Mudbidri was, he still had a very modest
beginning. When he landed in Mumbai he took up the job as a typist with
an auto parts dealer and eventually took to salesmanship. Gradually he
became a prosperous businessman dealing in the manufacture and sale
of auto spares.
After having attained success in his profession, and even before
Sri Mudbidri evinced keen interest in social service. He was largely
instrumental in the birth of Samaj Mandira, the community hall, which has
been a centre of social and cultural activities.
In the feld of education also, Sri Mudbidris contributions were
singular. He played a key role in the establishment of Mahaveera
Vidyavardhaka Sangha which joined hands with the Academy of General
Education, Manipal, in the establishment of Sri Mahaveera College in
1964. Under his stewardship, educational institutions were set up in
Moodbidri, Kallamundkur, Mulki and Puttur.
Another unforgettable contribution of Sri S.N. Mudbidri was the
establishment of G.V. Pai Memorial Hospital in Moodbidri. This Hospital,
set up in 1974, is now well staffed and equipped.
Sri. S.N. Mudbidri was a Gandhian to the core. He was an
embodiment of simplicity in personal life. He was pragmatic and endowed
with an obsession to serve his fellowmen and share with them whatever
he possessed.
How fortunate is our institution to be named after this great soul !!!

Padmabhushan Dr. Ramdas M. Pai has succeeded
late Sri. K.K. Pai as the Registrar of Academy of General
Education, Manipal. He is also the President of SMC
Trust.
Dr. Ramdas M. Pai, son of late Dr. Madhava Pai, has
been an international fgure. He is a medical graduate
of Karnataka University and a post graduate in Hospital
Administration from Temple University, Philadelphia,
U.S.A. He began his illustrious career as Hospital Administrator of Kasturba
Hospital, Manipal. For a long time he served as the Medical Director of
Kasturba Hospital, Manipal. For a long time he served as the Medical
Director of Kasturba Hospital. At present he is the Chancellor of Manipal
University. He is presiding over the destiny of Manipal Group which is the
nucleus of 53 educational institutions which have an enrollment of 32000
students in India.
Dr. Ramdas Pai has been a strong advocate of Public - Private
Partnership in higher education and health care. He is largely instrumental
in creating education and healthcare institutions not only in different parts
of India but even abroad. He has been the Pro-chancellor of the Sikkim -
Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences, Gangtok,
Sikkim.
Dr. Ramdas Pai has held important and coveted responsibilities and
posts which include the following:
q Executive Committee Member of the Medical Council o India.
q Member of the Dental Council of India.
q Member of U.P. State Development Council.
q Member of the Education Council set up by the Confederation of Indian
Industry.
q Panel Member of the British Council sponsored UK - India Education
and research Initiative 2008.
In addition Dr. Pai has been associated with innumerable and diverse
organisations, associations and institutions in different capacities.

Dr. Pai has been a recipient of a number of awards and honors in
appreciation and recognition of his services. The prestigious awards
conferred on him include the following:
q Conferred the Padmabhushan award by Government of India.
q Dr. B.C. Roy National Award for Community Health Work.
q Honorary Fellowship of the faculty of General Dental practitioner of the
Royal College of Surgeons of England.
q Ernst and Young Entrepreneur Award of the year 2004.
q Government of Karnataka Suvarna Karnataka Year Award 2006.
q award by World Konkani Convention in 1995.
Dr. Ramdas Pai has been known for his vision and creative, inspirational
and dynamic leadership. He has a fair for making quick decisions. His
achievements have been spectacular. He is undoubtedly and deservingly
the most suitable successor to his illustrious father, late Dr. T.M.A. Pai.

I General Rules :
1. Students are required to report to the classes well in time.
Regular classes are held between 9 AM to 1 PM and from
2 PM to 5 PM. On some days the classes get extended up
to 6 PM. On Saturdays classes are conducted up to 1 PM
only. The parents are required to know the exact timings of
the classes of their ward from the Time-Table provided on the
last page of this calendar. Parents are expected to keep a
check on these timings to help their ward in managing their time well.
2. Students are required to maintain good conduct & discipline in the
classroom and in the campus
3. It is mandatory for students to carry their college calendar & identity
card everyday. They should produce the same whenever the college
authority demands.
4. All the students need to create their e-mail ID compulsorily and provide
it to the offce. Students are required to go through their e-mails
regularly.
5. The college strictly prohibits the use of mobile phones within the
college campus. Mobile phones will be seized if found. Severe
penalty will be imposed for possessing mobile phones.
6. Parents can communicate with their ward through the college
telephone or academic advisor or any of their department teachers
in case of my emergency (Telephone numbers provided on page
number 23 to 29).
7. Letters addressed to the students are subject to scrutiny by the
Principal.
8. It is the moral responsibility of the students to judiciously use the
college property. Deliberate damage to the college property attracts
appropriate fnes.
9. Collection of funds in the college are not allowed without the
permission of the Principal.
10. Students are strictly prohibited from taking part in any kind of agitation
against the College & Government.

11. Students are al l owed to be cal l ed outsi de the cl ass onl y
with proper intimation from the college offce through the Lecturer.
12. Students are not allowed to conduct any party in the college without
the approval of the Principal. They are forbidden to bring crackers,
explosives or any electronic gadgets which does not concern with the
curriculum.
13. Uni forms are to be compul sori l y worn by the students on
the specified days of the week, failing which penalty will be
levied. The college does not encourage the use of ornaments
& advocates decent dressing whenever uniform is not compulsory.
14. Uniforms are to be worn during examinations compulsorily.
15. Caferatia is made available for students and staff in the college.
Lunch and snacks are provided at nominal cost. Cafeteria committee
comprising of staff and students representatives meet frequently
to monitor the functioning of cafeteria. Students are advised
not to go out the campus during working hours. Problems if any,
pertaining to cafeteria may be represented through the student / staff
representatives.
16. An anti ragging committee functions in the campus. As ragging is a
criminal offence, students are warned not to indulge in any such kind
of ragging activities. If such cases are reported severe action will be
taken on those accused.
17. Students shall follow all the rules & regulations set by the college
from time to time. The Principal has powers to suspend & dismiss
any student from the institution on disciplinary matters.
18. Protection to women is emphasized in the Campus. Cases of sexual
harassment, sexual assault, sexual abuse, eve teasing etc. will be
considered very seriously. Victims of sexual abuse are requested
to report such cases to any of the sexual harassment committee
members or the Principal directly.
19. Tobacco products are strictly prohibited in the College Campus.
Possession of tobacco products, drugs of any kind, chemicals such
as whitener, gums, syrups will be reported to the police immediately.
II. In the Classroom
1. Teacher has all powers to conduct the class smoothly in accordance
with the rules and regulations of the polytechnic.
2. No student shall enter or leave the class room during the class hours
without the permission of the teacher.

3. Chewing gums during class hours, obscenity in word or deed,
misbehaviour are regarded as indiscipline attracting appropriate
punishment.
4. Students coming late to classes will not be given attendance.
5. A caution deposit Rs. 2,000/- should be paid by every student towards
the drawing boards and library which will be refunded after their
completion of the course.
III. Attendance and leave
1. Punctuality and regularity in attending classes is compulsory.
2. Absence of any kind should be brought to the notice of the concerned
academic advisor before attending the next class.
3. Record of leave shall be signed by the parents / guardian
/ Hostel warden and should be countersigned by concerned academic
advisors. Students are required to use this calendar for maintaining
record of their absence. Every student must possess the calendar
at all times of the academic year.
4. If the calendar is lost, students may get another calendar issued from
the offce by paying a penalty of Rs. 50/-
5. Absence due to sports and games / cultural activities or any other
co-curricular activities should be acknowledge by In-charge of Sports
of Students Welfare Offcer.
6. Parents may contact the academic advisors for any clarifcation
regarding their ward. Detailed class wise list of academic advisors
with their mobile number are printed on page number 29 for reference.
7. Attendance will be calculated from the date of admission. 75% of
attendance is the minimum requirement to be eligible to appear for
semester examinations. Shortage of attendance will be intimated to
the students and parents form time to time through the progress cards.
8. Students with attendance below 75% in any subject will not be
eligible to appear for semester examinations.
IV. College Examination
1. Three Internal Assessment (I.A.) examinations are conducted
compulsorily every semester as per the schedule mentioned in the
calendar. The dates of tests will remain unchanged unless under
unforeseen circumstances. The students are required to prepare
well in advance for the exams to achieve academic excellence.

2. The students should produce the Identity Card during examination.
3. Internal assessments are as follows:
a. Three tests are conducted in each theory subject & Drawing /
Drafting & two tests in practical subjects.
b. Marks will be awarded for attendance as per the BTE norms.
c. Internal assessment in theory subjects are awarded considering
the marks obtained in internal assessment exams. So students
are required to compulsorily attend all the three examinations for
better performance.
d. The internal assessment marks in practical subjects will be
awarded considering the overall performance of the students in
the Laboratories, observations, submission of records, neatness,
attendance etc.
4. The Polytechnic supplies blue books for tests with nominal charges.
5. The students should bring the Drawing sheets and Graph sheets for
the Sessional Exams.
6. Students are required to report at least 10 minutes before the
commencement of the exam.
7. The students cannot leave the exam hall 30 minutes from the
commencement of Internal Assessment Exam.
V. Progress Cards
1. The college maintains Progress Card of each student. The updation
and distribution of progress cards of particular class is assigned to
academic advisors. The academic advisors have the responsibility
of keeping track of the academic activities of the students of the class
allotted to them.
2. Students and parents should contact their respective Academic
advisor for any querry or clarifcation.
3. The Progress Cards are sent to the parents to provide information
regarding the academic progress of the students and their attendance.
4. The Progress Card contains marks obtained in tests and attendance
details.
5. Progress Card duly signed by the parent/guardian/warden has to be
returned to the academic advisor within three days of its issue.
6. Progress Card are property of the institution. Progress Card are issued
to students periodically through their academic advisors. Students are

informed to return their progress cards with in specifc period after signing
from the parent/guardian. Hall tickets will not be issued to such students
who do not return the progress cards. New progress card will be issued
with a penalty in case of loss or damage.
VI. Awards and Profciency Prizes
1. The Polytechnic offcers profciency prizes to the best students in
studies, in each class every year. The profciency prize is awarded
to the highest scorer in each class.
2. Sri M. Venkatesh Prabhu, HOD of Maths and Science Section, offers
cash prize of Rs. 1000/- to students scoring highest marks in Maths
in I & II semester examinations.
3. Late S.D. Samrajya, 75th Birthday Felicitation Endowment Scholarship
will be awarded to best student of fnal year.
4. Late Amaranath Jain memorial cash prize will be awarded to best
student studying in fnal year in the Department of Electrical and
Electronics Engg.
5. Sri P.V. Bhat, Ex-Principal sponsored cash prize will b e awarded to
best student studying in fnal year in the Department of Computer
Science & Engg.
6. Sri K.M. Bhat, Rtd. Lecturer E & E Section, sponsored cash prize will
be awarded to best student studying in fnal year in the Department
of Electrical & Electronics Engg.
7. Sri Mohammad Sharief, Ex-Lecturer Mechanical section sponsored
cash prize will be awarded to the best student studying in fnal year
in the Department of Mechanical Engg.
8. Sri Sudarshan M. sponsored cash prize in memory of Late Sunil
Kumar (Ex. H.O.D., Computer Science) will be awarded to the best
student studying in fnal year in the Department of Computer Science
& Engineering.
9. Sri Shirthady Sampath Samrajya & Shirthady Sushanth Samrajya
Sponsored cash prize of Rs. 2,500/- in memory of their father late
Sri S.D. Samrajya will be awarded to the Best Outgoing Student of
SNM Polytechnic every year who exhibits all round performance in
academic and extra curricular activities.
10. A cash prize of Rs. 1,000/- sponsored by Mr. Suresh D.B. Lecturer
in Automobile Engg. will be awarded to the First year Automobile
students for securing highest marks in his subject, Automotive
Engines, in the semester exams.

VII. The Library
1. The Library will be kept open on all working days from 9-00 am to
5-00 pm.
2. The Student can borrow 4 books from library (2 from book bank and
2 from library). Books will be issued to students against library cards
from 1.00 to 2.00 PM and from 3.00 to 5.00 PM on all working days
except Saturdays.
3. Reference books and periodicals will be available for reference during
working hours in the library.
4. Books must be returned to library in stipulated time. Violation will
attract fne set by Offce / Library.
5. Perfect silence shall be observed in the library hall.
VIII. Laboratory
1. The students should be regular and punctual in their practical work
in the laboratory.
2. All the equipments and materials given to students for the practical
work should be handled with care. Damages and breakages shall
be paid for together with such penalty as may be imposed by the
principal.
3. The Student should check the equipments and materials before
commencing the experiment and hand over the materials intact to the
lab assistant / person concerned as soon as experiment is completed.
4. Each student must provide himself with the observation note book and
Record Book. Record of practical work must be regularly maintained
and submitted.
5. Laser Prints are available for printing needs of the students in the
computer laboratories. Student must bring A4 size 70GSM paper
for printing. Prints must be taken only in the presence of instructor /
lecturer in the lab. Any kind of damage to printers will be recovered
from concerned students or entire batch of students.

6. Free broadband internet facility is available in every lab and
library. Students are free to use internet during leisure only for study
purposes. Accessing social network sites is prohibited. Violation may
debar the students from entering the library or laboratory.
7. Pen Drives are not allowed to be used in any computers in the college.
Students may carry their DVDs or they can access their fles through
e-mails. It is mandatory to students to have their own e-mail IDs
Students are required to create their own e-mail ID before admission
/ beginning of classes.
IX. Additional Facilities
The college provides training in many activities for the beneft of the
students.
1. Wall Magazine and College Annual Magazine.
2. Driving classes are conducted to the students as per the curriculum.
3. Computer lab facilities with internet are available to all the students
of polytechnic.
4. In order to enhance the language and communication skills, a
language laboratory has been set up in the polytechnic. Students
interested in the development of their language may utilize this facility.
5. Department clubs are organized to improve the soft skills of students.

to help students answer aptitude tests & competitive exams & face
interviews. Smt. Jyothi, Lecturer, E & C Engineering co-ordinates
placement activities.
8. Materials such as calculators are arranged conditionally for
economically poor students.

9. Free Mid-day meals facility will be extended to economically poor and
deserving students subject to availability of funds.
10. Since the technical education emphasizes on the skill and
competencies of pass outs, the students are advised to undergo
industrial training during the vacations after the semester exams
right from 1st semester. Assistance and support will be provided by
the polytechnic authorities for such activities. Students may undergo
short training and prepare a report of the same. Outstanding activities,
involvement in the industrial training will be recognized during annual
day celebrations.
11. Students willing to continue in NCC can join the Army unit of Sri
Mahaveera College in the campus.
12. Students can be a part of the National Service Scheme (NSS). This
provides an opportunity to understand community participation of students
for the welfare of the society. It also helps to develop self confdence
and personality. Sri Ramprasad M., Lecturer, E & E Engineering
co-ordinates NSS activities.
13. Youth Red Cross Unit is functional in the Polytechnic to create
awareness, to reciprocate to community needs and to effectively
manage disasters. Activities are conducted regularly under the Youth
Red Cross unit.
14. Free Open Source Software (FOSS) workshops are held in the
Polytechnic with the support of IIT Bombay. All the department
students participate in these workshops on scheduled slots in their
respective computer labs.
15. Innovation Club is formed in the Polytechnic to identify and nurture
creativity in students. These talents are properly honed by providing
them a platform to develop innovative technical models do what
you learn and exhibit them in the annual fair held in the Polytechnic
16. Satellite based EDUSAT classes are provided to the students of all the
branches. This activity supplements the class room learning. Since
the EDUSAT lectures are delivered by eminent and learned experts,
students get a feel of new teachers in these EDUSAT sessions.
17. Free special coaching classes are arranged during evenings to
academically weaker section of students. These classes are engaged
by the teachers from respective departments besides their assigned
work load as a social responsibility.

RECOMMENDED GUIDELINES FOR PARENTS / GUARDIANS:
This Polytechnic assures you of the best support in the all-round
growth of your child. We expect the parents to reciprocate in our effort to
enforce regularity and discipline. It is recommended that:
1. Parents are required to check upon the timetable allotted to their ward
every semester. Checking upon the timing of the child helps to keep
a track on the activities and to form habits conducive for learning.
2. Parents are expected to know the schedule of the internal assessment
examinations printed in the calendar and help the child to timely
prepare for these examinations which will help gradually to improve
their academic performance.
3. Progress cards are issued within a fortnight of the internal assessment
examinations. Parents are required to ask their child for the progress
report card after every exam and check upon the regular attendance
and academic progress.
4. The parents are free to call the head of the departments or the
concerned academic advisors to clarify any matters entered in the
report cards.
5. Parents vist to the Polytechnic on a regular basis will be highly
appreciated. Parents can meet the Principal preferably between 10-
30 AM to 12 Noon & 3 PM to 4-30 PM to get frst hand information
about the progress of the child.
6. Parents are required to check upon the semester results of the child
and verify the same in the respective department or college offce.
7. If parents have any grievance regarding academic activities they are
welcome to approach the concerned department heads or Principal.
8. Any suggestion or feedback by the parents for the improvement of
this institution willl be appreciated and every effort will be made to
inculcate the same if feasible.
9. Any change in the residential address or contact numbers should be
intimated to the academic advisors of your ward.
10. Parents are morally bound to inform the academic advisor of any
prolonged absence from classes due to medical ailments or personal
reasons.
11. In case of absence from class, a note of excuse signed by the parents
or hostel wardens is mandatory for the students to attend next class.
So parents are required to periodically check the leave record in the
calendar.
12. If the child resides in the Hostel, parents must familiarize with Hostel
rules and regulations.
13. Parents play a vital role in building discipline and maintaining regular
hours of study at home.
