Arts Integration
Tuesday, August 5, 14
The performing arts department at AISU is grounded in
the concept of experiential learning and the idea that
quality art educates and that quality education is an art.
We seek to foster a bold new generation of innovators
who are well-versed in collaboration and able to harness
the emerging technologies and cultural eclecticism of the
21
st
century to become active agents in dening the
future of creativity and artistry.

Nelson Goodman
The difference between art and science is not that between feeling and fact, synthesis
and analysis. . .but rather a difference in domination of certain specic characteristics of
symbols. The arts must be taken no less seriously than the sciences as modes of
discovery, creation, and enlargement of knowledge in the broad sense of advancement of
the understanding. [In] these days of experimentation with the performing arts. . .music,
pictures, and dance all interpenetrate in making a world
-- Nelson Goodman (Ways of Worldmaking)
Goodman's view is that we use symbols in our perceiving, understanding, and
constructing the worlds of our experience: the sciences and arts equally contribute to
the enterprise of understanding the world. Goodman advocates a form of cognitivism:
by using symbols we discover (indeed we build) the worlds we live in, and the interest
we have in symbolsartworks amongst themis distinctively cognitive. Aesthetics is
but a branch of epistemology. (The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)

Integration
HOW can I effectively integrate the arts as I teach?
Think creatively. Consider employing arts integration within a variety of educational
settingscrew, workshops, intensives, etc.
Consider project-based learning as a vehicle for integrating the arts and the arts as a
vehicle for integrating project-based learning.
Use the performing arts staff as a resource.
Find an entry point for students. What interests you? What will interest them?
Avoid using the arts merely as a means of delivering knowledge about another subject
area. Try--as you are able--to deliver concrete knowledge about the art form itself.
Focus on skill-building alongside creativity. Avoid superficial or pseudo-art
experiences that don't foster skills or deliver actual knowledge.
Craft an experience that offers a low floor, a high ceiling, and wide walls.
Emphasize the verbs of art rather than the nouns (processes and aesthetic exploration
rather than products alone). Kids don't remember facts; they remember experiences.
