Application in industry

The SER 260 meets the

ever-increasing need to closely
monitor the events in process plants,
particularly those leading up to and
immediately after a crisis, shutdown
or other abnormal condition. The fast
1 millisecond resolution between
events, irrespective of the number of
inputs in the system, enables plant
engineers to analyse hardcopy
reports in detail and pinpoint fault
conditions in a fraction of the time it
would take even a trained operator
relying on plant knowledge.
Down-time is kept to a minimum.
Savings on Predictive Maintenance
are effected by pinpointing minor
problems before they develop into
major ones. The free-format
message capability on hardcopy
storage of events is an immediate
assistance to plant engineers in
preventing catastrophic shutdown or
failure by identifying plant-wide faults,
in addition to those points which went
into alarm.
The SER 260 may, in conjunction
with a host computer, be used to
implement a Statistical Process
Control/Statistical Quality Control
system either as original equipment,
or with little disruption as a retrofit
installation.

MANAGEMENT SYSTEM SOFTWARE FOR
PC/COMPATIBLE
The SER 260 is a 4064 point distributed data acquisition system
with 1ms resolution on all inputs, multi-port communications
facilities (including Conet networking) and programmable via
the built-in keyboard with interactive LCD display and a PC.
SER 260 Sequential Events Recorder
Model No: C1461/2/3
The system monitors a process and
determines whether it is operating
within specifications. Collected data is
charted and these are used to identify
problem areas that are throwing the
process out of control. From this,
operators can make on-line
corrections before process limits are
exceeded and the output is brought
into a tighter, more predictable control.
The system performs all critical data
collection, calculations, filing and
storage while providing operators with
a real-time monitoring tool.
Omni-4000 is the PC/Compatible
based data management system
software.
System Hardware
One SER 260 system may consists of
up to 32 sub-racks, each with a
maximum of 512 inputs but not
exceeding a total of 4064 points.
<%-2>Each system has one Master
sub-rack with up to 31 slaves. The
Master consists of up to 12 input cards
(384 points), the Communications
Processor card (which has the main
CPU, 800 event history queue and
handles all internal and external
communications) and the Master
Module which houses the keyboard,
display and 24-column events printer.
A spare card slot is allocated for the
Time Sync Card which will be used for
external real-time synchronisation of
the entire system.
Communications Ports
The SER 260 has five interface ports
(which may operate at different baud
rates), four of which may be used for
remote printing, computer
communications, cassette recorder
storage, modem interface, RTUs for
SCADA systems and PLCs. The fifth
is reserved for the external real-time
synchronisation input. These ports
are: 3 x RS232 ports, one of which
may be optionally configured as an
RS422 port, and 1 x Conet Local Area
Network port. Any of the ports (except
Time Sync) may be used to
communicate with a PC for message
editing and uploading of the SER
internal configuration file or event
history for safe keeping (see
Programming).
Distributed Events Recording
One of the many powerful features of
the SER 260 is the ability to operate on
a distributed, networked system. Up
to 32 SER 260s may be connected to
one Conet Network for plant-wide
distributed acquisition, retaining 1
millisecond resolution on each input!
Typically, Conet would be used to
bring information back to a central host
computer for analysis of events which
occurred prior to and after a shutdown
or malfunction. See Page 8.
Time Synchronisation
The SER 260 may be synchronized to
an external time source, via the
potential-free contact input on the
Comms Proc (Communications
Processor) card. This may be
synchronized to 50 Hz, 60 Hz, 1 hour,
1 minute or 1 second. A GPS system
may be connected to this port to
provide the synchronising pulse. A
GPS based time sync module from
Omniflex will interface directly with the
time sync port for large system

synchronisation between SERs in
different locations in the country are
required (e.g. power utility faults on a
national grid).
Derived Inputs, Status Points
and Periodic Report
Sixteen Derived Inputs (which
operate in the same way as Group
Alarms in annunciators) are provided,
the first five of which have Form C
(change-over) relays available at the
rear terminal panel. Any number of
field inputs may be tagged (grouped)
to each (any or all) of these Derived
Inputs.
Twenty Status Points are provided
which operate in much the same way
as Derived Inputs, except that they
may only have one alarm point
(including any of the Derived Inputs)
tagged to them. These are the only
alarms logged on the Periodic
Report which may be set to print out
on any or every hour, on the hour. The
20 Status Points may therefore
considered to be the most important
alarms in the system. The Periodic
Report may be set to print only if there
has been a change of state on any of
its inputs and may also be set to print
out one minute after any change of
state of its inputs, thus providing plant
operators with an up-to-date hard
copy of vital plant information.
Every field input, Derived Input and
Status Point has a message
associated with it. All events are
time-tagged to within one millisecond
of occurrence so that even if a printer
is slow, out of paper, or disconnected,
the correct information is printed or
transmitted to the host computer for
analysis and filing.
Field Inputs
Due to the vast number of signals that
may be wired to each subrack (Master
or Slave), field inputs are terminated in
one of several types of Field
Termination Board (see pages 6 & 7)
and from there brought into the
SER 260 input card directly via plug-in
multi-core cables. These Field
Termination Boards are mounted
remotely from the SER 260 subrack in
the control cabinet and accept inputs
from 16 to 250 V ac or dc, providing
2500 V isolation on these. Stringent
measures have been taken to protect
the SER 260 against high voltages,
excessive noise and even lightning
strikes on the input lines.
Self Testing
The Comms Proc card performs a
number of system checks and tests as
ongoing background tasks, one of
which is the testing of all inputs at one
second per 32 inputs.
Powerful savings tool
The SER 260 is a product that can stand alone
as a powerful events analysis tool for
down-time savings, preventive maintenance
and quality/process refinement. It can also
grow into expanding plant needs, with no extra
communications hardware by networking it,
together with many other Conlog industrial
monitoring and control products, into a
supervisory system for total plant analysis,
trending, charting and control.o

Messages
It is easy to create messages on the
SER 260, using SUPPORT 260, the
PC-based software package, supplied
free with every unit. Powerful
message display and printing
capabilities of the SER 260 facilitate
fault analysis before, during and after
critical event recording. Each input
point has an Into Alarm and a
Return to Normal legend which may
be the system default message or
customised to the requirement.
SUPPORT 260 automatically keeps
a backup copy of the message file plus
a backup copy of the systems internal
configuration file (which is uploaded
from the SER 260 via any of the serial
or Conet ports), on disk for
safe-keeping.
SUPPORT 260 use an editor and a
menu-driven full screen display for
easy programming. Message
`structures allow standard formats
(wording, date, time etc.) for groups of
points to be implemented which
conserves memory for the message
file while at the same time speeding up
message creation. To further save
time and memory, a built-in library of
almost 200 standard words and terms
is included. The package compresses
and compiles the message file before
downloading it to the SER 260.
Messages may be printed on the
SER 260s built-in 24-column plain
paper printer or on an external printer
via any one of the serial or Conet
communication ports. Certain inputs
may be masked from specified ports,
so only some inputs are recorded on
particular printers.
System Configuration
Programming
SER 260s front-panel keypad with
interactive menu-driven software and
LCD is used to program the
configuration file which is then saved
in the master EEPROM. Changes can
be made on-line with no disruption to
point monitoring. The following
configuration information may be
programmed from the front panel:
Front-panel pro gram ming:
Date and Time
Clear history queue (log of events)
Enable or Disable field inputs
Set input sense selection
Set alarm time delays (into alarm
and return to normal, independently
from 1 to 65535 milliseconds)
Set input debounce filter (1 or 4 ms)
Assign Status Points
Assign Derived Inputs
Configure Serial Ports (computer or
printer)
Set Time Sync Inputs (50 or 60 Hz,
1 sec or 1 hour)
Set Periodic Report options
Set Midnight Report options.
Operator Controls
Operators have the following on-line
controls:
Circuit Test (full component test
without generating alarms)
Alarm Summary (prints out all points
currently in alarm)
Printer On/Off (suppresses printout
until turned on; events stored in
buffer temporarily)
History Print (LCD displays history
queue of events one by one). A
hardcopy can be obtained from
current display to end of queue if
required.
SUPPORT 260
SUPPORT 260 is the
PC/Compatible-based package which
enables the SER 260 to be
programmed entirely from the PC,
providing the user with a number of
high-level report generation functions.
Any report may be created using the
relational filtering options menu on the
events data base. For example, a
hardcopy of events on input No 231 for
the time period 04h25 to 04h40 or a
record of events on boiler No. 1 in the
10 minutes prior to shutdown, may be
obtained quickly and easily.

Omni-4000
Omni-4000 is a 4800 point PC-based Critical Events
Monitor which performs two main functions: 1) Alarm
Annunciation and 2) Sequential Events Recording. It
provides instant Fault Diagnosis and Fault Monitoring
capabilities, facilitating down-time savings and predictive
maintenance. Omni-4000 can be used to compliment an
SER 260 or System of SER 260s (up to 4800 points).
Alarm Reports
Up to 15 alarm reports can be customized by defining the
time period, groups, priorities and alarm states which must
be filtered for that particular report. The report names may
be customized to any description for quick identification. In
addition, 5 pre-defined system reports which list tag
descriptions, setup, shelved (inhibited) tags and general
system parameters, may be printed. All required reports
are added to the print queue with one keystroke and then
automatically routed to the printer if on line.
Analysis
Omni-4000 allows first line analysis to be done on the
database, histograms may be plotted for fault concentration
analysis. Viewing and selected filtering of data by time is
also catered for so that the latest data scan be used in fault
diagnostics. Data files can be exported to other statistical
analysis packages for longer term analysis and to take
advantage of commercially available statistical tools
available. Refer to Omni-4000 Data Sheet for more details

Ap pli ca tion 1: 100 point sys tem
In this application, an SER 260 system is used with all 100 points in the Master
Subrack, therefore requiring no Slaves. The Master is connected to a host PC
via the built-in Conet network. Only 4 x 32-channel input cards are used, with
26 spare inputs on card 4.
Ap pli ca tion 2: 10 000 point sys tem
In this application, 3 SER 260 systems are connected to a PC which polls all 3
for data. Due to the highly distributed nature of the field inputs, to keep the field
input wiring short, the Slave Subracks are split into multiple units on the same
address. 25 sub-racks (1 Master and 24 Slaves) are used in System 1.
Because there are only 7 Slave addresses available, some of these are split
into 2 and 3 sub-racks with the same digital address. Input cards in these
slave sub-racks are only plugged into permitted slots (input cards may not
occupy the same card slot in 2 different racks that have the same address).
The Slave Sub-Racks in systems 2 and 3 on the Conet network are not shown
(Dotted area). All inputs in these systems retain their 1ms resolution on input.
Up to 32 systems can be connected to 1 Conet network.
