COURSE NAME: Machine Shop Practices
COURSE CODE: MACH1221
COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course introduces the student to metal removal operations on conventional and CNC machine tools. Machine shop safety,
the use of measuring tools, layout tools, hand tools, and bench work is introduced. Participation in a shop project enables the
student to gain experience in metal removal processes.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
OUTCOME Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to
1 Select the appropriate processes to be utilized in the manufacture of cast, forged, or machined parts.

2 Perform workpart measurement and layout of parts for machining

Basic Blueprint reading
Use of Common Measuring Tools
Use of Common Layout tools
3 Determine how to produce parts using conventional machine tools.

4 Determine how to produce parts using CNC machine tools

Basic Programming Languages
Basic CNC Machine Setup and Operation
5 Produce a multiple parts shop project on conventional and CNC machine tools

Determine part flow through various machine tools
Part inspection
Assemble parts and note deficiencies
Determine if parts are scrap or could be re-worked

STUDENT EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES
Students are required to supply and wear the following personal safety equipment in the lab:
CSA approved safety glasses
CSA approved steel-toe boots
smock or coveralls

DELIVERY METHOD
This course will be taught using a variety of delivery methods which may include face-to-face, online, or blended teaching
platforms. Activities such as collaborative exercises/assignments, seminars, labs, discussion, audio/visual presentations, case
studies, and work integrated learning may be used to support learning.
