PROUD TO BE
Excerpt from the book Keeping the Promise
by Donna E. Elliott
On 21 January 1968,
my brother, SSGT Jerry
W. Elliott was declared
Missing-In-Action in Khe
Sanh, Vietnam. When
the 55th Joint Task
Force (JTF) investigated the loss site in
1999, his buddy, Mike
Teutschman and I were
present.
After interviewing
two local residents who had scavenged the
Old French Fort, the team presented me with
a charred section of rotor blade from Black Cat
#027. The blade had survived a B-40 rocket
attack, laid undiscovered in the red dirt of Khe
Sanh until found by a farmer, and then spent
years holding up the corner of a cow pen.
Jerry had left his position as doorgunner on a
different chopper to assist survivors from this
crashed and burning helicopter when he disappeared. I brought it back to America.
May 2000, found us in the Pentagon parking
lot with Run For The Wall, waiting to ride in
the Rolling Thunder parade and carry the rotor
blade in a pine box to the Wall.
Many notables mingled with the bikers, but
I never knew the name of the man I remember
the most. He stared at the blade for a long time
before he spoke. He was one of two survivors
from a chopper crash. The other crewmember
had managed to return to the crash and recover
a small piece of stainless steel from the helicopter, which he used to make two crosses. The
vet reached into his pants pocket and a small
piece of silver flashed in his palm. He explained
this cross was never out of his sight; he carried
it with him at all times as a reminder of the
friends he had lost. Tears welled up in his eyes

die that day; they were all such good men.
SSGT Jerry W. Elliott
Around noon, the lead bikes began to roll
out. As soon as the wheels stopped turning,
strong hands reached out to carry the heavy
wooden box to its final destination at Panel 35E
in an honor guard procession. One by one, the
riders touched Jerrys name with bowed heads
as a silent statement of respect. Overwhelmed,
I left the Wall.
Like a moth to a flame, I later returned.
While bending over the pine box, which now
overflowed with miscellaneous mementos, I lost
my balance and leaned into the Wall to break
my fall. Thats when I saw it. Tucked deep into
a corner of the pine box was the small silver
cross!
For reasons unknown, the Vietnam vet from
the parking lot had chosen to leave his talisman
at the Wall in remembrance of Jerry. His gift an
anonymous, selfless act, reminiscent of actions
Id heard combat vets share about their brother
soldiers on the battlefield.
I placed the cross on one end of the blade,
where it gleamed boldly. I hope my nameless
friend from the parking lot walked away from
the Wall that day with as much peace in his
heart as I felt at that moment.
Until they all come home

MY BACON, EGG, VIDALIA ONION, SWISS

CHEESEBURGER WITH AN EASY-OVER EGG ON TOP
*I have been making these since I was 10 y.o. Thought I
invented them, then saw it on some cooking show. Who
Knew?
1 Ground Beef Burger - however you like it; thick or thin, but
shape it the size to fit your bun and then push down gently in
the middle with your thumb so it will cook evenly.
4 Strips of Hickory-Smoked Bacon
1 X-Large Egg
2 Slices of Baby Swiss Cheese
5 Strips of Vidalia Onion, sauted golden brown
Now, you can grill your burger or fry it in a skillet,
and saut your onions up while frying burger and
pick them out and drain on paper towel. Put your cheese
on burger, add a little water to pan and cover with lid (keeps
moist & melts cheese fast), remove & drain on paper plate;
pile your onions on top, fry your egg in the grease, flip gently
and remove to a paper plate. Butter your buns and toast in
the oven. A toasted bun makes ANY burger better. Now just
build your burger and put the easy-over egg on top
and your favorite topping; mayo, ketchup, whatevva.
I break the yoke and let it run all down over the burger.
Woooeeee! damn, this is slap-ass good!
THE ABSOLUTE BEST BATTER FOR FRYING ANYTHING!
Compliments to: Michael Symon of The View - ABC (Handwritten while watching)
1/2 Cup of Cornstarch
1/2 Cup of All-Purpose Flour
1/2 tsp. Baking Powder
2 Tbls. of Old Bay Seasoning (spice aisle or often
by seafood display) Ask grocery clerk
1 tsp. Cayenne
Pinch of Salt
1/4 Cup of Pilsner Beer (will say on label)
1/4 Cup of Water
1/2 Cup of Vodka
This better is awesome for Vidalia Onion Rings!
* Always use Peanut Oil for frying. It just holds
temperature better and gives a good, clean taste.
Dont re-use oil. Always use fresh so your food doesnt taste
like what you last fried.

IT AINT SUMMER WITHOUT DOWN-HOME NANER

PUDDING
Banana Pudding: Mix in a cooled glass bowl
1 Box of Vanilla Pudding Mix
1/2 Cup of Whole Milk
1 Whole Can of Condensed Milk
1 Level tsp. of Nutmeg
1 Container of Frozen Whipped Topping
(If you want seriously better taste, make your
own whip cream with 2 Cups of Confectioners
Sugar to 1 Cup of Heavy Whipping Cream and 1 Tbl. of pure
Vanilla Extract. Just keep blending on High until stiff peaks
form and then stop or it will all turn back to liquid.) Tastes SO
much better though than the pre-made. And its so easy!
1 Box of Nilla Vanilla Wafer Cookies
4 Bananas; sliced into 1/4 inch rounds
Mix all ingredients together. Folding in the whipped cream
gently towards the end on low. Mix should be creamy, not
runny. In a larger glass serving bowl, place a layer of the
wafer cookies. Spread 1/4 of the pudding mix over the cookies. Lay 1/2 the banana slices over the pudding mix in a
single layer. Spread another 1/4 of the pudding mix over the
bananas. Repeat. Place any remaining cookies on top, but
break them up into halves, but cover completely.
Refrigerate at least 3 hours or overnight.
Great serving idea: Serve in big spoonfuls into very large but
squat heavy glasses or into
Mason Jars and add a scoop of high-quality Vanilla icecream for every great big spoonful of Nanner Pudding. This
is perfect for summer!
COOL & EASY WATERMELON FIZZIES
2 Cups of Watermelon; cubed
1 Ounce of Gin
2 Tbls. of Fresh Lime Juice
1/3 Cup of Ginger Ale
Full Lime Slices for Garnish
Puree the watermelon cubes & strain
Pour back into blender and add other ingredients
If want a stronger mix, add more gin, want it
lighter, add more Ginger Ale.
For kicks, scoop out some watermelon balls; freeze and add
to a chilled martini glass when serving up your mouth-watering Watermelon
Fizzies. These are fun and delicious!
WORK HARD. PLAY HARD. SUMMER FUN!

2 UP RIDING WITH A PASSENGER

Learning to ride with a passenger on a motorcycle is vital to making your motorcycle a regular part of
your life. It can be a little scary at first but, using these tips, can be as comfortable as riding solo.
Make sure your bike can handle the extra weight.
Trying to carry a 350 pound man on the back of your Honda Cub is a bad idea, but so is carrying any
full-size adult on a motorcycle without making sure its prepared for the job. The added weight will impact
acceleration, braking, and suspension. While you cant do much about the acceleration, you should
make sure your brakes are in good shape to help stop a heavier load, and that your suspension is set
up for additional weight. Passenger foot pegs are also a must.
Getting on the motorcycle.
Ask your passenger to wait until you tell them you are ready before they try to mount. Make sure the
passenger pegs are down and then instruct them to mount from the left, non-muffler side. Make sure the
motorcycle is completely upright and that your legs are braced to keep it that way before your passenger
gets on the bike. While it may seem more stable when on its kickstand, the bike will be harder to
straighten once the extra weight comes aboard.
Tighter is better.
Instruct your passenger to hold on to you tightly. If they have a loose grip, they will be more likely slam into you when stopping
and also feel like theyre going to fall off when you accelerate. Regardless of how you feel about this technique, be it an added
bonus or it makes you slightly uncomfortable, its better than feeling like your passenger could slip off at any moment.
Turning
Even slight movements from your passenger will impact how your bike feels when turning. Inexperienced passengers have the
tendency to lean the opposite direction youre turning, for fear of falling off. Before departing, instruct them to stay as straight
as possible while simply looking over your shoulder to the side you are turning toward. That tiny amount of extra weight to the
inside, plus the consistency in their movements, will give you all you need to adjust your steering inputs accordingly.
Stopping
Instruct your passenger to keep their feet on the foot pegs when you come to a stop. Your motorcycle is at its most vulnerable
when stopped, as gravity tugs it downwards without any gyroscopic forces pulling it forward and helping to keep you upright. Their
putting a foot down can unsettle the balance you have and tip you over. Also, at the end of your ride, ask them to wait to move until
you let them know you are ready. Then have them dismount the same way they got on toward the left, non-muffler side.
Additional Tips:
If you ride with passengers often, you may want to purchase passenger hand holds, either to wear or to attach to your
motorcycle.
Ask your passenger not to turn around or make any sudden movements
Avoid high speeds or dramatic lean angles
If your passenger is able to reach the tank, they should use it to brace themselves when stopping or slowing
Keep in mind your stopping distances greatly increases with additional weight, and stopping will require extra effort on the
controls
Agree on hand signals before you depart. One for, Pull over. Another for, Youre going too fast, slow down. As well as one
for, Im good, keep it up.
Drag your back brake to smooth out the ride at low speeds
As always, make sure anyone riding on a motorcycle is wearing safety gear that fits appropriately

MOTORCYCLE BILL AIMS TO BRING EQUAL TREATMENT IN SOUTH CAROLINA South Carolina Governor
Nikki Haley recently signed a Motorcycle Equal Access Bill
that mandates equal treatment toward motorcyclists across
the state in all public areas. This legislation, sponsored
by Rep. Todd Atwater (R-Lexington), amends the Code of
South Carolina to keep local law enforcement agencies from
denying access to motorcyclists on public highways, bridges,
parking garages and essentially any publicly funded areas.
A lot of local motorcycle groups supported this bill, many
feeling that law enforcement has not treated them right for a
long time and they say theyre ready for a change. Theres
few municipalities, in particular, that want to stop motorcycles from parking in publicly funded taxpayer areas, said
one ABATE spokesperson. If tax payers are paying for a
garage, then they should not be allowed to tell us we cant
park there. Under the bill, cities and counties have to make
reasonable accommodations for motorcycle parking in lots
and garages. All this bill is about is equal access, this is
making sure that when you go to any city in this state that if
you have a motorcycle you have a place to park, said the
governor who is also an ABATE member, adding; As long as
I have been in office, ABATE has beenmy friends, and thats

Justice Interim Committee on Wednesday, July 16. Critser,

who has worked in gang enforcement since 2008, said the
proliferation of gangs and gang members could be attributed
to multiple factors. Utah is an untouched state, meaning no
gang has claimed territory as its own. Also, law enforcement
in Utah is unaccustomed to dealing with outlaw motorcycle
gangs on a regular basis, he said. Its like a gold rush. Everybody is trying to get here and establish dominance in the
state so they can run a variety of their criminal activities and
make their money in the state, Critser testified to the committee. The state also is becoming increasingly attractive to
members of outlaw motorcycle clubs because Utah is largely
rural, said Rep. Paul Ray (R-Clearfield), pointing out that
a number of clubs have hosted runs in Utah, including one
where several members racked up citations for multiple violations in numerous counties en route to Weber County, and
By the time they got there, they just turned around and went
home. They didnt want to deal with it any more, Ray said.
Really, youve got to make it expensive and uncomfortable
for these guys and they wont want to stick around. While he
offered no details, Ray said he intends to introduce a gang
initiative during the 2015 legislative session.

The next time you purchase tires look for the number
they are sprayed with an oil-based film before they sit on

on the sidewall and make sure the tire is the right

the film is quickly ridden off after a couple of miles on the
street. This is why its always recommended to take it easy
on your tires when you first get them. However, even with
the tire film, there still is a slow deterioration process that
is taking place within the rubber compound itself. And
because of this, all tires are required by the DOT to be
stamped with a manufacture date. Very similar to a born on
date on a Budweiser bottle (DO NOT DRINK & RIDE). For
motorcycle and car tires, the date stamp shows the WEEK
and the YEAR the tire was produced. For instance, your tire
might have the stamp 1910 on it which would mean the
19th week in 2010. Heres a visual:
1910 = 19th week in 2010

This morning on Hwy. 12, I looked over to my left and

there was a woman in a brand new Cadillac doing 65 mph
with her face up next to her rear view mirror, putting on her
eyeliner. I looked away for a couple seconds...to continue
shaving; and when I looked back she was halfway over in
my lane, still working on that makeup. As a man, I dont
scare easily, but she scared me so much; I dropped my
electric shaver, which knocked the donut out of my other
hand. In all the confusion of trying to straighten out the car
using my knees against the steering wheel, it knocked
my cell phone away from my ear, which fell into the coffee
between my legs! splashed and burned Big Jim and the
Twins, ruined the damn phone, soaked my trousers, and
disconnected an important call.
Damn women drivers!

Ma was in the kitchen fiddlin around when she hollers

out....Pa! You need to go out and fix the outhouse! Pa replies, There aint nuthin wrong with the outhouse. Ma yells
back, Yes there is, now git out there and fix it. So......Pa

stickin my head in that hole! Ma says, Ya have to stick yur

his head in the hole, looks around and yells back, Ma!

Ma replies, Hurts, dont it?

Celibacy can be a choice in life, or a condition imposed

by unforeseen circumstances. While attending a Marriage
Weekend, my wife and I listened to the instructor declare,
It is essential that husbands and wives know the things
that are important to each other.. He then addressed the
men, Can you name and describe your wifes favorite
flower?
I leaned over, touched my wife gently, and whispered,
Gold Medal-All-Purpose, isnt it? And thus began my life
of celibacy.........

A pharmaceutical truck that was fully stocked with various

prescription medications was stolen today. The majority of
the inventory consisted of Viagara. The police have asked
the public to assist them by being on the lookout for a group
of hardened criminals.

Four guys go fishing. The conversation went this way:1st

guy: I had to promise my wife that I would paint every room
in the house next weekend to come fishing. 2nd guy: I had
to promise my wife that I would build her a new deck for
the pool. 3rd guy: I had to promise my wife that I would
remodel the kitchen for her. They realized that the fourth
guy has not said a word. So, whats your delio? Whatd
you have to promise? 4th guy: I just set my alarm for 5:00
am. When it went off, I shut off the alarm, gave the wife
a playful little slap on the ass and said: Fishing or Sex,
your choice? And she groggily replied, Be sure and
wear sun-block, honey.

A lawyer boarded an airplane in New Orleans with a box

of frozen crabs and asked a blonde flight attendant to take
care of them for him. She took the box and promised to
put it in the crews refrigerator. He advised her that he was
holding her personally responsible for them staying frozen,
mentioning in a very haughty manner that he was a lawyer,
and proceeded to rant at her about what would happen if
she let them thaw out. Needless to say, she was annoyed
by his behavior. Shortly before landing in New York , she
used the intercom to announce to the entire cabin, Would
the lawyer who gave me the crabs in New Orleans please
raise your hand? Not one hand went up, so she took them
home and ate them.
Two lessons here:
1. Many lawyers arent as smart as they think they are.
2. Many blondes arent as dumb as most folks think.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON RIDER RYAN
KERR HAS GREAT RESULTS
AT LAGUNA SECA
Thunder Roads sponsored AMA Pro Harley
Davidson Rider Ryan Kerr was excited about
traveling west for his first race at Mazda Raceway
in Laguna Seca, California on July 12th. Kerr
explains, I have never been to the California
track but experts rate the track as one of the
most challenging in the AMA Pro Racing Series.
Following my weekend; the experts are right and
the track put my abilities to the test!
Kerrs practice and qualify times improved with
every lap but a rookie mistake caused the young
rider to crash during the final laps of qualifying.
Fortunately his team went to work and had his
bike race ready. Kerr reflects on the weekend and
states, The weekend was full of ups and downs
but overall it was good. The race was a battle
and I am happy with my 6th place finish and even
more thrilled with my lap times. My times prove
that I can ride with the leaders and become a
top competitor in this series. I couldnt be more
excited for next weekend and my hometown race
at Mid Ohio Sports Car Course! Im hoping to see
a lot of my Thunder Roads family at the track;

The People Of Walmart

RIDING WHILE INTOXICATED: Im not sure what

Wild West Walmart you think youre at, but I highly
doubt they allow horses in their store. Can you get
a D.U.I. on a horse? I hope so.

THATS ELEVATION HOLMES: At what point

does someone convince themselves that others will be impressed with his 2 foot mohawk
and its totally worth his time and effort?

REDNECK WATERFALL: Look how glorious that skullet is. Magnificent. Ive heard of
flowing locks but a cascading waterfall? Thats
monumental brother.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU VERY MUCH:

Looks like Elviss man boobs are trying to
leave the building.

OODLES OF NOODLES: Get this summers hot

new hair style. Go to your stylists and tell em to
give you that cheap Ramen noodle doo. College
kids everywhere will love it.

DONT MIND IF I DO: Every time I venture

into the wild world of Walmart I feel like I need
a nap to recharge my batteries too. I just
happen to wait until I get home, but whatever
floats your boat.

THE BASE COAT: Just getting a quick bronze on

at Wallyworld, no big deal. Push those stomped out
cigarette butts out of the way and youve got yourself an
ideal place to relax, catch some rays and people watch.

ROLL ONE UP HOMIE: Im not sure if you accidentally got some TP stuck to your pants as you pulled
them up or if you actually have an entire roll stuffed
in the back there. That seems like a ton of TP!

THE PRODUCE PRINCESS: See that everybody, they even have Walmarts in a land far, far
away. Thats impressive geographical scouting. Is
there anywhere you dont reach, Walmart?

By Dennis Martin
Back in early July, Harley-Davidsons Project LiveWire, The Experience Tour began to
cross the country along Route 66. I was able
to get a close up look of the electric motorcycle labeled LiveWire in Kirkwood, MO
at Docs Harley-Davidson. This was one of
the early stops on the 30 stop tour. Keep in
mind that these electric motorcycles are not
for sale and this tour is to get feedback from
the riding public. The largest hurdle at this
point is in the technology of storing power in
batteries that are small and can charge rather
quickly. Once a leap in technology happens,
the market of electric vehicles will most
certainly take off. The current electric vehicle
batteries are big and heavy in order to have
a user friendly product. Whether or not an
electric vehicle is meant for you certainly
depends on how you intend to use it. Higher
rates of speed uses more power from the
battery, so an electric car on a highway doing
60mph may only go 200 miles before recharging. On the flip side of that, a city driver that
may only see speeds of 30mph will be able to
go about 350miles. Then there is the added
weight to the vehicle to take into account, as
well as the recharging time. As you can see
there are many variables thus this Project
LiveWire is a great way to collect information
from the consumers.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Jeff
Richlen, the Chief Engineer - New Product

Delivery, of the Harley-Davidson Motor Company. The 33 electric motorcycles on tour are demonstrators and were specifically built for the demonstration experience. The main focus is
getting the riders input of an electric motorcycle, so that if they
were to go to the market in the future, H-D wants to meet the
riders expectations of a great electric motorcycle. They could
have built a prototype, put it on display with ropes around it for
everyone to look at it, but thats not the Harley-Davidson way.
Since they are going to take the voice of the riders, they want
everyone to be able to touch it and sit on it to get a true experience.
Project LiveWire is certainly doing what they want it to do.
Everyone was able to make their own assessment by seeing,
touching and listening to the motorcycle. Simply go to project.
harley-davidson.com, so that everyones voice will be heard with
this customer-led product. When the LiveWire goes into production, the performance and specifications will be much different than these demonstrator models. Breakthroughs in technology happen all the time and Harley-Davidson will be prepared to
capitalize on the electric motorcycle market with an outstanding
ride. To find out when the tour is coming to your area, go to the
website project.harley-davidson.com. Some locations are now
allowing demo rides.

Below the Surfaces Driving Innovation Team established the first
official algae-fueled motorcycle speed
records during The Texas Mile land
speed event on March 24th, 2012.
Team leader Kristian Gustayson
reached 94.6 mph using a 50/50 blend
of biodiesel derived from algae and
cooking oil waste from the University
of California at San Diego (UCSD).

THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE 36

Fellow team member, Devin Chatterjie, reached 96.2 MPH on 100%

algae-derived Green Crude diesel fuel
supplied by Sapphire Energy Inc., one
of the worlds leaders in algae-based
oil crude production. Together, they
established the fastest and only known
records to date for an algae-fueled
motorcycle.
The Driving Innovation Team rode
a unique turbocharged, 800cc diesel
powered Track Motorcycle manufactured in Holland. The bike was shipped
from Holland to the US last fall courtesy of FedEx Express in a show of
support for the project. They rode five
times, registering 94.6, 95.1, 95.2,
95.6, and 96.2 MPH. Their next official
speed trial will be in El Mirage, Calif.,
on May 19th.
The Texas Mile organizers, racers,
and spectators were extremely supportive of our team during the speed
trials and I would really like to thank
them for the warm welcome and opportunity to put algae fuel to the test. I
am excited to work with them more in
the future, said Gustavson.
In a project entitled One Barrel for
Baja, Gustayson led a team of UCSD
students to make a portion of the
biofuel themselves under the supervision of Dr. B. Greg Mitchells Scripps
Photobiology Group, with assistance
from the San Diego Center for Algal
Biotechnology. The students grew and
harvested algae using a sponsored
Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) unit
supplied by World Water Works from
ponds at the Carbon Capture Corporations facility near the Salton Sea and
at a greenhouse facility on the universitys campus.
After the algae harvest, its biomass
was isolated and sent to Dr. Skip
Pomeroys Laboratory at UCSD. In
the laboratory, the lipids and tats were
then extracted and further converted
into usable diesel fuel by the Biofuels

Action and Awareness Network.

Gustavson, a recent graduate of
the Center for Marine Biodiversity and
Conservations MAS Program at the
Scripps Institution of Oceanography,
is a co-founder of Below the Surface,
a non-profit organization dedicated to
exploring waterways and educating the
public about issues pertaining to water.
He started the One Barrel for Baja
Project in order to synthesize enough
algal biodiesel to compete in various
speed trials and the grueling Baja 1000
race this fall (http://algae.ucsd.edu/

to pollution and believes that biofuels
from algae can help reduce run-off going into Americas waterways.

GOOD FOR YOU

BEDTIME EATS

We all know the old adage that its not

good to eat right before going to bed. If
youre like me & cant fall asleep if youve
got the hungrys, the best thing is to grab
a little something. The following are the
best somethings to eat before catching
your zs:

Greek Yogurt - Greek yogurt has long been

heralded as a perfect snack, and trust us,
its perfect for right before bedtime. Greek
yogurt has a lot of calcium and protein,
and a small amount of it fills you up. You
can even add some honey or maple syrup
to sweeten things up a bit.

Milk - If youre
falling asleep
on your feet
and you dont
have time to
get a snack
for yourself,
at least gulp
down a glass of
milk. Calcium
is effective
in stress
reduction and
stabilization of nerve fibers, including
those in the brain.

Nuts - Besides being filling and incredibly

delicious, nuts have tryptophan, that
amino acid that sends you into a food
coma after Thanksgiving dinner. Trytophan
converts to serotonin and melatonin, the
brains natural relaxation chemicals.
Edamame - It may seem unorthodox, but
the natural estrogen-like components in
lightly salted edamame can combat the
restlessness that plagues many people in
sleep. Eat a bowl while reading before bed,
and enjoy your dreamless sleep.

Crackers & Peanut Butter - People usually

pick carbs if they decide to eat anything
before they go to bed, but the issue with
simple carbs is that they can cause a sugar
crash and wake you up in the middle of
the night. So go with whole wheat crackers
to fill you up & spread on your favorite
brand of peanut butter for the added
benefit of protein.
String Cheese
- Not only is
string cheese
absolutely
delicious and
fun to eat,
but it also
provides lean
protein, which
will leave you
calm and less
frazzled while
keeping your blood sugar on an even keel
throughout the night.

Raw Vegetables - You might not find baby

carrots, red peppers, and cucumbers all
that appealing, especially right before bed,
but drizzle some balsamic vinegar on them
and youll be singing a different tune.
Cherries - Scientists arent entirely sure
why, but cherries, particularly tart cherries,
can boost the bodys supply of melatonin,
which can help people with insomnia.
Having a serving of fresh, frozen or dried
cherries before bedtime cant hurt.

Chamomile Tea - Obviously you want to

avoid any and all caffeine before bedtime,
but some decaffeinated teas can sooth you
and relax your system. Hot liquids send a

How I Spent My Winter Vacation

(Part 3)

By Joe Sparrow
Note: The first two parts ran in the June and July
issues of Thunder Roads. If you missed them, you can
find them online at www.thunderroadsmo.com. Part1
tells of Joes initial trip to Viet Nam and the bike he
bought, part 2 tells more about his tour of the country
with Kevin Beanre.
The best part of the trip was going over there, buying a small motorcycle and taking that street bike
through things it was not designed to do. In deep
rivers I drowned the bike several times, crashed it
several times. I had the most fun of my life doing that.
There were horrible, horrible roads, pouring rain, not
knowing if we would find a room at night. Never really
knowing where the next city was. I only camped one
night and that was a great experience with people
I didnt even know. I met them just riding down the
road, I passed them, they passed me and we would
stop and talk. After passing back and forth several
more times we stopped for the night and camped.
Gasoline was about $5 per gallon, they sell it by the
liter so that s the converted price. You can find gas
everywhere, one time I had to lay the bike totally over
to get the gas to the petcock which took me another

THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE 40

mile up the road where somebody was selling gas.

They sell it on the side of the road with small visible
gas pumps. The gas pumps up into a glass container
where you can see how many liters you are putting
in your motorcycle. People would also sell gas out of
1-liter soda bottles and there were regular gas stations
everywhere. My bike had a speedometer that actually
worked (most of them are broken); I would guess I got
about 75 miles per gallon. The gas was 92 octane, it
was good gas.
I worked off Wi-Fi and I didnt make phone calls at
all. I had an international plan but didnt use it. When
we got rooms at night, we asked if they had Wi-Fi and
generally, they did. If they didnt know what we talking
about, they didnt have it and we would go to a different hotel. Anytime the Wi-Fi needed a password it was
usually 12345678, I used that several times. Anywhere
I stopped at cafes or hotels they were all willing to
give me the Wi-Fi code.
I put the equivalent of 3,300 miles on the 100 cc bike
in two months to the day. That would be like going
from coast to coast in the US. When I left to return
home, I donated the bike to a needy family.
To follow Kevin Beanre is unbelievable, he has an
uncanny knack for directions. He found stuff I dont
think normal people could find. We were coming
across Laos heading back to Viet Nam, we missed
a dirt road we wanted to take. But we ended up on a
highway which was another dirt road, we went over
7 or 8 river crossings and drowned the bikes several
times, crashed the bikes several times which was just
unbelievable fun. It is hard to relate what an experience it was
There were a lot of caves over there that surprised
me. The worlds largest cave was discovered there
about 8 years ago and they did a whole National Geographic story on it. To take a guided trip through that
cave is over $3000 and the shortest trip is six days,
that how big that cave is.
We ate in a lot of varied places, we didnt go anywhere fancy, I just wanted to go where the locals eat.
They dont give the meat any growth hormones, the
vegetables come right out of the fields nearby. Ive

never been a liver eater so I did not have that over

there and there was some strong tasting fish that I
didnt care for, but everything else was very good.
We had a lot of noodles and rice. You couldnt tell
what kind of meat it was and the people were not able
to communicate what it was very well. If the street
vendor had five kinds of meet that were putting on
top of noodles, you could just point to which one you
wanted. Other times you would make the motion for
eat food and they would give you whatever they had,
there were no choices. I really enjoyed the food there
and they spice the food up. They can take horrible
cuts of meat and make it taste good. In Ho Chi Min
City, they had Pizza Hut and Kentucky Fried Chicken,
but the chicken at KFC was not like in the US. It was
broiled and served with rice, it was fresh chicken, they
dont use frozen chicken or anything with preservatives added to it.
There were a number of people I met over there that
just went by themselves and never had a motorcycle
before, bought a used bike and learned how to ride
over there which is amazing to me. They would meet
other foreigners over there, start riding together in
groups, and meet other people. They were mostly
young people who wanted to the other side of the
world and have an adventure. I still keep in contact

with some of the people I met there. Traveling with

Beanre was interesting, he could make a friend in a
fistfight. He was easy to travel with; we would take off
on a footpath or dirt road or anything if he thought he
could get a good vantage point for a picture we would
take. He wasnt afraid to go anywhere, do anything; he
would try anything that sounded like fun.
The worst part was the fight over there and the flight
back; Im not good with foreign airplane terminals.
The scariest part of the whole trip was trying to find
my connecting flight in a strange airport, but I have
always been that way.
If I did it again, Id do more planning. I saw some
beautiful places and met some great people, if I knew
ahead of time about the great caves and some of
the waterfalls. I plan to visit. A little bit of research
wouldnt hurt, but we found some unbelievable sights
you wouldnt find with research, so we got lucky there.
I would absolutely recommend this trip to others. If
you want to do it on the cheap, it is there. If you want
nice stuff, they have it also. The cheapest room I got
was under $4 and the most expensive room I got was
$198. They have resorts there that will rival any five
star resorts. That same $198 room would cost about
$500 in the US. The total trip cost of the trip, I paid
continued next page
THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE 41

$1300 for the one way trip there with two days notice and $800 coming home with two weeks notice. With enough advance notice, you
could probably get a round trip ticket for around $1000. If you sent
$2000 over there in two months, you would be having a good time. I
brought $3000 with me and I came home with $800. You could retire
over there very easily. The food is very cheap and there is nothing
processed over there, everything is as fresh as it comes. This winter
I would like to go back to northern Viet Nam, we didnt make it all the
way to Hanoi, because we werent prepared for the cooler temperatures through the mountains. I know what to expect now and Id be
more than happy if anyone wants to go along with me.

WHERE DID THAT COME FROM?

Have you ever thought about the expressions that people use (you know you use some of them too) and wonder where they came from? So did we
Waking Up on the Wrong Side of the Bed
Meaning: Waking up in a bad mood
History: The left side of the body or anything having to do with the left was often associated considered sinister. To ward off evil, innkeepers made sure
the left side of the bed was pushed against a wall, so guests had no other option but to get up on the right side of the bed.
