P10IT301 & P10IT401 PROJECT PHASE I AND PROJECT PHASE II

This document gives the guidelines for the conduct of Project Phase I and Project Phase II during
3
rd
semester and 4
th
semester of M.Tech (IT) respectively.
I ASSIGNING SUPERVISORS
The students are to submit their areas of interest to the project coordinator or Head of the
Department. Based on their interests, supervisors will be assigned. If the project is an extension
of mini project, same supervisors will guide the students. If the students are willing to take up a
project in industry, the respective student will have an internal supervisor and external supervisor
assigned by the concerned organization.
II SELECTION OF PROJECT
As soon as a supervisor is allocated, students in consultation with their supervisors should carry
our literature review and come out with a topic. The project should be selected keeping in mind
the following factors:
1. Technical feasibility
2. Time feasibility
3. Should not be an already existing application
4. Use of latest technologies
III CONDUCT OF REVIEWS
Project Phase I
During Project phase I, the students should implement an existing algorithm that is developed for
the same problem statement. During any of the reviews, an external expert may be invited to
evaluate the project implementation.
Three reviews will be conducted during the period of the semester. Progress of the project
planning and implementation is monitored by panel members who are assigned by the respective
project coordinators or Head of the Department. During review I, project idea or topic of the
project may be confirmed along with the following information.
1. Problem statement
2. Resources needed
3. Project Activity Definition and Activity Sequencing
4. Time, Effort and Resource Estimation
5. Risk Factors Identification
6. Resource feasibility
If the project is an extension of mini project submitted during the 2
nd
semester, the students
during their first review should submit one page abstract duly approved by their supervisors and
present the structure of the project implementation.
2

During review II, the progress of the implementation of the existing algorithm is monitored.
During Review III, complete report of the implementation and the results discussion is to be
submitted with the approval from supervisor. Apart from implementing the existing algorithm,
the students should brief their contribution towards the solution to the problem. The respective
supervisors should confirm the completion of the project phase I by their students by signing a
completion form provided by the coordinators.
Completion form - see appendix II for a sample format
At the end of the project Phase I, a report should be submitted. Report format see appendix II
for a sample format. Refer mini project guidelines for formatting the report.
Project Phase II
During project phase II, students must implement their solution to the problem statement
presented during project phase I. The progress of their implementation is monitored through
three reviews by panel of experts. During any of the reviews, an external expert may be invited
to evaluate the project implementation. At the end, of the project phase II, the students should
submit a report (see see appendix II for a sample format). To infer the quality of the project
executed by the student, they must publish their work in any of the International / National
journal (avoid publishing in a paid journal) or reputed International conference proceedings.
Refer mini project guidelines for formatting the report.
IV INTERACTION WITH YOUR GUIDE
It is recommended that every student should meet their supervisor regularly during the course of
the project. The students are expected to maintain a record notebook/file where they can include
a record of their discussions with the supervisor, literature survey details, derivations etc. Such a
system will allow easy and quick access to the details and chronology of the work. The students
should submit report drafts as and when requested by the supervisor or project coordinator.
The final responsibility for producing an error-free report lies with the students and the
respective supervisor.
