LetusaddawordhereconcerningtheissueofIstighāthaandIsti‘āna.Forstarts,bothof
themareinthesamevalley[i.e.theysharethesameruling],forintheadīthconcerning
theintercessionthatisfoundinal-Bukhārī,itsays:“[theywillseekaidwith]0dam,then
Mūsā,thenMu3ammad…”Thisprovesthatitispermissibletoutilizethewordingof
Istighātha in the same sense as Tawassul is used. As with regards to the adīth that
states: “Help is not to be sought from me [lā yustaghāthu bī]” in the collection of al-
8abarānī,itschaincontains[‘Abdullāhbin]Luhay’a,andwehaveexplainedhisstatusin
ourbook al-Ishfāq,soitdoesnotstandtoopposethe[other]authenticadīth.Aswith
regards to the other adīth which states: “When you seek aid, then seek the aid of
Allāh…’’,itmeans:whenyouseektheaidofanyonethatisofassistance,seektheaidof
Allahforeaseinallofyouraffairs—andthisisinaccordancewiththeliteralmeaningof
the adīth, for the Muslim does not forget the One that is the Enabler of the means
whenheseeksaidinoneofthosemeans.Taketheexampleof‘Umarwhosoughtrain
throughal-‘Abbās.Hedidnotforgettosaywhenprayingforrain:“OhAllah,sendus
rain.”ThisistheIslamiccharacter.

If we did not understand the adīth in this way, we would be obliged to interpret it
figuratively and it would have contradicted numerous verses of the Qur’ān and adīth
thataretoomanytomentionhere.Hence,itwouldbefarfetchedtoconsidertheword
“when’’ in this adīth to mean “Every time”, rather, according to the logicians, it is
considered to be of the expressions of ihmāl [indetermination as to the quantity of a
proposition],therefore,theopponenthasnothingtograspfromitinhisargumentatall.
Add to this, the fact that the singular pronoun is used, and the fact thatthe elite—and

AsforthewordsoftheExalted:“YoualoneweworshipandYoualoneweseekaid.”[al-
Fāti3a:5],itisinthecontextofworshipandguidance,asillustratedbythecontextofthe
verseaswellastheorderinwhichthewordsappear–andthisisafittingwayofaddress
whenmakingpersonalentreaties–soitdoesnotnegatethenormalandcustomaryways
andmeansusedinthisworldlylife.

Our close friend, the  ‘Allāmah and author of numerous splendid works, the major
Ustādh;ShaykhMuhammadusnaynal-‘Adawīal-Mālikīdidverywellwhenhewrote
numerous books repelling the misconceptions invented by the Taymiyyūn [bigoted
followersofShaykhIbnTaymiyya]concerningTawassul.So,byhissplendidcheckingof
facts,hisfreshandsweetmannerofcomposition,andhisloftyrankinknowledgeabove
theShaykhsofalloftheseopponentsbytheagreementofthepeopleofknowledge,byall
ofthat,hewasabletodispelthedarknessthathadencroached.

Aswithregardstotheissueofthepeopleofthegraveshearingandcomprehending,the
mostexpansivepresentationoftheproofsinsupportofthatwasdonebythescholarof
adīth,‘Abdulayyal-Luknāwīinhisbook;Tadhkīratal-Rashīd.Aswithregardstothe
wordsoftheExalted: “Andyoucannotmakethedeadhear
“Andyoucannot makethedeadhear’’
makethedeadhear’’,accordingtotheverifying
scholars,thisiswithrespecttothepolytheists.Thishasbeenverified,sodonotpayany
attentiontotheblundersoftheerroneousones.
