A report on the June gathering.
Considering the we are in the holiday season and in June we always have Wimbledon to
compete with and of course this year the World Cup, the attendance was very good for
the June gathering. We have a bass player to accompany us guitarists whenever
possible, and why is that? Please scroll down for my article on "Guitarists be Good
Accompanists", for the answer. A new face to the club, Ed Harrison, replaced our resident
double-bass player Dave Turner on this occasion.
Andy Hulme was also unable to attend because of another gig, so Tony Cordes and I with
Ed on bass started the evening with a few jazz standards. (Tony is an extremely fine
Freddie Green style player who can really swing). We played " But Beautiful", "I Thought
About You", "Time After Time" and "Yesterday".
All the way from Aberdeen, yes, Scotland, John Barclay, with his 1963 L5C, had travelled
down for a lesson and a play at the club. He played "Take The A Train", Summertime"
with the Wes Montgomery changes and "Green Dolphin Street", accompanied by
myself with Ed on bass.

Tony Cordes then accompanied Charles Howorth playing "Ain't Misbehavin" and "A
Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square". John Gracie and Keith Eagling were next with Ed
on double bass playing a couple of Bossa Novas. Les Renshaw then joined Ed and
me playing "One Note Samba" and "Autumn Leaves". Up next were Ray Brooker and
Tony Cordes with Ed on bass, playing "Moonglow", "Mitch's Lament", a tune composed
by Herb Ellis, and "Sunny Side Of The Street".

Last man up was Dennis Holland who, accompanied by Ed and myself, played "Sunny"
and Georgia". Keith Eagling then joined Ed and me to finish off the evening with a few
jazz standards.
My thanks to Keith Foddy for the photos.
The above is from memory with some help from Tony Cordes and Ray Brooker. My
apologies if I've left anyone out.

GUITARISTS! BE GOOD ACCOMPANISTS!
by Trefor Owen
CHORD KNOWLEDGE IS ESSENTIAL FOR GUITARISTS OF ANY STYLE!
There are many aspects to becoming a complete jazz guitarist.
The guitarist as an accompanist is an important but sadly neglected one.

There are many points of view on this subject, but whatever your viewpoint one
thing has to be remembered and that is:
"What is you playing situation at the time"?
e g Are you playing in a quintet or quartet consisting of two harmonic
instruments, (piano and guitar or two guitars), bass and drums?
Are you playing in a quartet where the guitar is the harmonic main-stay?
Are you playing in a duo, (guitar & sax or two guitars)?
EACH SITUATION MEANS THAT YOU HAVE TO ADAPT TO WHAT IS REQUIRED AT
THE TIME!
The following is my overview of the Art of Accompaniment.
The guitar, like the piano, is a harmonic instrument, and is used extensively not only as a
solo voice but, because of its harmonic nature, as a means of accompaniment.
When playing in a Jazz quartet, (e.g. horn, guitar, bass and drums), the guitarist for most
of the time will be playing chords, thereby accompanying. The guitarist in this situation is
the harmonic mainstay of the band. Guitarists in general have a weakness in this area.
The number of hours spent practising accompaniment, compared to single line
technique, are few.
To become a good accompanist, the guitarist must develop the ability to play a good four
in the bar rhythm, (Freddie Green style), which for today's player is almost a forgotten
art. I believe that every guitarist should be able to create a solid pulse. In doing so you
are dealing with time. Time is a very neglected area of music.
To play four in the bar correctly and make it swing takes a lot of patient practise!
Also, if you are a beginner in jazz, your facility will probably limit you to playing no
more than four in the bar rhythm!
Having the ability to create a pulse by playing even time, i.e. knowing the value of a
quarter note, (crotchet), is not only important to the accompanist, but also to the soloist,
as knowing where the underlying pulse is means you can correctly divide and sub-divide
time into eighth and sixteenth notes etc. Because of the percussive nature of the
instrument, this is an area where I believe guitarists have a weakness, but is another
subject.
Some guitarists are good line players but poor chord players. It is important for each area
of study to develop evenly, (parallel studies). A good practice procedure will allow this to
happen. Imagine a giant jig-saw puzzle with pieces spread out all over a table. Each
piece is an area of study. The object is to create a complete picture, but if one piece is
missing this cannot be achieved.
The art of accompanying is often best achieved through simplicity. Occasionally a chord
has to be played to maintain the nature of the melody or to create a desired effect,

therefore an extended or altered chord is adopted, but more often than not the bare
essentials (triads) are all that are required.
I have several studies relating to the Art of Accompaniment, please see my website
