Skills and Qualities

Communication: In my role working for a major insurance company, I am responsible for
dealing with customers making a claim over the telephone. Often there is a lot of information
that I need to source from the customer to ensure I have sufficient information to process
their claim. Through this experience, I have learnt to listen very carefully and use a variety of
question styles. I have learned that this strategy helps to build rapport with my customers.

Teamwork: Working for the marketing team for a solar racing car project, I have regularly
needed to attend team meetings. As part of this experience, I have participated actively in
the meetings and learned the importance of building rapport with my fellow team members. I
made sure there was acknowledgement that we all came from different disciplines, therefore
had different levels and types of expertise to offer. My contribution to the team meant that
we were all able to work together to attract a new sponsor for the racing team.

Problem Solving and Analytical: As part of my engineering studies I have been working on
a thesis, analysing the soil composition and calculating the earth pressure using specific
equations. I have read and analysed a wide range of national and international research
papers to help me draw conclusions about my own data. Consequently, I feel that I now have
the information I require to successfully address my thesis research question.

Project Management: Throughout my industrial training placement for an engineering
consultancy firm I worked on a number of projects. For each project, I created a project plan
so that I could monitor the time frame and costs associated with each. I needed to organise
equipment and contractors ahead of time so that all would go to plan when we undertook the
site visits. From this experience, I learned the importance on conducting regular review
meetings with all key players to assess the progress of projects.
