Aim of the program:

To assist students become fluent and legible writers and transfer the skills and strategies taught to writing in other subject areas. For students to develop
their own writing style.
Outcomes:
ENS3-2A Composes, edits and presents well-structured and
coherent texts
ENS3-9A Recognises, reflects on and assesses their strengths as
a learner
Quality Teaching Focus:
Explicit Quality Criteria
Frequent, detailed and specific statements are provided to the students about the quality
of the work required throughout task completion and during reflection on their finished
work.
Learning Intention
To be developed collaboratively with students prior to each
lesson.
Success Criteria
To be developed collaboratively with students prior to each lesson. Suggestions are
provided for each lesson.
Indicators
Uses correct pen grip and maintains correct body position
Uses finger movements to control the pen while sliding forearm across the page
Writes fluently with appropriate size, slope and spacing
Demonstrates ability to connect different groups of letters
Displays appropriate use of pen lifts and speed writes legibly
Assessment:
Handwriting will be assessed using the following assessment strategies:
Informal assessment of students handwriting in formal lessons
Formative Assessment using the strategies provided throughout the term
Observation of the transfer of writing skills and techniques to written work in other subjects.

Suggested Formative Assessment Strategies
Stars and Stairs

Feedback symbols for use in feedback for teachers, peers and self -reporting. The star is drawn next to improvements and good
work. The stair symbol is drawn next to one or two areas that the student needs to focus on for more improvement.
I Can Statements Students self-evaluate their handwriting by making oral statements about their abilities.
Peer Assessment Students ask their peers to underline best examples of a specific handwriting focus e.g. best speed join, most fluent sentence etc.
Report Back Students make statement about what they have learned and how they can improve
