Pastoral Corner
A Whisper in the Storm.

When I was growing up, with four brothers and sisters and only six years separating the five of us, things could get
quite noisy around our house. The shouts of joy while playing or arguing could be quite deafening.

In these circumstances, youd think that my parents had to do a lot of shouting and screaming to get our attention,
especially is there was a cause for correcting our behavior or imparting some discipline.
Actually, the opposite is the truth of the matter. It was a rare occasion when my parents raised their voices. And
believe me, when they did, we really took notice. At the same time, however, we also knew that the softer the
voice, especially when correcting us, the more serious the matter and we had better be really paying attention and
listen.

In the First Reading the Prophet Elijah was told go stand at the entrance of his cave on Mt. Horeb and wait for the
Lord who would be passing by. There was a violent storm, the wind filled with power and noise, and rock slides in
abundance, followed by an earthquake and fire. But the Lord was not in the wind or the storm or the earthquake
or the fire. Finally there was a soft quiet whisper. It was in the whisper that God came to Elijah.

Whispers are fragile things. We have to listen carefully, listen attentively or else we will miss what is said. Gods
voice, despite some Biblical stories to the contrary, comes most often as a whisper; the soft promptings of the
Holy Spirit dwelling within us, trying to get or attention.

And that is part of our problem, isnt it? We live in a noisy, busy, world. All sorts of voices cry out for our
attention. Those voices are often loud, strident, and seductive. It is so very easy to get caught up in the noise
around us.

Somewhere in our lives, we all need to create a space like Elijahs Cave, a space where we can go and be quiet and
listen for the Lord. For those who know how to listen, Gods voice and the whispers of the Spirit within can be
heard even in the midst of the noisy storms and trials that often grip our lives.

In the Gospel this week, even in the midst of the noise of the storm and the splashing of the waves, the Apostles
heard the gentle voice of J esus: Take courage. It is I. Do not be afraid.

Fr. Charlie Brunick, CSP
