PRESENT of IRREGULAR VERBS

VERBO SER (=to be): it goes with nouns, such as professions and nationalities,
tells geographical and permanent locations, and it deals with characteristics.

VERBO ESTAR (=to be): it also goes with nouns, tells geographical locations, and it deals
with emotional states. The main difference from SER is that ESTAR means something that it
is NOT permanent, but a TEMPORARY state.

VERBO TER (=to have): among the two or three most common and useful verbs in
Portuguese. The singular TEM and the plural TM are pronounced exactly the same. TEM is
also used in everyday speech to express existence. It means both: There is and There are.

VERBO IR (=to go): it is extremely common- youll use it dozens of times every day. Its
forms bear no relation to the infinite. PARA and A are the prepositions that will always
follow the verb IR (to go).

*VERBO IR indicating immediate FUTURE: IR + Infinitive VERB


VERBO FAZER (=to make, to do): it is also an extremely common verb. When you ask a
question with FAZER in its meaning to make, the answer will also contain FAZER. When the
meaning is to do, the answer will be given with any other verb. The question: O QUE VOC
FAZ? is used to ask someones profession.

*VERBO FAZER is also used with weather expressions. In Portuguese,it makes
weather, and not it is. E.g: Que tempo faz? Faz frio. (whats the weather like? Its cold)

VERBO PODER (=can): it indicates possibility, ability or permission

VERBO SABER & CONHECER (=to know): the verb SABER relates to know how and
knowledge of things, such as formulas, names, lists, etc. It is irregular only for EU.
CONHECER is a regular verb and shows you know people and places.
