The Secret of Eastvale

An Adventure for the Dragon Age RPG by Green Ronin Publishing


Introduction
IF YOU PLAN ON GOING THROUGH THE
SECRET OF EASTVALE AS A PLAYER STOP
READING NOW!
Adventure Synopsis: The party has traveled for
several days and come across the small village of
Eastvale where the villagers give them a less than
warm welcome.
Jorg the local shopeeper sneas into the party!s
room and pleads for their help. "e e#plains to that
a $itch of the $ilds has placed the village under a
spell and even idnapped Ardnis% his only
daughter. "e begs the party to help him and is
willing to pay them with them a few items he has
managed to ac&uire.
Any investigations around the village offer little
light on the situation and only mae the party more
suspicious or at least confirm that something odd
is going on. After this% they should decide to head
into the woods and face off with the witch.
'n the woods% the party notices that they are being
staled by a pac wolves. $hen the party tries to
attac them% the pac flees. The wolves lead the
adventurers on chase through the woods and right
into a trap.
Eventually% the party arrives at the Rowen!s "ut
(The )$itch of the $ilds* +. This where many of
the ma,or choices facing the party begin. "ere
they learn that Rowen is an apostate but has acted
the village!s healer and wise woman for years.
Practically% everyone in the village owes Rowen
their life and in e#change they have protected her
secret from the Templars and the -hantry for
years. .he is harboring the shopeeper!s pregnant
daughter from her abusive father.
At this point the adventure can tae several
directions. They can return the daughter to her
father. Escort the girl to the Dalish camp where
she can be with her love and the father of her
child. There are many possible outcomes.
What's really going on. Jorg is a racist and an
abusive drun. "e doesn!t now that Ardnis has
fallen in love with a young Dalish hunter% /arren%
and that she is pregnant by him. Jorg has ranted%
raved and threatened several villagers but has
never found out who the father was.
As his daughter has gotten closer to delivery. Jorg
has grown more and more angry. -allden% 0ahla
and Rowen decided it would be best to have the
girl stay in the -hanty. This wored for a while
until Jorg started pounding on the -hantry doors
late one night in a drunen rage. "e threatened to
burn the building to the ground if his daughter
didn!t come out. 't was decided then to hide Arndis
at Rowen!s hut in the woods until she could be
reunited with her love.
Rowen is an Apostate who has spent years being a
healer and wise woman for the village. The entire
village nows that the witch is an apostate and
protects her secret. Each of them owe her their
lives or the life of a family member. The witch
new of the affair with the hunter and plans to go
to the Dalish camp and plead the girl!s case to the
1eeper to accept the girl and the baby so at least
they could be a family together.
The Village of Eastvale
The 0illage of Eastvale is ,ust north east of the
1orcari $ilds but still west of the 2recilian 3orest.
The nearest )ma,or* settlement is 4othering which
is about two days wal away.
Eastvale consists of only a few buildings.
The Inn/Public House: The largest building and
social center of the village. 't is ran by 1ief% who
is also the village!s mayor% and his family. The
food is hardy and filling. The ale is strong. And the
fire is warm and welcoming. The party can get a
day!s room and board for 5 .ilver Pieces in the
common room. 3or 6 .ilver Pieces% they can sleep
in the only private room at the inn.
The Blacksmith's: -allden is Eastvales!s
blacsmith. "e is also the town sheriff. "e eeps
order in town and a wary eye on any outsiders. "e
will mobili7e and lead the villagers in times of
trouble. 1ief has mostly domestic goods. Pots%
pans% cooing nives and tools. "e can repair
armor and weapons but doesn!t have any in stoc.
The Chantry: Eastvale!s -hantry is very small and
only has a staff of three. 't is lead by the Reverend
8other 0ahla and she is assisted by two acolytes%
.ister 8iri and .ister Eoni. There are no Templars
stationed in Eastvale. The place ,ust isn!t big or
important enough. 9ccasionally a couple will
mae the trip from 4othering ,ust to chec up on
things.
The Village Shop: The village shop is closed until
Jorg calms down. 'f the party pees through the
window or tries to brea in they will not find much
of great value. Jorg normally only carries mundane
things that the villagers would be interested in
buying.
Villagers' Homes: There are about a half a do7en
or so peasant hovels. These are ,ust people!s homes
and nothing special is there.
A Warm Dry Bed
The weather has been wet and cold for the last
wee. The party is ready to find some place warm
and dry to spend the night and nice hot meal
would raise their spirits. 9ne of the characters
mentions that he nows of village where they can
rest and resupply before moving on.
The village loos very &uiet and pretty normal.
0illagers eye the party suspiciously and eep to
themselves.
Eventually% the party is met by -allden the local
blacsmith and the town sheriff. "e coldly
welcomes the party and ass them why they are
visiting Eastvale.
"e!ll direct characters to the 'nn. E#plain that he is
the blacsmith and can repair any items for them.
"e tells them that the shop is closed because the
shop eeper% Jorg% is )not feeling well*.
The inn is &uiet and the villagers are still eeping
to themselves. 'f the party decides to start asing
&uestions% see the Investigations section. They will
go out of their way to avoid the party. The food is
good and the ale is fine. As long as the party eep
&uiet there are no problems.
Eventually% the party will turn in for the night.
A Plea for Help
That night Jorg sneas into the party!s room. "e
will absolutely avoid combat and will fall to his
nees and beg for mercy if even a weapon is
drawn.
Jorg e#plains his plight to the party. The village is
under the spell of the $itch of the $ilds. .he
idnapped his daughter who is with child. "e has
no idea what her fiendish plan is. "e doesn!t now
how he avoided falling under the spell of the
$itch. "e can offer the party a few choice items
that he has managed to ac&uire for payment.
The 8ercenary -aptain!s .word. "e only
nows that this is finely crafted sword. "e
doesn!t now any of its other abilities.
A suit of "eavy 8ail Armor
Two 4esser "ealing Potions
9ne 4esser 4yrium Potion
A 8ysterious Potion (The Abomination
Potion+. "e has no idea what the potion
does.
'f the party wants more% he will offer up to two
.overeigns (9pposed 2argaining -hec+. 'f they
are still reluctant% he will elude that this ,ust might
the legendary 3lemeth and if they manage to slay
her they would be heroes and he!s sure that the
-hantry would reward them handsomely.
Jorg e#plains that the 0illagers are eeping a close
eye on him and can!t leave the village but he will
tell the party the location of the $itch!s hut.
Investigations
'f the party decides to do some investigating
before they head off into the forest% they might
learn a bit more but ,ust enough to mae them
suspicious.
The party can use -ommunication ('nvestigation+
to attempt to gain information. They can use
Perception (Empathy+ to detect if some one is
lying. The inhabitants of Eastvale are used to
covering up their secret. These checs should be
T:; <5. Pass or fail% they shouldn!t learn the truth
in the village.
3or the villagers of Eastvale% ,ust use the stats for
the Angry 0illagers in the introductory adventure
The Dalish -urse in the Dragon Age RPG G8!s
Guide.
The villagers won!t reveal too much information.
'f they are intimated or threatened% they will refer
the party to -allden% 1eif or 0ahla. 2ribery will
get the party nowhere% "owever% if they use
indness they can get some information (not all it
is totally true+.
Rowen is a harmless% cra7y old woman in
the woods.
Jorg is a drunen bastard and probably
illed his wife.
Jorg overcharges for his goods.
Jorg cheats at cards.
Jorg is racist asshole.
Ardnis ,ust ran away and they are not sure
who the father of her child is or where she
went.
The forest can be a dangerous place.
'f the party goes to &uestion 1ief% -allden or
0ahla% they will get similar results. 'f they attempt
bribery or intimation% they will be ased to leave
the village. 'f they don!t &uietly leave% then the
:P- will shut up and wait until -allden can
mobili7e the entire village and force the party to
leave. The following additional information can be
learned from 1eif% -allden and=or 0ahla if the
party is nice (9nce again% not all of this
information is true+;
There was not enough proof to convict Jorg
of his wife!s murder.
Rowen sometimes acts as a midwife. 2ut
Ardnis didn!t run to her.
Ardnis probably ran off to 4othering. They
don!t now who the father is but they
suspect it was a member of one of the
merchant caravans that Jorg deals with.
'f they party tries to &uestion .ister Eoni or .ister
8iri% they get involved with some of the drama of
the village. Eoni will be polite and helpful but will
refer the characters to 0ahla for any specifics
about Rowen% Jorg and Ardnis. .he is more
worried about eeping her relationship with
-allden a secret. Go ahead an run with this any
way you want to. .he also nows that 8iri wants
out of Eastvale and will do anything to do it.
'f the characters don!t see out 8iri% she will find
them. .he nows is that the village is eeping
some secret and she has no idea what it is. "er
only goal is to get out of Eastvale. .he will try to
tric% seduce or coerce her way into the party!s
favor to achieve this goal. .he will turn on the
villagers and even the other members of Eastvale!s
-hantry if she thins it will get her out of Eastvale.
'f the party decides that they want to bring 8iri
along they can easily convince 0ahla to issue a
$rit of Pilgrimage basically maing 8iri a
wandering 4aysister. 0ahla doesn!t need any
convincing% she!s looing for an e#cuse to get rid
of 8iri. The catch is that she!s stuc with party as
a )spiritual adviser* and missionary. .he is placed
under the protection=into the custody of the party.
Were Being Watched
The woods are creepy. An unnatural fog slins
across the ground. The characters feel lie they
are being watched from the shadows. They
occasionally hear a twig snap or some leaves
rustle. Play the atmosphere of a spooy forest.
The party is being staled by >ellow 3ang and his
pac. ?se 8abari $ar Dog stats for the wolves
from the Dragon Age RPG G8!s Guide. >ellow
3ang!s stats are at the end of the adventure.
The party can mae Perception (.eeing+ T:; <@
and at least a @ on the Dragon Die to get a glimpse
of something large and gray moving through the
shadowy woods.
'f they bother to checing% Perception (Tracing+
T:; <A% they will find unusually large wolf tracs.
The wolves will attempt to lure the party into a
trap (the lair of a pair of giant spiders+. 3irst% they
will ,ust let the party see them and then run away.
'f that doesn!t wor% they will attac the party. :o
need to set this up with miniatures if you are using
them. The wolves will attac for one round and
then retreat. >ou should use one wolf per party
member. They will attempt this twice. Their goal is
have the party start staling or chasing them. The
wolves will lead the party straight into the .piders!
4air. The party can attempt a -unning
(:avigation+ T:; <B to determine that the wolves
are leading them away from Rowen!s "ut.
'f the party doesn!t fall for the wolf pac!s trap
then they will ambush the party. There should be
one wolf per party member plus an an additional
two wolves and >ellow 3ang. 't should become
clear that these are not ordinary wolves with a
-unning (:ature 4ore+ T:; <A. They are large and
smart. The wolves will use very good tactics.
They will gang up on wea party members. They
will retreat and regroup. They will hit and run.
They now that mages and archers can be very
dangerous and will go after them. >ellow 3ang
will sit bac and avoid any direct combat. "e
move around the battlefield and aid the pac
where and when they need it. 'f it loos lie a
player character is going to fall. >ellow 3ang will
charge in and finish off the character. >ellow 3ang
will retreat to Rowen!s "ut as soon as things start
going badly for the wolves or he is at or near 5CD
4ife Points. $hen >ellow 3ang retreats% the other
wolves will aid his escape even if it means their
deaths.
The Spiders We!
Two Giant .piders (use the Giant .piders from the
G8!s Guide+ are hiding in the trees. The party
should mae a Perception (.eeing+ chec vs the
.piders! De#terity (.tealth+ for surprise. This fight
will get progressively more difficulty.
3irst Round=.urprise Round; The spiders
will start off by using their $eb Attac
against the closet party members.
.econd Round; The .piders spring from
the trees and attac the party.
Third Round; >ellow 3ang and his pac
,oin the fight and attac the party. ?se the
wolves! tactics from the previous section
and remember >ellow 3ang will retreat to
Rowen!s "ut.
'f the party decides to loo for loot let them mae
a Perception (.earching+ T:; <@. 'f successful%
they find a humanoid shaped cocoon in a nearby
tree. 'nside they find the desiccated remains of a
Dalish "unter. They can scavenge a 4ong 2ow of
Dalish manufacture% a .hort .word and A5 .ilver
Pieces.
"o#ens Hut
2y the time the party arrives% Rowen has had a
chance to prepare her defenses. .he has placed a
Glyph of Paralysis (.pellpower; <E+ ,ust inside the
door. .he has .pell $isp and Roc Armor cast on
herself. >ellow 3ang has been healed of any
in,uries he received during the previous fight with
the player characters. .imon the $oodsman is at
her side for protection. .he has consumed enough
lyrium potion to restore her 8ana.
Rowen!s hut is small a fairly unremarable. 't has
one front door and two shuttered windows on the
front side side of the building. 'nside it has only
two rooms. There is the front room which serves
as itchen=dining=living area and a bac room that
serves as a bedroom. Ardnis is hiding in the bed
room.
'f the party taes the time to inspect the hut from
the outside% they can attempt a -unning ("ealing
or :atural 4ore+ T:; <A to recogni7e the various
herbs hanging to out to dry as the common
ingredients for various healing salves and
poultices (or you can ,ust call it Elfroot+.
'f the party tries to snea up on the hut% the
inhabitants are on alert and opposed Perception
and .tealth checs are in order.
'f the party is polite and tries to tal first. Rowen
will feel them out and use her Perception
(Empathy+ to detect any lies and try to determine
their intentions before letting them in and
revealing the truth. .he will as them to escort her
and Ardnis to the Dalish camp.
'f they go in fighting% Rowen will call out and
give them one chance to stop the fight and tal. 'f
they don!t she will see the fight to end. Remember%
the Glyph near the door% it should stop the first
party members through the door. Rowen is no
murderer. .he will not ill the party. 'f the party
loses% she maes sure that they are disarmed and
then will e#plain what is going on and still as
them to escort her and Ardnis to the Dalish camp.
.he will do her best to heal them and has two
4esser 4yrium Potions that she will give to assist
any mage in the party.
'f the party should happen to win this fight. Rowen
will still e#plain what is going on and her plan
with her dying breath. .he will give them her
Dalish staff so the elves will trust the party and
beg them to tae Ardnis to the Dalish. Rowen has
used her healing magic to e#tend her life but the
rigors of combat proved to be too much for her. :o
matter what the party tries they cannot save her.
.he will die. 'f the party ills Rowen% .imon and
>ellow 3ang will not help them and probably fell
during the fight anyway.
The Am!ush
A band of -hasind brigands ambushes the party on
the way to the Dalish camp. ?se the stats for the
-hasind .talers in the G8!s Guide. There should
be one .taler per party member (including
.imon% >ellow 3ang% Ardnis and Rowen+ plus an
additional two more. The .talers will rely mostly
on their Archery and .tealth Talents to ambush the
party.
As the last bandit falls% another bandit pops up
from the bushes and fires an arrow into the group.
The arrow heads straight for Ardnis. At the last
moment% Rowen ,umps in front of the attac and
taes the arrow. 't doesn!t matter how many 4ife
Points Rowen has or how much damage the arrow
does. This is narrative point in the story. Rowen
will die.
.he will e#plain how she has lived passed her
prime and that the party shouldn!t waste their
energy trying to heal her. 't ,ust won!t wor even if
they try. .he will beg them to finish their tas and
deliver Ardnis to the Dalish. .he will offer her
staff to the party and tell them to show it to the
Dalish as proof that they bring word from her.
"ere is another opportunity for the player
characters to gain a couple of companions. 'f
.imon survived the fight% he will insist on taing
Rowen!s body bac to her hut for proper disposal.
'f the party returns to Rowen!s hut or decide to go
bac with .imon% they can easily convince him to
,oin them.
'f >ellow 3ang survives the fight and .imon
doesn!t% the wolf will guard Rowen!s body from
scavengers until he starves to death. 'f .imon taes
Rowen!s body bac to her hut% >ellow 3ang will
accompany him. 9nce Rowen!s remains have been
properly attended to% if a player character attempts
to befriend >ellow 3ang have them mae a
-ommunication (Animal "andling+ T:; <6 chec.
9n a success% they have gained a loyal wolf
companion.
ote: 'f the party managed to ill Rowen at her
hut there is no need to run this encounter ,ust go
onto The !alish Camp or "eturn to #astvale
depending on their choices.
The Dalish $amp
The Dalish sentries are very cold to the party and
as them to leave until they show Rowen!s staff.
They will then lead them to the clan!s 1eeper%
2ayrene.
'f the party hasn!t figured it out by now% 2ayrene
will e#plain the story of Rowen and how she had
helped the Dalsih over the years and that the clan
had adopted the witch as part of their own even
though she is a shemlen.
The party needs to mae an opposed Test
2ayrene!s $illpower (3aith+ 0s a player
character!s -ommunication (Eti&uette+. 9ne party
member should be appointed as the spoesman for
the group. 9ther party members may aid this
chec. They will tae the appropriate penalty to
their chec. An assisting character who succeeds
adds the result of his Dragon Die to the
spoesman!s total. There are some modifiers for
this test.

'f they fail then 2ayrene refuses to accept Arndis.
/arren will become angry and proclaim that he
will tae Ardnis as his wife anyway and move to
Denerum. 'f they succeed then 2ayrene will accept
the girl into the clan as a toen of respect to
Rowen.
At this time% Jorg the Abomination attacs the
Dalish -amp. "e is covered in blood and still
carries the empty vial that held the Abomination
Potion. "e calls out to his daughter and accuses
her of terrible things and calls her unsavory names.
"e!ll accuse the party of being betrayers% oath
breaers% nifeFear lovers and worse. ?se your
imagination. "e has a hoard of Enraged -orpses
with him (various Eastvale villagers who he has
murdered including -allden% Eoni and 1eif% and
possibly the -hasind bandits or Rowen if the party
did not dispose of the bodies.+ 8ost of this fight
occurs off screen. Enraged corpses will be fighting
the other Dalish all around the camp.
Jorg and several of the Enraged -orpses attac the
party at the meeting with 2ayrene. The Enraged
-orpses will attac whomever is closest. This
combat should be chaotic with Dalish hunters (?se
the Dalish Raider stats from G8!s Guide+. and
Enraged corpses ,oining the fray and then leaving
it for new targets. 1eep reminding the party about
the sounds of battle all around them. >ou don!t
have to do full combats between the "unters and
the -orpses ,ust a &uic contest of combat sills to
see who lives and who dies. The main focus
should be on the fight between the party and Jorg.
Don!t overwhelm the party but don!t mae it easy
on them either. 'f the party is winning &uicly
have a few more Enraged -orpses ,oin the fight. 'f
they are losing then have a couple of Dalish
"unters ,oin in. 1eep the action going.
'f Ardnis survives the encounter then the party can
again attempt to convince 2ayrene to accept the
girl as before. 'f /arren survived he will also assist
(,ust grant the party a G@ bonus+. 'f /arren died in
the fight% then party taes an additional F@ penalty
to their chec. 2ayrene doesn!t want to be
reminded of his dead son and what he considers
his death due to betrayal of his heritage. 'f they
still fail% /arren will tae Ardnis and the couple
moves to Denerum.
'f /arren is dead and 2ayrene refuses to aid Ardnis
the party needs to decide what to do with girl.
8ore than liely they will return to Eastvale.
"eturn to Eastvale
4ots of different things could be happen here
depending on previous events and choices.
'f the party decided to double cross Rowen and
,ust bring Ardnis bac to her father% then Jorg will
pay them and then they go on their way. They will
see a posting on the -hantry 2oard. Jorg is wanted
for the murder of his daughter and a Dalish elf.
They also end up with the Abomination Potion
which in its own way can be a good armic
reward.
'f Jorg too the Abomination Potion% he went on a
rampage through the village first. 8ost of the
buildings are smoldering ruins by the time the
party returns. 0ahla% 8iri (if she isn!t already with
the party+ and few other random villagers are
hiding in the -hantry. They are waiting for help
and some one to escort them to 4othering where
they can start new lives.
%inal &otes
There are lots of different directions that the player
characters can tae with this adventure. There!s no
way to predict every choice that a group of player
characters may mae. Just loo to the descriptions
of the ma,or :P-!s and the encounters for
guidance. Just eep the story interesting and be
fle#ible.

Arndis The Daughter
The lovely young daughter of Jorg. .he fell in love
with a young Dalish hunter% /arren% and the couple
conceived a child. Arndis has hid the identity of
the father from Jorg.
Ardnis is very &uiet and shy. -ombat frightens her.
.he has been physically and emotionally abused
her whole life and these scars run deep.

Bayrene the Dalish )eeper
2ayrene is the 1eeper of the Dalish clan that
travels through the area. This clan has adopted
Rowen thans to her help. Despite this 2ayrene is
not fond of shemlen. "e has a low opinion of
humans and a lower opinion of members of the
-hantry. The only thing he dislies more are -ity
Elves who he believes have betrayed their Dalish
heritage.
2ayrene is stubborn and set in his ways. "e
doesn!t anger easily.

-allden is one of the few villagers who wasn!t
born in Eastvale. The villagers don!t much about
his past other than he is former mercenary and for
some reason left his company. At first the villagers
were apprehensive about -allden but he &uicly
earned their trust.
"e is the most silled $arrior in the village. "e
was chosen as the village!s sheriff. $hile he
doesn!t have much trouble with the locals. "e
always eep an eye on any visitors to the village.
"e is worried about his relationship with .ister
Eoni. :ot only is she half his age but she is also a
sister in the -hantry and such things are forbidden.
-allden is gruff but fair. "e can easily recogni7e
competent warriors in the group. "e dislies Jorg
and wishes the man dead but will up hold laws
rather than let his emotions get the best of him.

Jorg is the most hated man in the village. "e
charges nearly astronomical prices in his shop. "e
is a gambler and not always an honest one. "e is
an abusive and mean drun. And most outspoen
racist especially when it comes to the Dalish. The
villagers are almost certain that Jorg illed his wife
in drunen rage but could never prove it.
Jorg will be mostly sober when he is around the
player characters. "e will avoid addressing or
even looing at any Elves in the party. "e will try
to deal with ,ust the humans. Jorg is a coward and
bully

Due to his own hatred and rage the Abomination
potion wors differently on him. 't has
transformed him into something else% a strange
being that is neither a true abomination nor an
undead. "e has armed himself the goods that he
has promised the party as payment and went on a
rampage thru Eastvale.

corpse within AC yards as an Enraged -orpse. The
corpse raises on that round and will begin
attacing.

of the character he is attacing. The attac does an
additional <dHG8agic penetrating damage (<dHGA+
and heals Jorg and e&ual amount up to his
ma#imum "ealth.

some unfortunate side effects.

'f the player characters manage to get this potion
then use these stats.
$hen a character drins this potion% he gains a G5
2onus to his .trength. The side effect is that as
soon as the character drins the potion he comes

.pellpower of <H. The effects of the potion end
when the effects of the $aling 2omb spell end.

dwarven smiths as payment to a long forgotten
mercenary captain.

This 'ron 2ar staff was created by a clan of
Dalish Elves as gift to Rowen for her aid over the
years.
)ast Creation: The staff reduces the .tunt Point
cost of the 3ast -asting stunt to A .tunt Points but
only if the original and the second spell are
-reation .pells.
Penetrating $rcane 'ance: The Pierce Armor stunt
costs only one .tunt Point when attacing with
Arcane 4ance.
