180 County Road PPO, Ishpeming, Michigan 49849 / Rev. David Johnson, Pastor Church (906) 486-9083, Parsonage (906) 204-2401, faithlutheran@faithinishpeming.com I cant assume what her mindset was when she took the picture and posted it on the internet for all of the world to see, but it made me question, are certain events in the history of this world and our lives simply meant to be forgotten? As time progresses, does the impact and weight of such things decrease over time? Is there going to be a time when people visit a place where so much evil took place and run and laugh as if that tragedy had never taken place? And if so, what does that mean? For me, thats a scary thought; that such an act could be forgotten; that such an impact on our world could be reduced to just an event people talk about without evoking any feelings whatsoever. This made me think back to my experience at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. As part of our experience there, we made a trip to the mass grave that was dug in order to bury those Native Americans that were killed at the massacre of Wounded Knee. I will tell you that in our group there wasnt a single smile. For some tears were shed and most were in shock that such a tragedy could take place. Not only that, but there was an air about that place and a weight that you couldnt shake. Can such events when given enough time lose their effect? And if so, what does that mean for us as a people. Its been said that those who repeat the past are doomed to repeat it. If this disregard becomes the norm, arent we in a sense forgetting what has happened and taken place in the past?
1 Corinthians 11:23-26: 23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me. 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lords death until he comes. I ran across a story today about a teenage girl who was able to finally make a trip on her own to Auschwitz. While she was there she snapped a picture of herself in front of some of the buildings of this infamous concentration camp smiling. Yes, literally smiling while in a place that represented the torture and death of so many people. Smiling, as she stood on the very ground that people experienced some of the worst atrocities imaginable. Smiling, as she stood in a place where not just families but peoples very identities and lives were stolen from them never to be returned. I was floored by what this picture represented. Did she not realize the full weight and gravity of what had actually happened there, did she not experience the same shock and horror of the living conditions that people were forced to live and die in, or was there something more behind the smile? 2
This is why the words spoken during communion are so important. Even Jesus says it himself, Do this in remembrance of me. We are to remember. Not just the crucifixion or the pain that Jesus suffered, but we are to remember the grace that we receive each and every day because of such an act of sacrifice. We are to remember what it is like to really know that God loves you just as you are and gave His life on the cross for you; to remember what it is like to hear and know that you are forgiven. This is what we are to remember! Even Luther emphasizes this what is the big deal about communion? Being reminded that the body and blood was given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sin. I cant emphasize that FOR YOU enough. So what happens if we fail to remember this? By the grace of God we will never find out.
