Rough draft

The writing process can be very complex with outlines and multiple drafts, but it can also
be very simple. I, Brenna, and Blaire believe writing begins with certain or random ideas that
one develops in their mind from their source of inspiration. My process begins when I let my
ideas spill out onto the page until I cannot write anymore and then go back and organize my pa-
per. If it is a topic I am interested in I could write about it almost without thinking such as topics
on swimming or animals. If my knowledge is limited on the topic or it is a boring assignment for
school I would need to organize my thoughts in an outline so my ideas are more easily perceived.
My ideas in my head are not always organized so sometimes my process of writing takes more
work of revising than usual. After many drafts and finally getting to my hard copy, I think that it
is a good paper after many revisions, but a majority of my high school teachers would not agree.
Even if I brought my final copy into a writing conference with Ms. Gettig, an AP English teach-
er, she would find many places where she thought it needed work. Ralph Waldo Emerson de-
clares, People do not deserve to have good writing, they are so pleased with bad. Connecting
to Emersons quote, I would be satisfied with my bad paper. The idea he is portraying from
this quote is that one can be satisfied with their writing and think it is good but not every person
will call it good writing. We, as students, have to figure out what writing style suits us best.
Good writing or bad, it is a way to express ones own feelings and ideas differently in
their own way. I only write when its an assignment for class or because it is required. I enjoy
writing about things that interest me such as sports, animals or a good book that I have read.
Others write for enjoyment and because it is a way to feel different emotions. To make writing
more interesting, people often develop their writing to resemble a conversation to make the read-
er feel as if they are experiencing the situations that go on throughout the writing. Many people

write to feel good about themselves or to release anger or frustration. We have shared knowledge
in the form of writing for over thousands of years, dating back to scribes in Ancient Egypt. Writ-
ing is also a form of communication, even if it is just text messaging. Teenagers today have their
own lingo in text messaging that some adults don't understand.
Living in the 21st century we have access to many different kinds of technology, the
iPad, laptops, even google glasses, but when I think of writing, pen and paper always come to
mind. Writers do not need a computer to write a good paper, though some authors find it easier
with one. The important materials that a writer should have is a good source of inspiration and a
effective way to organize ideas such as a list or an outline.Inspiration and motivation are the
most important because that is what gets the writer going, whether it is a sport you play or your
cat or dog that inspires you.
As I was interviewing a good friend Blaire, she told me what inspires her writing, similar
to my inspiration with sports, past experiences and future goals which correspond to diving
and her career. As athletes it takes a lot of motivation and focus to do schoolwork, Blaire and I
have similar methods of staying focused, that is eating snacks and taking a lot of breaks while
writing. I think it is easier for Blaire and I to focus when we write certain types of styles such as
short stories and school papers. We tend to have a harder time focusing on poems.
Though we have similar ways of staying focused, Blaire and Is process of writing differs
when it comes to organizing our ideas. When I feel the need to make an outline to organize my
thoughts on a topic I am not familiar with I will make one. In contrast to my process, Blaire will
only create an outline if it is required. I can relate to Blaires process because I am used to writ-
ing my paper with no preparation and going back to revise and organize as much as I can to

make it better. Overall, our processes are fairly similar because normally, like Blaire, I would
begin to write with no kind of preparation.
Good writing may seem to be good to one person, but not everyone will agree. A well
written paper might seem good to Blaire, but two other people might not think the same. Lamott
states, Good writing is about telling the truth, Blaire and I both disagreed on this statement be-
cause made up writing can be a lot more interesting than something that happens in our everyday
lives. Writers can make their work come alive by stretching the truth or even lying about a situa-
tion.
My general definition of writing is a pen writing words on a piece of paper, typing on a
computer, or sending a text message. Writing is about expressing your thoughts and sharing ide-
as; without both writing would mean nothing. I, Blaire, think writing should be personal and
have experiences throughout, good and bad, to help create a more understanding perspective for
the reader. Readers, especially me, become more interested in the work when seeing something
you can relate to. That being said, writing, in an ideal world, should also come naturally and it
should not be something to stress about. The words should just flow from your brain to your
hand without hesitation. The way you talk your first language to people should be the way you
write to people too. Writing should not be something that defines you but your words define it.
Most of the time I am writing on social media. Whether the writing be via Facebook,
Twitter, or Instagram, you can almost always find some new information about my life on them.
Though a lot of people think social media isnt that beneficial for you, I think it is a good way to
relieve stress and any other emotional build ups I have. Email is also something I do often and is
an easy way to get your message across rather than a letter. Other times, I write because it is a
required assignment or an essay question on a test.

I prefer the talking method though, and think I can get more out of a conversation by my
mouth saying words. On rare occasions, I write because it is a good way of releasing emotions
and saying what you have to say but in the form of a hand saying it. To get the right word in the
right place is a rare achievement. To condense the diffused light of a page of thought into the
luminous flash of a single sentence, is worthy to rank as a prize composition just by it-
self...Anybody can have ideas--the difficulty is to express them without squandering a quire of
paper on an idea that ought to be reduced to one glittering paragraph. (Mark Twain).
For me, I, Blaire, use my laptop/ google for resources if I need an idea or need to find a
more advanced vocal word. Also I like to use my phone for inspiration or just to take a break
from writing. I get some of my best ideas when I just stop and take a break from what I am trying
to concentrate most on. Usually, I try and text or call some of my friends to talk and suddenly
will get some genius idea just by having a conversation with them. Plus, I use teachers and other
students as a resource for writing; I like to get their opinions/ thoughts for certain topics. I think
getting a teachers opinion is very helpful and gives me a good insight on writing and what he/she
really wants. Other students advice helps a lot too because they probably have different ideas and
theories that you can use to create a thesis or paper around.
Brenna and Is writing and emotions towards it varies in many ways but is also the same.
Brenna is a very laid back writer and doesnt stress easily about big assignments. This is mainly
shown through what she does when she has writers block. Brenna simply walks her dog or just
steps outside to get some fresh air, which I think is pretty content. I, on the other hand, either eat
my feelings towards what I am writing away, or just start screaming at my mom for no reason at
all. Brennas way of staying calm and cool probably benefits her more in the end than mine ever
did. Writing does bring out the best and worst in both of us. Along with that, Brenna and I use

basically the same technique before we start writing. We both sit there, think about what we are
supposed to write about, and then write. We both prefer the let your mind do the thinking and
then just have your hand write it method. On top of that, Brenna and I, both love writing short
stories. We both are pretty creative but straight to the point kind of people. I think we can both
manage short stories pretty well and we dont stress or feel worried when writing them.
Brenna and I have one common trait that I think stands out the most. Both of our writings
are usually inspired by something/someone. We take past experiences and use them for our ad-
vantage. Brenna uses swimming references and events to kind of form some anecdotes and other
details in her essays; I use diving as my source of writing. I think writing becomes easier and
better when using something you are so comfortable with and do every day. Fiction is reality,
and lots of good writings is based off of reality. Brenna and I have been through so much, sports
wise, that is makes writing about experiences so fluent for us. We also both find inspiration and
character from out sports. Involving our emotions in our writing through sports makes everything
simpler and more in depth. I believe this is both of our strong points and we can really create
great writing pieces with the use of our values and dreams.
