786 IMAM AL ASH’ARI ABULHASAN ALI BIN ISMAIL AL ASH’ARI

a descendent of HAZRAT ABU MUSA AL ASH’ARI ra. famous sahabi of PROPHET ( S.A.W)
was born in Basra in260 AH ,educated by his step father Al-Jubbai, a Mu’tazili scholar
but, ALLAH TAA’LA had selected him for the propagation of TRUE faith of AHLE-SUNNA WAL

which was due to a vision{ru’ya} of Prophet s in which he was ordered to follow the true
way.
- On a particular FRIDAY he ascended the pulpit of the mosque and proclaimed;--Many of
you know me.
I want to tell those who do not know me that I am Abul Hasan ‘Ali al-Ash’ari.I was a
Mu’tazilite and
believed in their doctrines. Now I seek repentance from ALLAH and turn away from my
earlier beliefs;
henceforth, I shall endeavour to refute the doctrines of the Mu’tazilite and lay bare their
mweakness.”

He explained;-“It ought to be known that these sects,viz ., the Mu’tazilites and the
Qadariyah have,
in falling behind the precursors and leaders of their sects, really turned away from the right
path
and submitted to their own wishes and desires. They have explained away the Qur’anic text
in a way
unauthorized by ALLAH Almighty. Their interpretation is neither supported by reason nor by
the Traditions handed down from the Prophet, his companions or their
successors.’’[KITAB-al-IBANA p5]

IMAM-al ash’ari was the founder of Islamic scholastic theology[ AL-ILM AL KALAM].
In FIQH- jurisprudence- he followed IMAM al-SHAFI’I rah.He died in 324 AH.
During the same period another scholar IMAM Abu Mansur al-MATURIDI r [d.332AH in
Samrqand]
emerged to defend faith against heretical sects…He perfected the ash’arite system.
He was a follower of Imam Abu Hanifa r. He was another founder of Ilm al Kalam.

THE most valuable accomplishment of Imam al Ash’ari was the formulations of principles
which enabled the tenets of orthodox school which were handed down through
traditions[NAQL]
to be accepted in the light of reason[AQL]. He is regarded as one of the foremost
expounders
and renovators of Islamic Faith.[MUJADDID of the THIRD Islamic Century ] He lived and
died in Baghdad’
