WHATS HURTING HYPNOSIS?
The New Indian Express July 16, 2013
Express News Service
The absence of any accreditation in the country for hypnotherapy
is making it vulnerable to fake practitioners, said President of the
Hypnotique Circle of Madras, Muthiah Ramanathan. He was speaking
on the sidelines of a seminar held on the occasion of the 40th
anniversary of the organisation on Sunday.
The absence of any accreditation in the country for hypnotherapy
is making it vulnerable to fake practitioners, said President of the
Hypnotique Circle of Madras, Mr Muthiah Ramanathan. He was
speaking on the sidelines of a seminar held on the occasion of the
40th anniversary of the organisation on Sunday, 14 July 2013.
The Indian government does not recognise hypnotherapy while
the American Medical Academy and that in Britain has recognised
it as a medical tool since the 1950s. Owing to this situation people
without any expertise in the feld are able to practice here, he said.
Speaking about the various applications of hypnosis and
hypnotherapy, he said the acceptance of the feld is growing in the
city. Nowadays there are an increasing number of patients who
seek hypnosis and hypnotherapy. The problems can range anywhere
between fear of learning to drive to marital problems, he said.
Mr Muthiah pointed out that in about 50 per cent of the cases,
it is young couples who seek treatment. Compatibility issues after
marriage is the most frequent problems. This is true for both love and
arranged marriages.

In about 60 per cent of the cases, it is possible to bring some sort
of amicable understanding between the parties, he said. Experts also
pointed out that while young couples were the most frequent seekers
of help, there was also a growing number of couples who had been
living together for years and have divorce issues now. More and
more couples are coming up with issues of divorce after more than 15
years of living together. The common argument is that they have been
waiting for all those years to let their children settle down and that it
was now time to move on, says Major V V Narayanan, secretary of
the Hypnotique Circle.
Another bunch of people who commonly used this therapy are
students, especially school students who are on the road to writing
competitive examinations, said the experts

STRESSED YOUNGSTERS FLOCK TO HYPNOTHERAPISTS
Manish Raj, Times of India, July 14, 2013
CHENNAI: Youth of the city, especially students and IT
professionals, are focking to hypnotherapists for stress disorders.
In 2012, hypnotists provided succour to more than 15,000 people,
of whom 7,200 were students, a conference of the practitioners
said on Saturday.
-3-
Therapists said that till a few years ago, only a few came for de-
stress therapy and counselling, but now the 50 counsellors in the
city attend to around 600 students a month. They said counselling
was tailor made for each individual. Over a period of time, one is
equipped with skills to deal with stress, overcome fear and enhance
interpersonal skills, said Major V V Narayanan, secretary of the
Hypnotique Circle, Chennai.
Hypnotherapist Rajani Sree said a common problem found
among students was low self esteem, often a result of wrong
conditioning by parents or teachers. She cites the case of Rajeev*,
a student who found education stressful. He was an intelligent
student, but his creative energy was directionless. Through
therapy, I identifed that his problems were a result of faulty parenting.
Over three counselling sessions, he was brought out of his old
mindset and taught to enjoy his studies. He is a bright student now,
she said.
-4-
Hypnosis-therapy should not be confused with hypnosis in
isolation, said Narayanan, adding that people were now becoming
aware of the benefts of the therapy, which is scientifc and rooted
in principles of psychology. Through therapy, people are trained
to change, challenge and manage their habits, perception and
behaviour, he said.
Speaking about the technique of the therapy, Mr.Muthiah
Ramanathan, president of the organization, said behavioural
disorders and negative emotions had their root in the subconscious
mind. Hypnosis-therapy is the method to access an individuals
subconscious mind and identify the real cause of the problem.
Once the original factor that led to a disorder is identifed, positive
suggestions are given to the subconscious mind. The therapy equips
the individual to deal with a similar situation in future.
In a majority of cases, a person comes out of his old mindset
in one or two sessions but severe cases require more. While the
therapy is free up to two sessions, those requiring more are charged
a nominal fee, he said.
Students who are in their teens face several problems such
as dyslexia, failed relationships, physical or sexual abuse and
behavioural disorders such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
(OCD). Along with therapy, there are occasions when parents and
teachers are also counselled. It is only when parents and teachers
identify the skills of students and motivate them that they realise
their true potential, Sree said.
IT professionals in the city also approach the therapists,
with high levels of stress and lack of interpersonal skills.
Many of them, despite coming to the meetings, remain cocooned
and dont open up, which makes it diffcult to reach out, said Major
Narayanan. But once they open up, its just a matter of a few
sessions, he said.

FREUD FUNDAS
- By ANUSHA NARAIN
Courtesy: The Hindu dt 27 Sep 2013
He changed the way the world thought about everything. Here is
looking at the mind of Sigmund Freud on his 74th death anniversary
Where does a thought go when it is forgotten? It began with this
question, born in the mind of Sigmund Freud. He spent his life
answering this question (and its derivatives) and came up with
ideas weve been trying to forget since. After all who wants to know
what goes on up there? Who wants to know the truth behind all
that anger, jealousy, and fears; those strange sexual fxations and
bizarre dreams? Who wants to know the secret wishes that lurk in
the darkest recesses of the unconscious?
Apparently Freud did, and after long years of analysis, rumination
and cigar smoking, he saw the light and went on to thrust the burden
of all the castration anxiety, penis envy, deprivation complex, to
name a few, upon the blissfully ignorant humanity. And so, a cigar
was never again a cigar; it was a phallic symbol. A joke was a
very serious business (as Winston Churchill also averred); the
paranoid was never entirely mistaken; a slip of tongue, or the
Freudian slip as its now called, was to cause a reaction that will
ensure a subconsciously desired destiny, (as defned in the Urban
dictionary). Our dreams were a quagmire of symbols and a means
of wish fulfllment; the desires that lived in the unconscious, those
that couldnt be fulflled in civilised society because of their violent
or sexual nature. The mad man is the dreamer awake, Freud said.
Freud came along, reached way down below into our very core,
grabbed by the throat all the anxieties that we hid so lovingly in our
subconscious in those early years, and shoved them in our face.
His work was done, he died on September 23, 1939, and left us
with the awareness of all things uncomfortable.
But self-realisation is better than living in an illusion. Being
entirely honest with ones self is a good exercise, he said. So,
-6-
here we are today, all because of Freud, taking a long, brave look
at our muddled heads; analysing every feeling, every memory,
with no thought being too trivial or too weird; without resistance or
judgement walking along the royal road to the unconscious-the seat
of all self-knowledge and enlightenment.
The revelations so achieved, through techniques such as free
association and dream analysis, are ultimately meant to help us deal
with conficts (not eliminate). A man should not strive to eliminate
his complexes but to get into accord with them: they are legitimately
what directs his conduct in the world, said Freud. Knowing oneself
also consequently leads to accepting all shades of being human,
even the grey ones. Freud believed maturity was achieved when
one became tolerant of ambivalent feelings, which means, feelings
of love and hate can coexist. Dogs love their friends and bite their
enemies, quite unlike people, who are incapable of pure love and
always have to mix love and hate, he said.
Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, the author of Interpretation of
Dreams changed the way mankind looked at itself. He uncovered the
squeaky clean facade and revealed the real bag of complications that
we possibly could be, with sexual gratifcation and self-importance
being the two main motivators, with every habit being a substitute
for the one great habit, and of course the fact that the love for
our parents was peppered with a little bit of Oedipus or Electra
Complex. Freud was lambasted for his controversial theories, and
many questioned their universality. But all the criticism aside, there
is a lot to be learned from one of the greatest minds ever.
Buried under all the uncomfortable truths is Freuds gift of
hope: Out of your vulnerabilities will come your strength, One
day, in retrospect, the years of struggle will strike you as the most
beautiful, and There are no mistakes. So, dont beat yourself up.
And apparently, all forgotten thoughts fnd a place in the endless
unconscious.

THE GOLD TRADER
Long time ago, in China lived a famous mystical person name
Zun-Nun. A young man came to visit him and asked Teacher, I do
not understand why people like you dress in such a very simple way,
isnt in this era necessary to dress neatly,?
The mystical only smiled and took his ring from one of his fngers,
and said Young friend, I will answer your question, but frst do one
thing for me. Take this ring and go to the market across this street
and see if can you sell this for one chip of gold. Having looked at Zun-
Nuns dirty ring, the young man became doubtful. One chip of gold,
I am not sure this ring could be sold at that price.
Try frst, young man, who knows you might do it. The Young
man went to the market quickly. He offered the ring to the textile,
vegetable, meat, fsh traders, and the others. The fact was that no
body was willing to pay for a chip of Gold. He went back to Zun-Nuns
residence and reported Teacher, no body was brave to offer more
than one chip of silver.
With a wise smile Zun-Nun said, Now go to the Gold Shop at the
back of this street. Show this to the owner or to the gold trader. Dont
give your price just listen how much he will pay for this ring.
The Young man went to the shop and reported Teacher, the traders
in the market really do not know the value of this ring. The gold trader
offers this ring for one thousand chips of gold, and the value of this ring
was one thousands times from what the traders in the market offer.
Zun-Nun just smiled subtly and spoke softly, That was the answer
for your questions my friend, Someone cannot be valued only from
his dress The traders in the market give value like that. But not The
gold trader
Moral : All the criticism, snide remarks, caustic replies which we
get sometimes, are from the traders who do not recognize the gold in
us. So do not lose heart. Instead, search for the goldsmith who will
recognize your true worth and value you properly. Similarly do not get
fooled by the outer appearances. A brass may look like gold but is not
gold. Dig deep before forming an opinion or judging others

9 POWERFUL LIFE LESSONS FROM CONFUCIUS
Confucius was a Chinese thinker and social philosopher.. His
philosophy focused on issues of morality, both from a personal
and a governmental perspective. Confucius taught concerning the
correctness of social relationships, justice and equality. His teachings
became very prominent in China. Below are 9 Powerful Life Lessons
based on the philosophy of Confucius.
9 Powerful Life Lessons from Confucius:
1. Just Keep Going
It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.
If you keep going down the right path, you will eventually get
to your intended destination. The hard work is being consistent;
anybody can do right for a day. The person who succeeds is the
person who stays committed despite the circumstances.
2. Your Friends Matter
Never contract friendship with a man that is not better than
thyself.
Your friends are a prophecy of your future; where they are is
where youre headed. It would serve you well to fnd friends who
are going where you want to go.
3. Good Things Come With a Price
It is easy to hate and it is diffcult to love. This is how the whole
scheme of things works. All good things are diffcult to achieve; and
bad things are very easy to get.
This explains a lot! Its easy to hate, its easy to be negative, its
easy to make excuses. It is love, forgiveness, and greatness that
require a great heart, a great mind, and a great effort.
4. Sharpen Your Tools First
The expectations of life depend upon diligence; the mechanic
that would perfect his work must frst sharpen his tools.
-9-
Confucius said, Success depends upon previous preparation,
and without such preparation there is sure to be failure. Whatever
you are called to do, if you are to succeed, you must frst be prepared.
5. To be Wronged is Nothing
To be wronged is nothing unless you continue to remember it.
Dont sweat the small stuff; to be wronged is no great offense.
Dont let the wrongdoing of others ruin your day. Dont let theyre
negativity occupy your thoughts. To be wronged is nothing!
6. Consider the Consequences
When anger rises, think of the consequences.
Solomon said, He that is slow to anger is greater than the mighty.
Always remember to keep your temper in check and to consider
the consequences.
7. Make Adjustments
When it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached, dont adjust
the goals, adjust the action steps.
If its looking like youre not going to make your goals this year,
now would be a good time to adjust your plan. Dont accept failure
as an option, adjust your sails, and you will sail safely to your goal.
8. You Can Learn From Everyone
If I am walking with two other men, each of them will serve as
my teacher. I will pick out the good points of the one and imitate
them and the bad points of the other and correct them in myself.
You can and should learn from everyone, be it a crook or a saint.
Every life is a story flled with lessons ripe for the picking.
9. All or None
Wherever you go, go with all your heart.
Whatever you do, do it with everything, or dont do it at all. To
succeed in life requires your very best, give your very best, and you
will live without regrets.

OPRAH OFFERS MANUAL FOR LIFE AT LIFECLASS
An inside look at the personal development behind
Oprahs Lifeclass with Bishop TD Jakes
Shes the one-word mega hyphenate (media mogul-entrepreneur-
inspirational leader) and hes the larger-than-life Christian fgure
and best-selling author whos more than qualifed to share a stage
with her. Oprah and TD Jakes recently teamed up to tackle issues
of broken families and relationships in two new installments of
Oprahs Lifeclass. Fresh off her Emmy win for her Lifeclass work in
social TV experience, Oprah took the show to Dallas to join Bishop
TD Jakes at his MegaFest conference. It was ftting that MegaFest
attendees focked to the American Airlines Center to join Oprah
and the Bishop, since the crowd roared with applause, cheers and
the occasional Amen! that could rival any Dallas Mavericks game
usually held there.
The premise of Oprahs Lifeclass is simple: Oprah and her team
have taken every lesson, revelation and aha moment over the last
25 years, broken them down and added applicable tips and steps
with the help of relationship experts and coaches. As Bishop TD
Jakes says, Thats why Lifeclass is amazing. Life doesnt come
with a manual. Were all learning.
In an event reminiscent of a hands-on workshop more than a
taping of a TV show, Oprah would call on certain audience members
or Skype in participants who would share their family issues with
an open-minded Bishop Jakes. Promising not to judge, but only to
help, the healing and inspiration Jakes provided was also tempered
with humor. This isnt Judge Judy; this is Lifeclass! he cheered.
Without divulging specifc details and storylines (new episodes
will air on Sundays in September, only on the Oprah Winfrey
Network), weve compiled our top fve personal-development
takeaways from this life-altering Lifeclass.
-11-
1. Dont allow your personal bitterness to make you an unjust
judge. - Bishop TD Jakes. When it comes to failed marriages
and broken households, Bishop Jakes has seen, preached and
counseled on them all. If the marriage or relationship doesnt end up
working out, the worst thing you can do is to allow the experience
to cloud your better judgment, especially when it comes to any
children or additional family.
2. When you hold onto your history, you do it at the expense
of your destiny. - Bishop TD Jakes. This lesson, in particular,
was Oprahs favorite. Thats a quote for the ages! she remarked,
That made me want to cry. Bishop Jakes continues, If I held onto
all that happened to me in my childhood and in my life, I wouldnt
be standing here today. If you revisit the images and replay them,
you empower them and strengthen them. Dont give those bad
memories any more power over you than they already have.
3. You have to meet people where they are and love them at
the level they want to be loved, Oprah advises. The Bishop
added on with the analogy that some of us have ten gallon hearts,
but deal with or fall in love with people, who for one reason or
another, can only give pint-sized love. If one person cant fll your
ten gallon heart, supplement that space with other family, friends
or activities.
4. My problem with people [in troubled relationships] today
is that they give up so easily. They divorce themselves of the
chance to have a lifelong shot at happiness. Bishop TD Jakes
continues, We have followers on Twitter or friends on Facebook
who we pay so much attention to, yet we dont even know. Theres
all this phony, pretentious facade of pretend relationships. Why are
we so devoted to the synthetic and disengaged from the organic?
5. Dont just confront issues. If you have the strength to
be confrontational then have the wisdom to have confict
resolution, states Bishop TD Jakes. When it comes to confict
-12-
resolution, theres one rule of thumb that the Bishop advises you
to always include in diffcult conversations with loved ones: Attack
the issue and not the individual. Separate the behavior and the
problem from the person and that person will join you in solving
the problem.
With relationships healed and families on the path to restoration,
Oprahs last Lifeclass at MegaFest wraps up, and Winfrey herself
said goodbyes to the crowd as she echoed Jakes earlier statement,
This isnt Judge Judy! This is Lifeclass!.
HOW TO CONNECT WITH ANYONE
- By Scott Dinsmore
The 31 Habits of People Who Connect with Anyone
(Continued from Sep 13 Issue)
16. Pay attention: The easiest way to be interesting is to be
interested. Find excitement in what you can learn from others. Hear
what they say. Listen and learn about what matters to them. Not
so you can say something back as soon as possible, but so you
can get a window into their world. People want to tell their story.
Be the person excited to hear it.
17. Follow up & keep up: Keeping track makes this all the
easier. A phone call, lunch, email or casual introduction to someone
helpful. Any will do. Follow up with unique value, keep them front
of mind and keep yourself in the front of theirs.
18. See opportunity in others: Every new person is a chance
to connect and help, and has the possibility of being the person
youve been dying to meet. You wont know unless you say hi.
19. Believe in people: Know that most people are inherently
good and want to help as much as they want to be helped. They
want to make the meaningful connections as badly as you do. They
want to hear your story and they want to tell you theirs.
-13-
20. Find common ground: Everyone has something in
common see it as a fun challenge to fnd what it is. The faster
you can fnd shared ideas, beliefs and interests, the quicker you
can relate.
21. Remember names: Nothing feels better than hearing your
own name, especially from someone you just met. And Im not
good with names, does not fy. No one is good with names unless
they practice! This alone puts you on a whole new level.
22. Be the connector: Bring groups together. Host events.
Introduce friends who have similar interests. Make it your job to
bring the right people together. There is no more powerful service
you can provide.
23. Be the mentor as well as the mentee: There will always
be people above and below. Be the mentor for a few people
not quite at your level and fnd mentors to keep brining you up.
Embrace both roles. You cant have one without the other. Do
your part.
24. Show your passion: You must be interesting. The best
way to do this (aside from listening like crazy) is by embracing
your passions, working towards an idea or cause and having a
set of beliefs youre deeply excited about that you openly share
with others. No one likes talking to lemmings. Live and connect
with passion. This is the surest way to be someone worth talking
to and everyone is capable of it.
25. Lead an interesting life: Live a life worth hearing about
most importantly for you, but for those around you as well. Do
things you dont normally do. Just being in new surroundings will
cause you to interact with a new group of people without even
trying. The more things you do and try, the more things youll have
to talk about and the more fun youll have!
-14-
26. Tell stories: People connect on energy and emotion, not
facts and stats. Communicate with stories as often as possible
and encourage others to tell theirs. Know the fun stories of your
life and share them with others.
27. See friends not strangers: When you walk into a room,
see the new faces not as strangers but as friends you have yet to
meet. You see the world in a more similar way to others than you
probably realize especially if youre at the same event or a part
of the same communities. Approach accordingly.
28. Care about people: None of the above matters if you dont
actually care about the people around you. If you dont care about
the person being a part of your life, you likely wont do any of this
stuff. If were going to connect in a powerful way, we must reframe
the way we look at people. Enough said.
29. Show up (ideally in the physical world): Connections dont
happen in your house or offce. You must get out there, say hello
and reach out. This can start with emails and online connecting
but this is only the very beginning. Nothing makes a more powerful
impact than meeting in the fesh. Dont hide behind technology.
Get out of your offce and from behind the computer, work from a
coffee shop instead of your living room and be in the places where
other passionate people hang out.
30. Create coincidence: The craziest things tend to align
when you start to reach out, offer help and share your stories and
passions. The examples of random chance youll hear throughout
our How to Connect with Anyone course will blow your mind. This
is how I met Simon Sinek, Tim Ferriss, Keith Ferrazzi, Peter Thiel,
Gary Vaynerchuk and plenty more. The more time you spend
around others, the more it happens. Be in the right places and let
chance play its part.
31. Be unforgettable: When you embody these habits, standing
out becomes a given. Your existence becomes memorable.

HOW IS NORMA?
By Thamizharasan Karunakaran
A sweet grandmother telephoned St. Joseph s Hospital.
She timidly asked, Is it possible to speak to someone who can
tell me how a patient is doing? The operator said, Ill be glad to
help, dear. Whats the name and room number of the patient?
The grandmother in her weak, tremulous voice said, Norma
Findlay, Room 302. The operator replied, Let me put you on hold
while I check with the nurses station for that room.
After a few minutes, the operator returned to the phone and said,
I have good news. Her nurse just told me that Norma is doing well.
Her blood pressure is fne; her blood work just came back normal
and her physician, Dr. Cohen, has scheduled her to be discharged
tomorrow.
The grandmother said, Thank you. Thats wonderful. I was so
worried. God bless you for the good news. The operator replied,
Youre more than welcome. Is Norma your daughter?
The grandmother said, No, Im Norma Findlay in Room 302. No
one tells me anything.
You cannot do it on your own. Every successful person (no
matter how you defne it), has an army of passionate supporters
in their corner. Its on us to build that team.
Let this be your bible going forward. Print it out. Put it in a place
where youll constantly be reminded. Then watch the magic unfold.
Happy Connectedness !
