Sermons from 1828 to 1860 by William Cunningham, Still Waters Revival Books 4710-37A Ave. Edmonton , AB Canada T6L 3T5 hb. 416 pp.
These twenty-eight sermons from the pen of Dr. William Cunningham are each theological honeycombs dripping with an evangelistic love for the Lord Jesus. Cunningham is probably best known for his theological lectures. However such knowledge should not deter the reader from purchasing this volume. Dr. Cunningham approaches each passage with a pastor's heart. He does not take the reader down various theological roads of thought pointing out theological errors. Instead he opens up the text in a simple Scriptural manner. For example in his sermon entitled How to Estimate Repentance (Luke 15: 10) he sets forth his aim in his introduction: "We shall attempt first to explain the true Nature and Character of that event or transaction which is described in the text the repentance of a sinner; and then consider, in the second place, what are the feelings with which this event is or ought to be viewed." (p.20) Having set out the path that is to be covered, he takes the reader along that trail of thought.

Three new research enhancing fea- tures of the MASTER BIBLE 3.0 up- grade include INDEX, TOOLS, and NOTES. The INDEX feature is helpful for storing research on verses. For instance, you might Search for the word kingdom. Then you might want to reduce the field to verses containing the word kingdom and either God or heaven. This may be called up at a later time for some specific research, saving you the trouble of doing all the same Searching over again. The NOTE feature allows you to attach notes either to Bible verses or to specific words for permanent refer- ence. And you will not forget where you have notes attached, because MASTER BIBLE has a List key, which displays a list of all the notes you have created. This is an extremely helpful feature forthe serious student of Scrip- ture. It is like writing notes in the margins of your Bible, but not being fearful of running out of space! Also you can easily change or remove your notes, if you discover some error. The TOOLS feature allows you to access any modules you have pur- chased with MASTER BIBLE. I have the Hebrew-Aramaic and Greek Trans- literated Dictionaries, which include Strong's numbering system and are based on the Hebrew Brown- D1iver-Briggs Lexicon and the Greek Abbott-Smith Lexicon. This module allows you to discover the original word and definition behind any trans- lated word. You may also search for Hebrew and Greek words by use of the Strong's numbering system or by typ- ing in the English word for which there may be several Hebrew or Greek words. These may also be saved to a file for future reference or export to your word processor. . Conclusion I am quite impressed with the full-featured MASTER BIBLE. It is a must for those who love the New Ame1ican Standard, the standard for literal English translations. I highly recommend MASTER BIBLE to any student of Scripture seeking a high-perfo1mance, cost-effective com- puter concordance and research tool. It is a powerful program with full range of helpful options. Because of this, however, it is initially cumber- some to get used to. But it does not take too long before you experience the joy of computer-assisted research. Q Byron Snapp Book Review Sermons from 1828 to 1860 by Wil- liam Cunningham, Still Waters Re- vival Books4 710-3 7 A Ave. Edmonton , AB Canada T6L 3T5 hb. 416 pp. These twenty-eight sermons from the pen of Dr. William Cunningham are each theological honeycombs drip- ping with an evangelistic love for the Lord Jesus. Cunningham is probably best known for his theological lec- tures. However such knowledge should not deter the reader from purchasing this volume. Dr. Cunningham ap- proaches each passage with a pastor 1 s heart. He does not take the reader down various theological roads of thought pointing out theological er- rors. Instead he opens up the text in a simple Scriptural manner. Forexample in his sermon entitled How to Estimate Repentance (Luke 15: 10) he sets forth his aim in his introduction: uw e shall attempt first to explain the true Nature and Character of that event or transac- tion which is described in the text the repentance of a sinner; and then con- sider, in the second place, what are the feelings with which this event is or ought to be viewed." (p.20) Having set out the path that is to be covered, he takes the reader along that trail of thought. Cunningham 1 s sermons close with a plea to the lost to come to Christ. One of many examples is found at the close of his sermon on Eph. 1:22 The Headship of the God-Man. "If therefore, there be any of you who are still living December, 1993 :j: THE COUNSEL of Chalcedon ~ 23 without Christ, and who have not yet sUbmitted your hearts to His author- ity, consider the fearful and incalcu- lable danger: to which you are ex'- posed, so 1ong as you continue in your present condition. Haste and flee for refuge to the hope set before you in the Gospel, even to Him whp is a covert from the storm and a shield from the tempest. Accept Him whom God hath sent forth to propitiation through faith in His blood. KiSs the Son, lest in His anger ye perish from the way; for ifonceHiswrath begin to burn, blessed only are they that put their trust in Him." (p.250) The reader is reminded that true theological doctrine centers on Christ. One cannot truly know correct theol- ogy apart from savingly knowing that gracious Savior, Jesus. Thus here is a good reminder for pastors. Congrega- tions do not need to be fed theological expositions that are empty of the Gos- pel message. Noris every sermon to be just a message on heaven or hell as important as these topics are. These sermons provide the reader With ex- amples of how sound Calvinistic the- ology can be preached and yet such preaching centers on the Gospel. This volume should be of particu- lar interest today to. many who desire sound doctrinal, evangelistic preach- ing, yet cannot find such preaching in their area. These sermons, preached during Cunningham's thirteen year pastoral ministry, provide good devo- tional -reading to ?.ccompany one's study of Scripture. Although a persop._ will not learn of the importance of applying God's Word to specific soci- etal the reader (including pastors) can be reminded of the fact that Calvinistic doctrine is Christ-centered and evangelistic.Such doctrinal preaching is greatly needed in our own day. This limited edition reprint is a reminder that there is a growing hunger for such preaching in our generalion . .Q Non-Profit Org.
