For this week, you will attempt a CSWA practice exam. It contains 5 questions which are similar to what you might expect in the actual exam and you have 2 hours to complete it! This document aims to help you prepare for your exam and can be used as reference for your actual exam in the coming weeks. The 5 questions include drafting competencies, 2 part modeling questions and 2 assembly modeling questions. Your 3 hour CSWA exam is out of 240 and has 14 questions: 3 on drafting competencies, 8 on part modeling and 4 on assembly modeling.
Question 1: Drafting Competencies There are a range of questions in the real exam and my suggestion is that you revise the different types of drawing techniques in SolidWorks. This includes Aligned Section, Detail, Section, Broken-out Section, Projected etc. If you are having trouble figuring out which view type the question is asking, simply create a tube in SolidWorks and create a drawing from the part. You can then use trial and error to work out which view the question is wanting! Another option is to use the SolidWorks search feature in the top right corner of the screen to search the different multiple choice options presented and see which one is correct. Remember however that these questions are only worth 5 points each so dont get bogged down during the real exam!
Question 2: Part Modeling In reality, the exam uses several questions to finish with a complex part whereas this practice is simply 1 question to provide good practice. I would advise that you start with the side view (see the figure on the right) and simply draw this then use a single extrude to create the basic part. From there I would simply make 1 extruded cut at a time to gain the finished product. Important: I suggest that you use design tables to make changing your model quick. You will see that the large isometric picture has A, B and C. These change in each question thus changing the shape and mass of your model. If you click insert navigate to tables then design table you can create parametics to save time. Select the correct dimensions and you will be able to change these each time.
Question 3: Part Modeling This question is really basic if you made the design tables as suggested above! Simply click the third tab on your property manager and open the design table. In a new row add the new required values as per the question and click rebuild! Youve now completed this question.
Question 4: Assembly modeling In the exam, they give you the assembly and for the amount of marks given for these questions, they are pretty easy. You have heaps of time, so take care when creating this assembly. Similar to your tutorial you were required to start your assembly at the origin so that your center of mass is correct! Make sure of this otherwise you will get 0 for these questions!!! Start with the left bracket and just work your way along. The actual exam has a slightly more complex assembly, but follows exactly the same principles as this question. The hardest part of this question is picking the right edges or faces to create the angle. I would suggest selecting the edges as I find it easier to visualize than the faces but thats a personal preference.
Question 5: Assembly Modeling Similar to the part modeling in that only minor changes are necessary. It simply requires you to change the angle to gain a different center of mass. This should be pretty straight forward to complete and is worth 30 marks in the actual exam so make sure you are correct!
Good luck with the practice exam and take your time!
