Bloomberg rides to media’s rescue

Beleaguered media professionals of New York, take heart. Eight initiatives to promote innovation,
attract new media businesses and help traditional-media workers transition to jobs in the digital
sector are on the way.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced the initiatives Tuesday at IAC headquarters on Manhattan’s
West Side. They grew out of MediaNYC 2020, a program that convened media and technology
executives with university and government officials in recent months to develop strategies for the
media sector.
The initiatives are projected to create 8,000 jobs, according to city officials, and are designed to
address the weak spots in New York’s media economy.
At a briefing last week to introduce the initiatives to reporters, officials of the New York City Economic
Development Corp. pointed out that New York’s biggest media industries, like publishing and
television, are projected to claim less and less of consumers’ time every year through 2012.
Meanwhile, digital media industries like gaming and social networking are growing by double digits.
“New York City is the media capital of the world, but—with the industry undergoing profound changes
—it’s incumbent on us to take steps now to capitalize on growth opportunities and ensure we remain
an industry leader,” Mr. Bloomberg said in a statement.
One initiative calls for the creation of NYC Media Lab, which would be similar to media labs at
Stanford University and MIT. The goal will be to bring together academic researchers and corporate
partners.
The EDC will issue a request for proposals this month aimed at selecting the partners to develop the
lab, and expects it to be up and running by January.
Another initiative, called “JumpStart New Media,” will create a boot camp retraining program for
traditional media professionals looking to restart their careers on the digital side.

The program will train 50 participants per month, and offer unpaid 10-week apprenticeships at new
media companies. The boot camp is expected to launch in September.
The city will also launch a media “freelancer hive” at 55 Broad St., in partnership with the Downtown
Alliance. A 5,000-square-foot space will be fitted to provide short-term workspace for 50 digital media
freelancers.
“There’s a general goal of increasing entrepreneurship,” said Seth Pinsky, president of the EDC,
discussing the programs at last week’s briefing. He put the total price for the initiatives at $1.5 million
over the next several years, noting that the city has kept costs down by partnering with businesses.
Among the other initiatives are a media tech bond program, which will provide tax-exempt financing
for media and technology companies, and a media and tech fellowship to be awarded to 20 “rising
star” entrepreneurs every year.
In addition, there will be an “NYC BigApps Competition,” for New York companies that create digital
applications that use city data; and a focus on international and domestic recruitment, to encourage
emerging companies to headquarter here.
Economists Believe Recession Nearing an
End

The economy will emerge from the recession in the second half of the year, but growth will be
a tepid 2% in 2010, a survey of 23 leading economists by BNA found. By comparison, the U.S.
economy grew an average of 3.1% a year between 1995 and 2004.
With growth so slow, it won’t be able to put an end to unemployment, said the economists,
who predict it will rise from 9.4% in May to 9.9% next year.
Thus, most consumers won’t recognize the end of the recession until the middle or latter part
of 2010. The economists don’t expect the Federal Reserve to ease its monetary policy until
next year, when the Fed funds rate will reach 1%. They also said that the glut of housing
inventory is beginning to ease.

A Summer Focus…
This has been the mildest summer in many years and that offers increased opportunities for outdoor
activities. Networking should surely be at the top of your activity list as there are so many places,
events, and times that you can be amongst throngs of people. Job search has increasingly become
a numbers game that has only been made more acute by the added volume of job seekers. There
are many new studies that show the value of upping your networking contacts because everyone
else is also upping theirs. Other observations from the media include the fact that more people are
staying close to home for their personal time away from work (stay-cations) and then keeping track of
what’s going on at the office even when they’re supposed to be on down time. Again, this offers the
enhanced prospect of making that critical contact during the summer months when normally things
would be slower due to the difficulty of finding the necessary introduction based on his/her vacation
travel. Whenever, wherever, and whatever should be your buzz words for acting out the boy scout
motto, “Be prepared”…
