wentieth-century composers interested in writ-
ing music for trumpet turned to a compositional
medium, the sonata, developed by composers of
the Italian Bologna School such as Giuseppe Torelli
(1658 1709), Giuseppe Jacchini (1663 1727), and
Maurizio Cazzati (1620 1677). First gaining legiti-
macy with Paul Hindemiths landmark composition,
Sonate, in 1939, the twentieth-century sonata for
trumpet and piano now represents a sizeable portion of
the modern trumpet players repertoire. The flexible
nature of the sonata setting has given modern com-
posers freedom to explore the pairing of trumpet and
piano, and the result is an impressive collection of
works by some of the centurys finest composers.
The purpose of this study has been to compile the
existing sonatas for trumpet and piano in the form of
an annotated bibliography. The authors research has
uncovered 89 works written for this instrumentation,
all of which were written after 1939. This bibliography
will provide performers and teachers with a compre-
hensive listing and guide to the types and levels of dif-
ficulty of sonatas for trumpet and piano.
The research for the project summarized many
sources. All known commercial publishers of brass
music were contacted. In addition, several comprehen-
sive online databases were searched, as well as jour-
nals of interest to brass players such as Brass Bulletin,
the International Trumpet Guild Journal, and Brass
Quarterly (now discontinued). Correspondence with
several important trumpet teachers around the coun-
try who are known for their extensive knowledge of the
literature has proved helpful. The author makes no
claims of this list being all-inclusive, but does present
the entire number of works available during the peri-
od of his research.
The criteria for inclusion of a work in this listing
were that it be titled Sonata and have the instru-
mentation for trumpet and piano on the title page or in
the lists consulted. There are trumpet sonatas with
instrumentation different then what is mentioned
above. In order to keep the study at a manageable size,
those works have not been included. Works must have
been written and published between 1900 and 2000 to
be included. Pieces that were not originally conceived
for trumpet are excluded. In addition, to make this list-
ing most useful to performers and teachers, works that
have not been published are excluded. Many of the
works listed can be located and purchased using the
information listed in each annotated entry.
Entries are listed alphabetically by the composers
last name. Each works entry includes technical and
descriptive information. The following is the template
for data of each composition within the bibliography:
1. Name of the composer.
2. Title of the composition as it appears on the title
page of the score, publisher, city, name, and date of
publication.
3. Key of the trumpet for which the piece was written
(B-flat trumpet, C trumpet, etc.).
4. The range of the trumpet part (expressed in con-
cert pitch) is listed from lowest note to highest
note, using the Helmholtz system of pitch designa-
tion (e.g., middle c is represented by c').

5. The titles of the movements and/or tempo descrip-
tions are listed in sequence in which they appear
in the work, followed by performance duration.
6. Grade of difficulty for both trumpet and piano
parts. The grades are based on a six-step scale
with I representing the least advanced material
and VI representing the most difficult. The fol-
lowing criteria for grading sonatas for trumpet and
piano was adapted from Jon Burgess

grades adhere to the same scale, and were made
after consultation and performance with profes-
sional pianists.
Grade I: Very easy, grade school level; for begin-
ning players requiring few technical demands;
use of B-flat trumpets only.
Grade II: Elementary, junior high school level:
basic technical demands required; note values
not to exceed sixteenth-notes, maximum tempo
of quarter-note equal to 120; upper range does
not exceed G''; no skips over an octave; key sig-
natures not to exceed three flats or sharps; use
of B-flat trumpets only.
Grade III: Intermediate, high school level; rhyth-
mic values not to exceed sixteenth-notes, max-
imum tempo of quarter-note equal to 132;
upper register not to exceed B-flat''; key signa-
tures not to exceed four sharps or four flats;

About the Author: Joseph Bowman is assistant profes-
sor of trumpet at the University of Tennessee at Mar-
tin. Bowman received his Doctor of Musical Arts deg-
ree from Arizona State University. He holds a Bachelor
of Music from the University of Cincinnati College-Con-
servatory of Music and a Master of Music from Arizona
State University. His principal teachers included David
Hickman, Samuel Pilafian, Alan Siebert, Marie Spez-
iale, Pat Harbison, and Matthew Sonneborn. As a per-
former, he has played with Phoenix, Memphis, and sev-
eral other orchestras, and has recorded for Summit
Records, DNote, and Naxos American. Bowman has
over thirty publications in the International Trumpet
Guild Journal and the NACWPI Journal. He is on the
artist faculty of the National Trumpet Competition in
Washington D.C., and was recently appointed editor of
the Youth Web Site for the International Trumpet Guild.
Bowman is a Yamaha Performing Artist.
