The Chalice St. Francis Episcopal Church Eureka MO Pastors Corner For as in one body we have many mem- bersso we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another. Romans 12:4 -5 (Epistle reading for Aug 24) On Sunday, June 1, the idea of two worship services on Sundays was discussed during the Adult Forum time. During June a brief survey was sent to all parishioners, asking whether and how we should implement a second worship service. Forty-five out of 63 people responded to the survey, a response rate of 71%. About 2/3 of the respondents voted for an adding a worship service at 8 a.m. In mid-August, we will do just that. On Sunday, August 17, we will inaugurate 2 worship services every Sunday morning: at 8 a.m. and at 10:15 a.m. As desired by the majority of the survey respon- dents and as approved by the Bishops Committee -- Sunday mornings will be structured as follows: 8 a.m. Holy Eucharist with music (no choir) 9:15-10 a.m. Choir rehearsal. (Childcare available beginning at 9:30 a.m.) 10:15 a.m. Holy Eucharist with music & choir, Christian formation for children. Hospitality with food, coffee, and conversation immediately follows worship. A u g u s t 2 0 1 4 (continued on page 6) The Chalice Page 2

Please take a tag, sign your name, and bring the new pair of shoes to the Lodge by August 10. Thank you for making the beginning of the school year brighter for a child. The Chalice Page 6
Recipe of the Month Submitted by Sylvia Ahmad Serves 8 Ingredients 250 g couscous 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon smoked paprika sea salt freshly ground black pepper 1 medium red onion, peeled 1 medium cucumber 2 ripe tomatoes 1 fresh red chilli 1 bunch of fresh mint, leaves picked ! bunch of fresh coriander, leaves picked 1 bunch of fresh flat-leaf parsley 1 tablespoon tomato pure 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil ! unwaxed lemon, zest and juice from Method Place the couscous, cumin, paprika and a big pinch of salt into a bowl. Stir to com- bine, then pour over just enough boiling water to cover the couscous. Cover the bowl and leave for about 10 minutes. Meanwhile, finely chop the onion, cucumber, tomatoes and chilli (I leave the seeds in, but deseed if you prefer). Finely chop the mint and coriander leaves, and the parsley (including the stalks). Mix the couscous up with a fork, then stir in the tomato pure until well coated (I do this with my hands it's messy, but quite therapeutic!). Add all the chopped vegeta- bles, chilli and herbs and mix well. Stir in the oil and the lemon zest and juice, then season to how you like it. 11:55-12:30 p.m. Adult Forum For most of us, this represents a 15-minute change. The sequence of events on Sunday mornings is the same, just shifted 15 minutes later. The survey uncovered something unexpected: A number of parishioners we rarely see said that an 8 a.m. service is their preference. Several parishioners commented that a 10-ish a.m. service doesnt work for them. But an 8 a.m. service will. So this new worship time will meet the needs of members of our parish family who have been unable to attend regularly. We are opening ourselves up to new people, new times of worship, new whisperings from the Holy Spirit. And by opening ourselves up we are also able to reclaim members of our parish whose needs were not being met. Change is hard. But God is with us in it. And when were open, we find ourselves blessed with unexpected gifts along the way. -- Pastor Sally (continued from Pastors Corner on page 1) The Chalice Page 7 www.stfranciseureka.com

Many local kids benefit by the nourishing breakfasts and/or lunches they receive on a needs basis in their schools. Please keep this in mind in regard to donations to the Food Pantry wagon. For some families to fill in these meals there is a greater demand on items supplied monthly for our local families who are in need. Basics such as peanut butter, jelly, canned fruits, pasta & sauce, canned meats, canned pasta meals, mac & cheese, cere- als, etc. will be so greatly appre- ciated to help through the sum- mer months. July 20 Bishops Committee Highlights Minutes July 20, 2014 Members Present: Jim Bowlin, senior warden; Sally Weaver, vicar; Jack Lauless; Sylvia Ahmad; Joe OReilly, Jim Eckhardt; Bob Champlin; Judy Cody; Suzanne Jones, treasurer; Jackie Selle, clerk. Opening Business: Opening prayer; joys and concerns Joe OReilly moved that we accept the minutes from the June 22 meeting. Jack Lau- less seconded. The motion passed. Treasurers Report Suzanne reported no major concerns for the budget for the year to date. Bob Champlin moved that we accept June financial results subject to audit ap- proval. Sylvia seconded. The motion passed. The finance committee reviewed a preliminary budget request for the diocese for 2015. Vicars Report Sally suggested that we consider applying for a grant that is available from the diocese for matching funds for capital development. This money could be used for replacing the carpet upstairs at the lodge, and part could be used for installing the lighted sign that we got from another congregation. We were notified that our proposal for funding for the tutoring program has been selected to move forward to the next phase at the diocesan level. The Bishops Com- mittee will draft a statement in August formally stating support for the Community Tutoring Program. A small committee will meet in August to complete the second part of the grant request from the diocese for funding for the program. We have a new copier and lease for the parish house. Sally requested that we move the September BC meeting to September 7 to ac- commodate some schedule conflicts. The survey results are in concerning the possibility of adding a second worship ser- vice. The majority of respondents voted for an 8:00 a.m. service on Sunday with a 10:15 service followed by adult forum. Choir rehearsal would be at 9:15 p.m. The worship and music committee recommended that we try it for six months. We dis- cussed the probability of needing to offer the service longer than six months to de- termine if it is viable. Jim Bowlin moved that we begin the second service (at 8:00 a.m.) on August 17. Jack Lauless seconded. The motion passed. The second service will be offered beginning August 17. Senior Wardens Report Jim Bowlin expressed his pride in our ability to tackle tough issues such as (continued on page 13) The Chalice Page 12
Go announcing peace to all... Submitted by Arlene Underwood Francis of Assisi speaks to us today with a message of joy and inner peace 800 years young, fresh and pure as the dawn. Ever praising and thanking God for the particu- lar wonders of His creation, Francis was a lover: of sunlight, fire, water, wind, because they come from Him; of the world He made; of all the children of God - human beings, creatures, plants - sharing our com- mon planetary home. Simplicity and poverty Francis saw as his holy disci- plines, the better to embody the way of Jesus of Naz- areth. Revered as a holy person in tune with God and His creation, Francis of Assisi is a man for all peoples and all times, especially or own, so much in need of light and love and peace. Patricia Fearey Go announcing peace to all. St. Francis Shoeman Drive Update Sunday, July 27, 2014 was the last official day for the Shoeman Drive at St. Francis. No hard data is available yet; that will come in next months Chalice. There is, even so, plenty of evidence that we did a great job and have reason to celebrate success. Thanks to all of those who cleaned out their shoe collections and to those who engaged our community in doing the same. Look to the September Chalice for a full report on this project. Mens Group, August 2 The men are meeting on Saturday, August 2 at 1 p.m. at the Kilderkins Pub, 108C Hilltop Village Center Dr. in Eureka. All men are invited to be a part of this group. Tutoring Ministry Seeks Grant St. Francis members have heard about the growing success of our tutoring program. Most of the tutors come from our parish. Many St. Francis folks know that the program has grown from a tiny handful of students in the community room at the Parish House to a dozen or so students and their tutors at the Lodge. Like the rest of the parish, this ministry is growing and ready to grow more! Jackie Selle, chair of the tutoring program, and her husband Kevin have written a proposal for money from the Diocese through a grant entitled New Ventures in Community Ministries. That grant, if awarded, would provide additional funding to help grow this outreach program so that we can meet more of the educational support needs of students, particularly disadvantaged students, in our community. The grant would support the costs of a number of things neces- sary now and necessary for growth, costs that cannot be part of the current parish budget. For example, the tutoring program needs wi-fi and a couple of electronic devices in order to keep up with the work of the students in their classes. Jackie is also in conversation presently with high school counselors to see if we can offer ACT prep classes classes which would allow us to offer a level of support that costs hundreds of dollars for students who can afford the commercial test prep courses. The parish received good news in July that our grant proposal had been approved at the first level and now will go on to approval at the next level. Committee members are currently meeting to complete the Phase II requirements prior to the submission date of early September. If our project is funded, it will be announced at the Diocesan Convention in November. That will really be cause to celebrate growth at St. Francis! Kathleen McDonald (continued from page 11) finances and budgeting and his confidence in our ability to work through these challenges. Closing Business Closing prayer and temperature check.
