see,thegeometricdistributionisaspecialcaseofthenegativebinomialdistribution.
NegativeBinomialExperiment
Anegativebinomialexperimentisastatisticalexperimentthathasthefollowingproperties:
Theexperimentconsistsofxrepeatedtrials.
Eachtrialcanresultinjusttwopossibleoutcomes.Wecalloneoftheseoutcomesasuccess
andtheother,afailure.
Theprobabilityofsuccess,denotedbyP,isthesameoneverytrial.
Thetrialsareindependentthatis,theoutcomeononetrialdoesnotaffecttheoutcomeonother
trials.
Theexperimentcontinuesuntilrsuccessesareobserved,whererisspecifiedinadvance.
Considerthefollowingstatisticalexperiment.Youflipacoinrepeatedlyandcountthenumberoftimes
thecoinlandsonheads.Youcontinueflippingthecoinuntilithaslanded5timesonheads.Thisisa
negativebinomialexperimentbecause:
Theexperimentconsistsofrepeatedtrials.Weflipacoinrepeatedlyuntilithaslanded5times
onheads.
Eachtrialcanresultinjusttwopossibleoutcomesheadsortails.
Theprobabilityofsuccessisconstant0.5oneverytrial.
Thetrialsareindependentthatis,gettingheadsononetrialdoesnotaffectwhetherweget
headsonothertrials.
