SUMMARY:

The article is entitled as Hyperbilirubinemia: a risk factor for infection in the surgical
intensive care unit. Hyperbilirubenimia is a clinical condition which there is too much bilirubin in
the blood. According to the journal hyperbilirubinemia in intensive care unit or ICU patients is
common, whereas, the elevation of bilirubin predisposes patients to infection. Laboratory results
suggest that there is relationship between jaundice and immune function. The journal also talks
about the research conducted by specialist wherein there is comparison between patients who
manifest this clinical symptom and to those who doesnt have it. At the end of the study
conducted, it has been concluded that there is an increased susceptibility to infection among
jaundiced surgical ICU (SICU) patients that persists even when sepsis-related
hyperbilirubinemia patients are excluded.
NURSING EDUCATION:

This article is essential to nursing education because it refreshes and updates my basic
concepts about community health nursing. It has been part of our lives as a nurse and as future
registered nurses to disseminate information with reliable sources. It serves as a vital tool for us
novice learners of the academe and as novice health educators, for us to enlighten the patients
or significant others with the information being studied.

NURSING PROFESSION:

The article serves as an eye opener and skill enhancer for me as a novice. This article
has a tremendous influence on current and future professional nursing practice or profession in
dealing with surgical intensive care unit patients.

NURSING RESEARCH:

Research is an essential aspect for the nursing and medical world whereas research
builds the body of knowledge used to teach new nurse clinicians and improve the quality and
efficiency of care. This article can make a quantum leap in the betterment of care and can lead
to nurses who are more educated and prepared to be investigators themselves.

REACTION:

The journal is indeed helpful and ital. to nursing and medical world but In my point of
view the conducted research must have implemented the equal numbers or population of the
both sides of the group in order to avoid bias. It has been part of all aspects of nursing that
research studies have a quantum impact in developing and modifying mode of care in order for
us in medical world to give quality and safe care. The information being disseminated by the
researchers through this adjunct study can be helpful to surgical ward, especially in dealing with
patients who actually have this kind of condition. Lastly, in the Philippine setting, I recommend
that there will also be a comprehensive and thorough study about this condition in all institutions
of care, in order to find and rule out the actual problems that the elevation of bilirubin levels or
hyperbilirubinemia can give to patients, who are acutely and chronically experiencing illnesses
associated with it.
