Teacher: SAMAH ADDAN SUBJECT: SCIENCE Title/Topic: Elements, mixtures and compounds

Learning objectives:
Students will be able to describe scientifically elements
compounds and mixtures.
Students will be able to express their understanding of
elements and compounds in word equations.
Using simple models students will be able to identify
elements, mixtures and compounds.
Students will be able to describe how elements combine
to make compounds that have different properties and
that mixtures retain many of the properties of its
components.
Literacy:
When students are answering
questions, make sure they write proper
sentences.
Key words: Elements, atoms mixtures,
compounds, separation, chemically
combined.
Starter Activity
15 minutes
Use PowerPoint
Give two students in the front to hand-out worksheets.
Task 1: Give students 1 minute to discuss with each other and write
down what they understand the definition of element, mixture and
compounds are.
While students are doing the task, teacher does the register.
Using PowerPoint: reveal the answers and ask for a show of hands if
students got it correct. Tell them to correct their definitions.
Task 2: (Give students 5 minute) using a copy of the periodic table,
students will be given a list of compounds and molecules and they will
find the elements they are made up of. Then they will group the
elements into which ones they can find and which they cannot find.

Using PowerPoint show a series of examples of elements, mixtures and
compounds on the board. Allow students to identify the image and
explain how they know that is the case, and then reveal answer.
Divide the students into groups of three and give out Legos.
Students should use the Legos to model the elements and compounds
on their task sheet 3.
For evidence of progress and attainment, teacher will go around the
class and see whatever the students made and ask them to explain
randomly.

Plenary:
10 minutes
Demonstrate mixing iron filling and sulphur and using their individual
properties (iron magnetic) show how mixtures can be separated.
Then demonstrate reaction of iron filling and sulphur and explain how
the new compound formed has completely different physical property.
As precaution students will be told not to stare at the burning of the iron
and sulphur directly.
Students should write explanation why a chemical reaction is needed for
a new compound to be formed and not mixtures as seen in the
demonstration.
Give 5 minutes to pack away the Legos and hand out game cards with
different words and picture examples on everything they encountered
during the lesson.
To review learning, students will be asked to hold up their individual
cards and will be assessed how well they understand the concepts.
