Cell phone number: 682.472.2329 Any other resources besides volunteers requested from the JLA? N/A Please explain how your organization/event supports the JLA focus area of Childrens Issues and Womens Concerns: The event is the finale to the Librarys Summer Reading Club, an annual program that encourages children to continue reading and learning during the summer. In addition to providing materials and guidance to track a childs reading, local businesses donate prizes to incentivize participation. Each child who completes the reading goals will receive a goodie bag with a Reading Club shirt and a book of their own, a Texas Rangers ticket, and other small prizes. Children who continue to participate past the minimum requirements are entered for additional prizes. The Campaign for Grade Level Reading is a collaborative effort by foundations, nonprofit partners, states and communities across the nation to ensure that more children in low-income families succeed in school and graduate prepared for college, a career, and active citizenship. The Campaign focuses on an important predictor of school success and high school graduationgrade-level reading by the end of third grade. The Campaign has identified three challenges to success (see the Infographic below): Readiness Gap, Summer Slide, and Attendance Gap. The Arlington Public Librarys Summer Reading Club is focused on promoting literacy in the community by directly combating Summer Slide. The Library focuses on childrens literacy year round with additional programs, including the popular Reading Corps. Grant funding is crucial to the success of these free literacy programs, supplying the materials needed to make a difference.
How will the JLAs support of your event and contribution of volunteers be recognized and/or publicized at the event? We partner with many members of the community for the Summer Reading Club and include their logos in promotional materials. We will include the JLA logo in any promotional materials that will be printed between the time of acceptance and the final event. We will also recognize the JLA volunteers for their support at the event. Please provide any additional information about your organization and/or this specific event that you feel will be helpful: Last year, 1,053 children age birth to 4 years old and 3,767 elementary age children participated in the Summer Reading Club. Many of these participants attend the celebration at the end of the year. The sheer number of participants is the reason we are requesting volunteers to help make this a fun and safe day of celebration for everyone involved.
