Enriching the lives of our members since 1945
The Vision
Editor: Melanie Greenberg
President!s Message: Carole Kainen
Another New Year is upon us, bringing with it a time of
reflection and change. As I look back on the past year, both in my
family and on a global level, I consider the way certain events have
changed my life. Some events have brought great sadness, and
some have brought great joy. My small corner of the world includes
my family, friends, synagogue, and many other people whose paths I
cross each day for various reasons. Some major events this year for
me have been my sons Bar Mitzvah and my daughters college
graduation, two happy occurrences. When I think about the bigger
picture, the bigger world, over the last year, there is much more to
consider.
The recent problems with guns in our country sadden me.
Mental illness and the homeless population also upset me. We hear
every day about natural disasters, third world poverty and immigrants
coming to the United States to escape crime-ridden nations, corrupt
governments and difficult living situations. I see the issues Israel is
dealing with daily, with rockets flying overhead and unstable
relationships with the countries surrounding it. I feel renewed hope
each time our synagogue, my friends, and my family work with other
organizations to do Tikun Olam. This past year, Womens League
assembled Mishloach Manot baskets for the home-bound, to share
the mitzvah of Purim. And at our upcoming events, Womens League
will be helping to combat human trafficking by collecting toiletries for
women in need. As I think of all the amazing things we can
accomplish, I see the good in people and their actions.
Its important to do our best to stay informed and help however
we can. We are blessed to live here in this country and to be able to
make choices. We can be a support to Israel. We can help those who
need it in our country and other countries also. We all have busy
lives, and it can be easy to just stay in your own world and not get
involved. Try to stretch yourself a little each day. There are ways to
help make things better in the world. Set a goal and try to do one
thing to help others. It doesnt have to be a big deal. Sometimes its
just a smile or a kind word that makes someone feel better. You may
never know how you can impact someones life with just a small
action. Sometimes its writing a letter or speaking your mind to stand
up for something that you believe in. It might not be the most popular
opinion, but its important to stand up, communicate, be active. Talk
to your children and teach them about the important topics in the
world. They will have to deal with these issues someday too. We can
teach them with our words and our actions how to help others and
make the world a better place. We have to take time to take care of
ourselves and our families (our small worlds), but its just as important
to reach out of our small circle and help others.
Its important to stay informed and stay involved. The world
needs us to put ourselves out there as women, and as Jews. We as
women have great insights and great power to make our world a
better place, and Womens League can help us focus our efforts. I
look forward to doing my part, dont you?

Program VP: Elaine Schnee
Welcome to a New Year of programming at Womens
League of TBS. Weve planned for numerous and exciting
programs throughout the year beginning with both a family and an
adult program for Sukkot. Last years Sukkah Hop brought 39
people together in an evening that began with Havdalah and
appetizers, then moved on to the next course that was plentiful
and delicious, topped off with a tasty dessert buffet. Sukkah Family
Game Night attracted over 30 families. Being so popular, both
programs will be held once again, on Saturday evening, October
11
th
.
The Sukkah Hop will begin at 7:00 pm with Havdalah and
Appetizers at the home of Melanie and Gene Greenberg. The
Main Course will take place at Lillian and Mike Radomskys and
Dessert will be served at the home of Rabbi Elaine Schnee and
Harvey Gitel. The cost is $20 per person. We are limited to the
first 35 adults, after which you will be placed on a waiting list. If
you are interested, RSVP to me at 702-778-1071 or
ravmom@schnee.com by September 22
nd
.
Please write checks to WLTBS with Sukkah Hop in the
memo line and send to TBS (10700 Havenwood Lane, LV,NV
89135). attn. Elaine. Details about the Sukkah Family Game Night
will be sent out soon.
Also planned for this year will be a blow-out Hanukkah
event in December, Dinner With Friends in January, and a Purim
Family event in March. Please watch for details.
We are making plans to begin a Torah reading class once
the High Holy Days are over. I will be teaching the class. Besides
being interested in learning how to read the Torah, to participate
you must be able to read Hebrew. Please RSVP to me at
702-778-1071 ravmom@schnee.com to let me know if you are
interested.
Some of our programs will be educational and informative,
some will be related to holidays, some will be for fund-raising,
some will be for fun, but all will be enjoyable. The best way to
make this happen is for each of you to be a part of our programs
whether its to volunteer to chair, to help out, or to attend. Please
join us to make this year gratifying and entertaining.
Now that my daughter Sarah has gone back to
Minnesota and all the excitement and craziness that
comes with arranging and having a wedding is over, I
can once again return to my other passion, which is
Womens League.
It is said that two heads are better than one. I
am confident this will hold true again as I look forward
to working with Gina Retke as Co-Vice Presidents of
Ways & Means for WLTBS.
Our first project, with the New Year just around
the corner, is our exquisite New Year Greeting Card.
This is when you get the opportunity to wish all your
friends and Temple family a Happy New Year. Just fill
out the form, send in your check or credit card info and
we will take care of the rest. If you dont have the form,
just drop a check off at TBS made out to WLTBS and
memo NYGC. Call me if you have any questions at
702-429-0888. Some of you have already responded
and I thank you for that. If not, please get your forms in
ASAP and lets make this our best fundraiser yet!
Also, save the date for Saturday night, October
11th, when we will be having not one, but TWO events.
Our famous Sukkah Hop and our fantastic Family
Game Night in the Sukkah will be a night to remember-
so mark your calendar now!

As a delegate to the International WLCJ 2014 Convention,
I traveled to Whippany, NJ, where for four days I met with hundreds
and hundreds of WL members from across the country, Mexico and
Canada, saw "old" friends, learned, was moved and energized,
grateful to be a WL member and proud to represent WLTBS.
This was not my first experience attending Convention and
perhaps not my last, but this one was specialI had the distinct
honor of being recognized as a Board member of the International
Board of Directors and representing our Region, Pacific Southwest,
which includes, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico and Southern
California. If that was not enough, I had the privilege of accepting
the coveted Jewels in the Crown award, Emerald level, received by
only a handful of sisterhoods. It requires fulfilling a long list of
criteria and thanks to Kim Memar who did the paperwork, WE
WON!!!
The Convention is one of those life changing moments
when you understand that the work we do on a daily basis to make
our WL strong and vibrant is also being done by countless other
women, all trying to figure it outit is good to be among like-
minded friends. The workshops were impressive but to see
Chancellor Arnold Eisen of the Jewish Theological Seminary in N.Y.
engage in a dialogue with Rabbi Bradley Artson from the Ziegler
School of Rabbinic Studies at AJU in L.A., the leaders of the
educational institutions representing the Conservative Movement
was indeed an opportunity and honor. The next Convention will be
in three yearsMake your plans now. You won't be sorry.
The Torah Fund campaign for 2014-15 is once again,
Mishpachah. This is extraordinary news and the first
time ever the same theme has been used twice in a
row. While the pin, a beautiful tree of life design, will
be different, there is so much wonderful and pertinent
information to explore and share that WLCJ decided it
was well worth our while to do just that. As you know,
this is the only fundraiser mandated by WLCJit is
that important! When you support TF, you help to
guarantee that there will be Conservative clergy,
educators and lay leaders to lead our children and us
into the next generation.
Please support the 2014-15 Torah Fund Campaign
Your TF dollars are appreciated and needed.
Call and we will make sure you have a beautiful new
pin to wear for the New Year.

L"Dor V"Dor, a program for homebound and
facility bound seniors, is beginning it"s 14th
year at TBS. We are in need of additional
volunteers. We need people to help set up
tables and serve, help our guests on and off
the buses and be a friendly face as they
arrive. If you can spare a Tuesday morning
only 5 times a year, please contact
Melanie Greenberg at 702-768-0936 or email
ldorvdortbs@gmail.com for more information.
We need strong men as well,
if any husbands are interested!
This is a very rewarding
mitzvah.
