Kantha embroidery, a work of unique quality and cultural identity, is a popular style that
awakened the skill and talent of rural women.
India is an eminent hub of its indigenous arts and
creations. One such noteworthy and solitary
heritages of Indian tradition is Kantha embroidery.
Kantha, a significant symbol, that represents the
content that usually runs in womens mind such as
romance, philosophy, sentiment and other
happenings in daily lives, is still the most popular and
exciting form of embroidery worldwide. These
Bengal works are remarkable accumulations and life-
time bestows of India.
Kantha is an etymology which is derived from a
Sanskrit word Kontha, means rags or tattered
clothes. Kantha embroidery sometimes also called as
Nakshi Kantha, Lepkantha or Sujni Kantha etc
depending on the finished products.
The history of this amazing Kantha embroidery is
quite famous since the times that are immemorial.
Kantha is perhaps the oldest traditional forms of Indian embroidery as it can be traced back to
the first and second A.D. During pre-partition days, Kantha embroidery was basically a Bengals
folk quilt. There is a myth circulated it which points out that Lord Buddha and his disciples used
old rags with different kinds of patch works to cover themselves at night, and this gave the
Kantha embroidery its origin.

Later, a book of Krishndas Kaviraj mentioned about
Bengal Kantha in 5
th
century. Now days, West Bengal and
Bangladesh are majorly producing these works.
Earlier, this work was done by rural women of Bengal,
only in spare times as a time passing work. They have
made usage of old and unnecessary clothes as basic
fabrics in starting days. But now, professional weavers
and adept artisans are making this art spicy.
Materials that required in designing Kantha are: saris,
trace papers, pens, needles and threads. In making a
standard Kantha, minimum of 5-6 saris are required. In
olden days, white was used as the basic background
cloth with blue, red and black thread works.
The saris are first attached to attain the required size
and smoothened to detect any folds or creases. Different
stitching techniques are used according to the designs or
based on the requirements. Basically there are 7
types of Kantha stitches: Lepkantha, Sujni Kantha,
Baiton Kantha, Oaar Kantha, Archilata Kantha,
Durjani Kantha and Rumal Kantha.
Kantha embroidery is being used in many
different styles including; saris, salwar suits,
kurtis, dhotis, shawls, pillows, window curtains
and other household things.
The motifs designed on clothes earlier were birds,
animals, folk scenes, fishes and imagery that
depicted different views of livelihood for the
people living in Bengal. The major motifs such as
solar, moon, wheel, tree of life, swastika, kalka,
water, animals, mountain, boat, foot prints, rath,
mosque, panja, kantha, palanquin, home and
other agricultural implements are designed
intricately now days. These arts are also famous
for their border works like wavy, pen, anchor,
fish, necklace and other geometrical shaped
borders.
Kantha embroidery saris with patch borders and zari works
are classical and formal wears. Embroidery works of
Kantha saris with designer works and motifs are apt for
weddings, festivals, parties and other grand occasions.
