INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES

There are TWO Sections in this paper: Section A and Section B.

Section A consists of 2 questions. Answer ONE question from Section A.

Section B consists of 5 questions. Answer THREE questions from Section B.

Answer 4 questions in all.

Use separate answer books for EACH Section.

All questions carry EQUAL marks.

Figs Q1, Q2, Q3, Q5 and Table Q4 are attached.

A list of equations, with the usual notations, is provided.

SECTION A

Answer ONE question from this Section.

Use separate answer books for EACH Section.

Question 1

(a) Fig Q1 shows a compound pendulum consisting of a concentrated bob of
mass 10 kg attached to the lower end of a thin uniform rod 1.25 m long, of
mass 7 kg, and suspended from a knife edge 100 mm below the upper end of
the rod.

Working from first principles, determine its time of free swing. [8 marks]

(b) The pendulum is now subjected to a damping torque which is proportional to
its angular velocity, and it is found that the angle of swing diminishes to one-
eigth of its initial value after one complete double swing.

Determine the time of the damped swing and the magnitude of the damping
torque when the angular velocity is 1 rad/s. [12 marks]

Question 2

Fig Q2 shows a uniform rigid slender bar AB of length 2a and mass 50 kg, supported
by a spring at each end. The stiffness of each spring is 90 kN/m and the bar is
horizontal in the position of static equilibrium.

A vertical harmonic exciting force P = P0 sin pt is applied to the bar at a distance
a/10 from the centre of mass of the bar.

(i) Write down the equations of linear and angular motion of the bar.
[8 marks]

(ii) Determine the amplitudes of A and B if the amplitude of the exciting force is
65 N at a frequency of 17.5 Hz. [12 marks]

Neglect damping and consider small amplitudes of oscillation for the steady
- state forced vibrations only.

SECTION B

Answer THREE questions from this Section.

Use separate answer books for EACH Section.

Question 3

(a) With reference to stress concentration, state the most prevalent cause of
failure of components.
[3 marks]

(b) State THREE practical cases due to the above cause. [3 marks]

(c) A shaft is stepped from 48 mm diameter to 40 mm diameter through a fillet of
2.4 mm radius. A gear wheel is keyed to the larger diameter of the shaft and
the radii at the internal corners of the keyway are each 1.5 mm.

Using data from Fig Q3 determine the maximum torque that can be
transmitted if the steel has a shear stress limit of 200 MN/m
2
.
[14 marks]

Question 4

(a) State the factor which account for the greatest number of failures of contacting
surfaces. [2 marks]

(b) A gear has 150 teeth on a pitch circle diameter of 200 mm and meshes with a
second gear of 200 teeth. Both gears have a common face-width of 200 mm.

The two gears transmit a torque of 250 Nm

Determine the maximum compressive stress set up.
[9 marks]

E = 208 GN/m
2
and =0.3 for both gears.

(c) Determine the change in this value if the spur gear wheels are replaced by
helical gears of 17
1
/2
0
pressure angle and 30
0
helix angle.
[9 marks]

Question 5

(a) State the conditions under which fatigue tests are usually carried out.
[2 marks]

(b) The fatigue life of a component as determined at a particular stress level is a
very variable quantity.

State THREE causes for this observation. [3 marks]

(c) A mild steel shaft has a pulley mounted at each end and is supported
symmetrically in between two bearing housings. When rotating under load the
shaft will be subjected to a cyclic bending moment of 1.2 kNm.

Using a factor of safety of 2 and the data in Fig Q5, determine a suitable
diameter for the shaft for infinite fatigue life. [15 marks]

Question 6

(a) State the conditions under which creep tests are usually carried out.
[2 marks]

(b) State THREE engineering situations where creep must be taken into account.
[3 marks]

(c) The secondary creep rate in many metals may be represented by the equation

n
and the stress relaxation by the equation ( ) t 1 n
