Oryza Global Weather Outlook
Aug 07, 2014
Most parts of Southwest China can expect rainfall in the next three days. Northeast China, north inner
Mongolia and Northern Heilongjiang can expect a few showers on Friday.
Heavy rain is expected in the upper North, the Northeast, the East and the Southwest Coast of Thailand today
and tomorrow. Thereafter, light rain is expected over Thailand for the next three days. Such continuous rain is
favourable for rice crop in Thailand, especially with improved moisture conditions there.
Vietnam can expect scattered showers on Thursday and Friday. Summer rice in Vietnam benefited from
improved rainfall that brought season-to-date totals close to those of last year.
Heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places in India such as Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Rajasthan,
West Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, South interior Karnataka and Kerala in the next three days. In Eastern India,
heavy showers continued in rice growing areas of East Madhya Pradesh and Odisha, maintaining favourable
moisture supplies. Most of Northern India has concerns over water supply replenishment for the upcoming Rabi
season (second crop) as seasonal rainfall remained less than 75% of normal in many areas.
Showers are expected at some places in Pakistan such as Sindh, Kashmir, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala
and Lahore divisions, in upper KP, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Sahiwal, Bahawalpur divisions and Baluchistan in the
next two days. Isolated heavy rainfall also expected in Mirpur Khas, Gujranwala and Rawalpindi divisions
during the period.
Light showers are likely to occur at many places over Dhaka, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong
and Sylhet divisions in Bangladesh today and tomorrow.
Showers are expected across Indonesia on Thursday and Friday. Heavy rainfall is possible in central Borneo.
By August 3, 60% of this years rice crop was heading in the US. Arkansas rice farmers continued to scout for
diseases and insects while applying fungicides. Overall, 71% of the rice crop was reported to be in good
condition, unchanged from last week, but slightly better than the same time last year.

Sensors, Cameras, Tabs Team up to Increase Rice
Production in Japan
Aug 07, 2014
Who said rice farms should only comprise paddy, an irrigation pump, a few farmers and some basic farming
equipment? The farms in Yamaguchi Prefecture in Japan which produce the Yamada Nishiki type of rice used
in making the Dassai brand of sake, go a step ahead to use sensors, tablets, PCs etc for data aggregation and
analysis to ensure a consistently good yield. The high-end rice initiative is monitored by Asahi Shuzo, a sake
brewery in Japan, and Japanese technology company MNC Fujitsu Limited. After the demand for the Yamada
Nishiki rice exceeded its supply, Asahi Shuzo adopted the new software to enhance production to meet its new
demands. In April 2014, the Agricultural Production Management SaaS of Fujitsu's AkisaiFood and Agriculture
Cloud and multi-sensing networks was installed at farms in Yamaguchi to gather data and analyse farming
activity, production costs etc. The information is expected to provide knowledge of cultivation to new
producers. Every day, tablets, smart phones and other handheld devices record the type of activity along with
the time and location. Auto sensors fitted in fields collect and record hourly data such as temperature, humidity,
soil temperature and moisture etc. Every afternoon, a camera photographs the rate of growth. Once the crop is
harvested in October, the data will be analysed to see how best to optimize nature, processes to adopt to ensure

Thailand Rice Auction Brings High Demand but
Low Bids
Aug 07, 2014
Thailand's first rice tender after the military junta took over in May 2014 has attracted huge number of bidders
today due to increasing demand and prices, reports Reuters.
The Commerce Ministry put up around 167,000 tons of rice (all types) for sale and more than 40 rice exporters,
millers and domestic traders participated in the auction, according to official sources.
Exporters who participated in the bidding process told media sources that they bid at around $5-$15 per ton
below market prices in view of high competition. The Commerce Ministry, which has been expecting a good
response for the auction has so far not commented on the bidding. It is to submit the winning bids for approval
by the National Council for peace and Order (NCPO) and announce the results next week.
Export price of Thai 5% broken white rice currently stands at around $440 per ton, slightly below the Viet 5%
rice at around $465 - $470 per ton.The Commerce Ministry is keen on selling around 200,000 to 500,000 tons
of rice between August and September 2014. The NCPO is planning to sell around 500,000 tons a month and
complete the sale of existing 18 million rice stocks over the next three years, according to local sources. The
proceeds from rice auctions would be used to service debts under the paddy pledging scheme introduced by the
previous government in October 2011. Losses from rice pledging scheme are estimated at around 500 billion
baht (around $15.5 billion) by the Finance Ministry. The NCPO stopped rice sales to carry out nation-wide
inspections in government warehouses.

Specific Bird Species can Befriend Rice Farmers,
say IRRI Scientists
Aug 07, 2014
Some specific bird species can be useful to farmers in rice fields, according to IRRI resident bird experts
Richard Smedley and Clare Jones. They say rice fields can be used to create suitable habitats to certain wild
bird species and can be used to reduce insect and snail populations in them.Based on experiments conducted in
IRRI rice plots in the 2014 dry season. the two scientists have conducted a workshop on July 30, 2014 to train
fellow researchers on identifying farmer-friendly bird species by presenting various survey methods used in
ornithological surveys. The participants were made familiar with the man characteristics, unique behaviors,
songs and sounds of most commonly spotted birds in rice fields. They said the new skills coupled with
ecological engineering practices would help researchers to identify bird-species useful for rice farmers in
combating insect and snails as well as create a suitable habitat for birds facilitating perching, nesting and
foraging.
Swallows and kingfishers were identified as most commonly seen birds attracted to the rice fields during
experimental time. The two bird experts are planning to extend their experiments to wet season as well.

U.S. Authorities Spot Khapra Beetle Larvae in
Pakistan Rice
Aug 07, 2014
The U.S. Customs authorities have found dead larvae of Khapra beetle in a rice shipment from Pakistan,
according to the Washington Post.U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) told media sources on
Wednesday that a 1,066-carton shipment containing around 20 tons of rice was found to be infested with
Khapra beetle larvae and that the authorities issued an emergency action notice to the importing entity ordering
the shipment to be destroyed or re-exported. Officials noted that the importer chose to re-export the 20 ton rice
shipment."Khapra beetle is one of worlds most destructive insect pests of grains, cereals and stored foods and
remains the only insect in which CBP takes regulatory action against even while in a dead state, say CBP
officials.
This is not the first time Pakistani rice is found to be infested with Khapra beetle. In last August, the U.S.
Customs officials have returned a rice shipment from Pakistan after finding traces of Khapra beetle in it. In July
last year, Mexican authorities also banned rice shipments from Pakistan due to detection of Khapra beetle in
some rice samples. Pakistan rice exporters have been urging the government to reconcile rice trade with
Mexico.

Will Tanzania Be Africa's Top Rice Producer and
Exporter?

Rice production in Tanzania is booming but so is the countrys urban population. Tanzania will therefore be
challenged to satisfy its domestic demand for rice, let alone to become a world exporter. Some voices from
Tanzanias rice sector foresee the country becoming a leading rice exporter in the not too distant future.
Tanzania is already one of the largest producers of rice in Sub-Saharan Africa, and unlike the other big
producers like Nigeria and Madagascar, Tanzania is operating very close to self sufficiency. In this sense,
Tanzania looks like the most likely African candidate to become a significant rice exporter. However, rice is an
important food staple in Tanzania. Like most East African countries, maize is the number one food staple, but
this is expected to change. Tanzanias population is growing at 2.7%. Its population tripled between 1967 and
2012. The capital Dar es Salaam is growing at 4.3%, making it the third fastest growing city in Africa. As
with many African coastal cities, rice has is one of the preferred food staples. In order to feed this growing
urban population, Tanzania may very well have to become the regions largest rice producer if it doesnt want
to become dependent on international rice markets.Rice is already seen as a cash crop by Tanzanian farmers
because of its high demand in urban regions of the country. The booming domestic urban markets therefore
present a lucrative opportunity for Tanzanian rice farmers. If Sub-Saharan Africa does produce rice exporting
countries in the future, it seems unlikely that one of them will be Tanzania.

Who's Topping the List for Highest Rice Yields in
Sub-Saharan Africa?
Rwanda highest rice yielding country in Sub-Saharan Africa in 2013 produces
over 5.5 tons of rough rice per hectare, followed by Niger (5 tons) and Kenya (4.6
tons).Rice production in Sub-Saharan Africa is characterized as low yielding
because most rice on the continent is grown in rain-fed systems so a lack of water
availability tends to limit rice yields. On top of this, a lack of other resources like
fertilizers and quality seed are seen as explaining why rice yields are usually only
between 1 and 1.5 tons per hectare.
However, by looking at national yield statistics we can see that this may not be a
good representation of African rice production anymore. For instance, over half of
the sub-Saharan African countries are producing more than 1.5 tons per hectare on
average. In fact, eight countries have a national average of 3 tons of rice per hectare.
Interestingly, two of the three countries topping the list are East African countries.
Rice tends to be a more important crop in West Africa. Another interesting point is
that many of the countries in the very dry, arid Sahel region, like Niger, Mauritania,
Sudan, Senegal and Mali actually have some of the highest yields and highest
potential the increase yields because of their access to irrigation and the fact that
they have so little rain they can control water inputs.
