CERVANTINO

The International Cervantes Festival (FIC), popularly known as "Cervantes", is held every year in the city of
Guanajuato, located in the center of the United Mexican States. Guanajuato is a small colonial town. The festival
was born in the mid-twentieth century, while still representing the interludes
of Miguel de Cervantes in the streets of several cities in Guanajuato. In 1972,
with support from the federal government, the initiative dela wife of

Origin and history
Despite not being a crowded city, Guanajuato, where the festival takes place, is culturally very rica.4 The wealth
generated by the exploitation of the mines during the colonial period began the tradition of the theater and other
events cultural to satisfy the desires of the middle and alta.4 4 Traditionally the city sponsor concerts, dance and
theatrical performances, not only in theaters but also in many places pequeas.4 In 1953, Enrique Ruelas, professor
University of Guanajuato, initiated annual theatrical interludes titled Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. In 1972, he
founded the Colloquium Cervantes symposium that took place between June and September as an extension of
theatrical activity dedicated to the author of Don Quixote. That same year, President Luis Echeverra lvarez
proposed creating an international cultural festival based in the city of Acapulco, however, the tradition of the
interludes guanajuatenses prevailed over any other motivation for Guanajuato was selected as the venue. Thus the
idea was conjugated the first international event of 1972 with performances from fourteen countries, including
Mexico. So also the 1972 event is considered formally as the foundation of festival.3
Quickly the festival attracted the attention of eminent personalities like Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of
Edinburgh, who attended in 1975. In 1976, the Ministry of Education, the State of Guanajuato, the namesake city
and the University of Guanajuato established by decree the creation of an organizing committee in charge of
inviting both Mexican artists of different nationalities. Some of the first to be invited were Mario Moreno Cantinflas
and Dolores del Rio. The committee continued in charge of the Festival, working with the National Council for
Culture and the Arts, the National Institute of Fine Arts and the Institute of Culture of Guanajuato. In 1978, Juan
Carlos I de Borbn and Sofia of Spain attended as guests of honor.
In the 1980s, the Festival featured performances by Lazar Berman, Mercedes Sosa, the New York Philharmonic
Orchestra, Joan Baez, Gilbert Bcaud, Mario Lavista, Guillermo Velazquez and Lions in the Sierra de Xich, the
National Ballet Canada, the Dance Theatre of Alwin Nikolais, the Bolshoi Theatre, Sankai Juku, Scena STU Theatre
and Puppet Theatre Hungra.
In 1989, UNESCO declared the city of Guanajuato Cultural Heritage of Humanity, allowing restoration of the
majority of both colonial architecture as the nineteenth century, including teatros.
During the last decade of the twentieth century artists participated in the festival as the Amsterdam Guitar Trio,
Voices of Change, the Vienna Quintet, Guadalupe Pineda, Krzysztof Jakowicz, Krystyna Borucinska, Kronos Quartet,
Madredeus, the Open Theatre in Belgrade , Lindsay Kemp Company and the Royal Shakespeare Company.3
From the year 2000 started the custom of designating both Mexican states and countries or regions as special
guests. In 2001 the Oceania region was invited along with the state of Veracruz. The actions of those years included
Hlne Grimaud, Eugenio Toussaint, John Fornell and Los Van Van, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Enrique
Bunbury, Los Tigres del Norte, Panteon Rococo, Meno Fortas and Les 7 Doigts of Main.3
The city was declared "Cervantes Capital of America" in 2005, which resulted in the federal government coined
silver coin conmemorativa.3
In 2010, the 38th edition of the festival was dedicated to the celebration of the Bicentennial of Independence and
Centennial of the Mexican Revolution. Three Mexican states, Chihuahua, Michoacn and Quertaro, along with
three countries, Argentina, Colombia and Chile were the special guests, as they also celebrated their bicentennial
that same year. The 2010 edition had 3161 thirty-one artists countries, with special emphasis on traditional music

The shows are performed in the forty-nine theaters, squares and other related places of the city. Also, there are
shows that are held in other places of the state and other cities so simultnea.The festival takes these many places,
both outdoors and indoors, including: the Juarez Theater, Home Theater and the Teatro Cervantes. They are also
used: the Patio of the School of Industrial Relations and the State Theater, the Plaza San Roque, the esplanade of
Alhndiga and Mines Theatre. Moreover, it also has Valenciana Church and Ex-Hacienda de San Gabriel Barrera. For
exposures also uses seven museums rooms distintos.
The festival represents the arrival of tourists and income. In 2010 it is estimated that revenue was 423 million
pesos, which represented an increase of 53% over the previous year, and a hotel occupancy increased by 39%. The
total number of visitors, in 2010, was estimated at 179,000, with 463,000 tickets sold for the various shows. Other
125 000 tourists visited thirty-seven cities in seventeen states of Mexico related travel festival.

Show type
Having been dubbed the writer Miguel de Cervantes, the festival emphasizes the creations in Spanish, so it keeps
the original proposal of the University of Guanajuato Theater Group represents the "starters". Moreover, the
