I
ts got to be one of the most talked about and debated
topics to hit the island for some time, some people love
it, others dont, but no-one can disagree that the recent
beach cleanup operation launched by the National Council
for Peace and Order (NCPO), Thailands ruling authority, has
certainly improved the overall look of Phukets West Coast
beaches. Gone are the loungers and umbrellas, unsightly
structures, and in some cases swimming pools, which have
encroached on what is actually public land. In this issue of
Phuketidex.com we have a special photo feature which shows
you just how much of a difference this operation has made.
Yes, it may be slightly harder to nd a drink to buy or a snack
to eat, but the beaches are now back to how nature intended
them to be.
Along with enjoying the beaches, another reason a growing
number of tourists chose to visit Phuket is because of the
health and wellbeing options available here, and one of the
most popular systems to aid a persons wellbeing is Yoga,
and in this issue we also give you an insight into the types
of Yoga available here and where you can partake in this
increasingly popular practice.

Hot Yoga
Hot Yoga, aka Bikram Yoga refers to any Yoga class done in a
heated room. The room is usually maintained at a temperature
of 95-100 degrees Fahrenheit. Most often, Hot Yoga tends to
be a flowing, Vinyasa style of practice in which the teacher
instructs a series of linked poses. As you can imagine, a vigorous
Yoga session at high temperature promotes profuse sweating
and makes the body very warm. Living Yoga master Bikram
Choudhury is a hot yoga innovator. His method is a set series
For anybody that doesnt really know what Yoga is all about, the most popular
type of Yoga available in Phuket is known as Hatha Yoga which concentrates
mainly on the physical and exercise related aspects. Yoga originated in India
and comprises of a series of sometimes challenging stretches and poses, many
of which appear quite amazing as the body contorts into impossible looking
shapes, and the Yogis (the term for a Yoga student) normally perform them in a
set routine depending on the type of Yoga practiced. Yoga is essentially based
on different postures (Asanas), breathing techniques (Pranayama), poses (Mudra)
and meditation. Many people who try Yoga enjoy the experience immensely,
and can expect great improvements in strength, balance and energy levels.
There are a few well known variations and different techniques in Yoga.
Methods commonly practiced in Phuket include:
of 26 postures, including two Pranayama exercises, each
of which is performed twice in a single 90-minute class.
Hot Yoga, now the most popular Yoga for men and
women, is the best 90 minute workout you can have, toning
your muscles and getting you in shape fast! Beginners are
welcome and its challenging for even the most advanced
practitioners. Your instructor will guide you through the
postures to provide you with the best workout ever.
Sweat, detox and lose fat. No more stress, aches and
pains, a Hot Yoga class is like a gas station, you gain
energy instead of losing it.
Why the heat?
Yoga changes the construction of the body from the inside
out, from bones to skin and from fingertips to toes. So
before you change it, you have to heat it up to soften
it, because a warm body is a flexible body. Then you
can reshape the body any way you want.
Hot Yoga ushes away the waste products, the toxins of
all the glands and organs of your body. It provides a natural
irrigation of the body through the circulatory system,
with the help of the respiratory system. It brings nourishments
to every cell of your body so that each one can perform
its function and keep your body healthy. Bikram Yoga
also employs heat to further that cleaning process: When
you sweat, impurities are ushed out of the body through
the skin. Practicing Yoga not only increases our supplies
of oxygen, but it also teaches us how to use that oxygen
properly we learn to control the breath through Pranayama.

Ashtanga Yoga
Ashtanga Yoga is a system of Yoga transmitted to the
modern world by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (1915-2009). This
method of yoga involves synchronizing the breath with
a progressive series of postures - a process producing
intense internal heat and a profuse, purifying sweat that
detoxies muscles and organs. The result is improved
circulation, a light and strong body, and a calm mind.
About the Ashtanga Series of Poses
The rst, or primary, series is described in Yoga Mala.
The primary series is called Yoga Chikitsa, which means
Yoga therapy. It is intended to realign the spine, detoxify
the body, and build strength, exibility, and stamina. The
series of about 75 poses takes an hour and a half to two
hours to complete, beginning with sun salutations (Surya
Namaskara A and Surya Namaskara B) and moving on
to standing poses, seated poses, inversions, and backbends
before relaxation.
The intermediate or second series is called Nadi
Shodana, meaning nervous system purication. It
cleanses and strengthens the nervous system and the
subtle energy channels throughout the body. This series
is only introduced when the student has mastered the
primary series. It follows the same progression (sun
salutations, standing, sitting etc.) as the primary series,
but introduces new poses and variations.
The four advanced series are called Sthira Bhaga,
which means divine stability. Pattabhi Jois originally
outlined two intensive advanced series, but later
subdivided them into four series to make them accessible
to more people. These series emphasize difcult arm
balances and are only appropriate for extremely
advanced students. There are very few students
practicing beyond the second series.

nbeknown to many of the tourists who visit
Phuket, the resorts in which they stay are owned,
run and managed by true Phuketian families
who have handed down the responsibility of their

However, today, there is a new generation of these families

Im actually very lucky, as when I was younger I always dreamt
of working in the industry I work in today, hospitality and
tourism. Coming from Phuket, my father, who was originally
involved in the banking industry, knew a lot of people working in
the islands tourism industry and I was lucky to be able to visit a
number of the islands hotels and resort from a very young age.
It also gave me a chance to meet the people who run these
hotels and learn about what they done for a living. From this
time I knew I wanted to work in this industry and here I am
today as the General Manager of my familys hotel business.
What led you into your given career now?
I have to admit that my father gave this opportunity. This is a
small family run business, and as Im the only sibling, after I
nished university I came straight back to Phuket to help him
run the business. My father was also very lucky, as after he
retired from banking he was advised to invest his money in
a hotel, and had he not done so he would not have this very
popular hotel and I would not be in the position Im in now.
If someone met you for the rst time how would you
describe yourself to them?
If were talking in a business sense then I think I would say Im
a newcomer to this industry but am willing to learn and take
advice from others I come across who have knowledge and
experience in tourism.
On a personal level, I think most people I meet for the
first time would believe that Im a shy person, but I
would actually say Im a fun loving person who loves to
spend quality time with my friends and family. Im also a
very easy going person who loves and feels very
comfortable being around big groups of people.
Theres also a very different side of me which you will
nd out more about later in the interview.
Can you tell us where you like to go
out and what you do in your spare
time?
Usually, after nishing work I like to go to a
nice restaurant with friends to unwind from
my business day. Were so lucky here in
Phuket to have so many restaurants that
have such beautiful locations. My personal
favourite is a restaurant at the top of Khao
Rang Hill, the food is amazing and the
views are absolutely spectacular!
However, at the weekends, when I have a
bit more time to myself, I like to partake in
some of the islands adventure activities.
At the moment, my favourite is zip-lining,
we have only recently been able to do this,
and I love the thrill of ying through the
trees of our natural and untouched forests.
Its an amazing experience which any visitor
to Phuket should try.
www.phuketindex.com 21
Where do you see yourself in ve years?
I think I will still be working here at Royal Phawadee
Village, but maybe the resort will see some
changes during that time. It is also a dream of
mine to expand and have more businesses in the
hospitality industry. But I can guarantee I will still
be working in the industry as it is something Im
so passionate about.

Whats the best piece of advice someone has
ever given you?
The one thing that comes to mind is something that
my father always tells me, and that is we should
give from a generous heart. If we give and we
expect something in return, we are not really giving
from a pure motive. But when we give from a generous
heart, the joy of giving becomes its own reward, and
positive energy can come back to you in some very
unpredictable ways.
Please would you tell us something that most
people wouldnt know about you?
As I said earlier, most people believe Im a very shy
and quiet person, and most wouldnt expect me to
do anything like zip-lining. But one thing they dont
know is I also like ring guns at the shooting range,
and Im actually very good at it. For me, theres
nothing like the thrill and excitement of ring a gun
and hitting a bullseye.
Social Life
Social Talk
Do you think that Phuket has enough to offer for young
people living here?
In recent times, there have been quite a large number of cafes
which have opened up in Phuket, and I believe quite a few of
these have opened because of changes in what youngsters like
to do. I now see so many youths hanging out and soclialising in
cafes. The trend for young people has changed a lot, they now
like to take photos with their phones and share what they are
doing on social media sites, and cafes and similar venues are
places that satisfy their needs.
How would you describe your style and do you follow any
fashions and trends?
Im not a real fashionista, and I dont tend to follow any trends.
Unfortunately, sometimes whats in fashion is not suitable for
everybody to wear, so I try to choose things that suit me and
that Im condent and comfortable wearing.
What do you like and dislike about Phuket the most?
What I like the most is that Phuket is such a small province and
everyone knows and helps each other. Its very much like one
large family. And what I dislike is the way people drive. Having
lived in Bangkok before and then coming back here, it was a real
shock, and I really dont like driving here.
Do you have any role models, if so who are they and why?
I would have to say my father. He is a very nice guy who has
such a good heart and loves sharing. He is also a very clever
businessman and I have been able to learn so much from him.

Adventure
Having already experienced one of the islands zip line
adventures, I was pretty optimistic that Tarzan Adventure
would be pretty much of the same thing, simply zipping
from tree to tree suspended by a cable. However, as soon
as I arrived on site I realized there was so much more to
Tarzan Adventure than I originally anticipated.
Yes, Tarzan Adventure is a zip line experience; however,
the 42 stations, spread over 20 rai of forested land in Cape
Panwa, do not only feature only zip lines, but also a range
of challenging but fun obstacles including swing bridges
(15), net bridges (3), sling walks (3), rope walks (2), a
climbing wall and even a skateboard, all of which hang no
less than 10 meters above the ground.
The course starts off similar to any other zip lining experience,
but this adventure isnt just about relaxing in your harness
whilst zip ling and taking in the views, the ones of which
at Tarzan Adventure are absolutely breathtaking, but this takes
real physical effort, you are literally taking on an assault course
in the sky, and towards the end of the course you will see, as I
did, that even the ttest have had their bodies given a true test
of stamina.
Anybody wanting to take on this assault course in the sky can
do so in the knowledge that they are being led by a professional
team of highly trained staff, not only in zip lining itself, but also
rescue and rst aid. In addition, you are doing a zip line course
that features the very latest in safety systems, an un-detachable
carabiner (Coudou Pro), which allows continuous movement
along the course without having to disconnect at any time. This
is of course along with the usual other safety equipment such as
full body harness, helmet and regular carabiner hook, the latter
also meaning you are even more safe in the knowledge that you
are attached to the cable not only once but twice during your
adventure. It also makes it a lot more suitable for children.

ather than warming their beds

of both residents and visitors
to Phuket who would rather maintain
their health by partaking in an early
morning run, be it in one of the islands
parks where runners can enjoy the vast
amounts of ora and fauna on display,
on one of the stretches of golden sanded
beaches whilst listening to the waves
crash down besides them, or for those
braver runners, on the busy roads as cars
speed past. Of course, these runners
dont only enjoy running in the mornings,
for some, running at sunset or the end of
the day is one of their favorite things to
do. There are also some, who enjoy the
added thrill of running after dark, as its
a bit more intense, perhaps even a little
bit spooky. However, most are sensible
enough to avoid running in the heat and
humidity of the day, and putting themselves
at risk of dehydration, heat stroke and
other heat-related illnesses.
The runners we talk about in the previous
paragraph are what some might class as
casual runners, or perhaps even joggers,
those who simply love the feeling they
get from running. However, there are also
many runners here in Phuket who strive
to beat their personal records, break the
records of others, and cross the nish line
rst in races.
But it doesnt matter whether youre a fun
or serious runner, there are a number of
fantastic routes people can try, and there
are also now international races taking
place on the island for those who like a

Since 2005, the Laguna Phuket International Marathon has
been a part of the international calendar as one of the top
marathon events in Asia, especially for the general running-
community. Maybe not listed amongst the elite marathons
of the world, the Laguna Phuket International Marathon is
organized by a private company. However, the race-route has
been approved by the AIMs and about 6,000 athletes are part
of this annual event, representing over 50-countries.
The event always features a Marathon, Half Marathon,
10.5K Run, 5K Community Walk and a 2K Kids Run, and is
a fun and family oriented affair. The race course has water
stations every 2K providing water, sponges, electrolytes and
fruits. Mobile toilets are placed at regular intervals and the
course is marked at every kilometre.
What sets Laguna Phuket international sports events apart
is the fact theyre a big fundraising platform for the Laguna
Phuket Foundation and all of its CSR and community
outreach programmes.
The Course
The Laguna Phuket International Marathon is a simple race-route that
takes athletes out of Laguna Phuket integrated resort, and towards
local villages. Most of the route passes through some brilliant countryside
and the roads are quite smooth and relatively flat. There is a lot of
visual beauty to aid the fast, at route that poses no real challenge to
the athletes. Temperatures, in the region, can get quite high so the
early start to the race is always welcome. However, athletes who take
too long to nish will get sucked into the high-humidity and temperature
problems that come from being in this part of the world.
From its humble beginnings with less than 2,000 participants the
event has grown to a size of more than 4,000 participants, with an
average of 1,500 international participants from 50 countries.
Dates have not yet been set for the 2015 event, but information will
be available via http://phuketmarathon.com soon.

Phuket is a beautiful and very hilly island, in fact, the
word Phuket comes from a Malay word bukit which
actually means Hill. Any one of the islands hills offers
a viewpoint of some kind where you can appreciate
heart-stopping views across the land and out into the
Andaman Sea, and luckily many of viewpoints are
easily reachable at many spots, being only a short
walk through the jungle or the bush from the road,
and the most popular ones you can drive to.

n recent times a lot more people on Phuket have become
interested in bird photography, and youll often see
photographers, both professionals and amateurs, carrying a
camera and lens on their way to one of the islands naturally
landscaped areas to catch some images of their favorite, and
sometimes rare, two-legged vertebrates. However, we must
appreciate that wildlife photography isnt easy, especially when it
comes to birds, which arent exactly the most motionless of animals,
and are often in ight as soon as they hear the quietest of sounds.
Phuket now has a number of bird photography groups whose
members routinely venture out to the islands and neighboring
provinces forests and sit patiently waiting to capture images of
one, or hopefully more, of Thailands 982 species of these
feathered friends, to share on their groups Facebook page.
Phuketindex.com has recently been lucky enough to have talked to
one of these people, Khun Danai Plikomol, founder of Phuket Bird
Club, who in the following article will tell you his story of becoming
a keen bird photographer as well as giving some tips and technical
advice for those interested in the subject.

Please introduce yourself
I am Phuketian and use my free time away from my pharmacist job to partake in
my favorite pastime, photography, a subject Ive had a keen interest in since the
flm era of photography, right up until now, the digital age. However, there is one
subject matter I like to photograph more than any other, and thats birds, particularly
those who are habitants of our wonderful forests. Prior to photographing these
wonderful specimens I had often visited forested areas and seen a variety of
colorfully feathered birds and watched their behavior, this really boosted my
interest in birds, and I was soon photographing and recording the species I was
lucky enough to have seen and sharing my material with others with such a keen
interest. I believe when people get to really learn and understand the importance
of birds and nature they are likely to expand their interest to other creatures in our
ecological system.
The establishment of Phuket Bird Club
After a time of going out taking pictures of birds and sharing my stories and
pictures to a group of my photographer friends they subsequently began to become
more interested in what I was doing and wanted to join me, the number was so
great that I decided to open the Phuket Bird Club Facebook page to serve as a
channel of communication, informing about and showcasing the birds of Phuket.
The group now has members not only in Phuket, but all over the country.
Where to photograph birds
In Phuket were fortunate to have 3 places
where many bird species can be found;
Suang Luang Rama 9 Park in Phuket City,
and Bangpae Waterfall and the Khao Phra
Thaeo National Park in Thalang. In addition
theres also the neighboring Sri Phang Nga
National Park, an area which is ideal for bird
photography.
The best time to photograph birds
Its best to shoot either early in the morning
or closer to the evening. Youll fnd that early
morning or later afternoon provides the best
opportunities, because the birds are hungry
and are looking for food. I personally prefer to
shoot early in the morning as I have come to
notice the birds are most active at this time.
What equipment is best?
The camera equipment is the most important
part of bird photography, and its best for
those taking up the hobby to invest in a fast
DSLR camera and one or more telephoto
lens. For me its important to have a camera
which has an ISO setting, this allows you to
capture clearer images and the noise from
the camera is minimal. It also makes for perfect
shots in a variety of lighting conditions.
But the most important thing is the lens,
the lens size should be at least 200mm but
300mm is much better. This size lens is very
popular amongst bird photographers and its
like this lens was made for shooting birds.
The price can go into several thousand baht,
but if youre that keen on getting the best
shots its worth the investment.
Furthermore, if youre going to take your bird
photography seriously you should also be
investing in a tripod and camouaged tent,
allowing you to take photos dis-
cretely in the birds natural
environment.
www.phuketindex.com 37
natural light you need to keep that shutter speed nice and fast.
In other words, you need a good sunny day!
Ways to photograph birds
Birds will almost always y away if you get too close to them,
so instead wait for them to come to you. If you wait patiently long
enough, then birds will often land just a few feet away from you,
once they realize youre not a threat.
Always use cover to conceal yourself whenever possible. By
blending in with natural surroundings, remaining quiet and motionless,
birds will not fear you and will often come within a few steps near
you. The best idea is to fnd a birdy area, settle in a comfortable
position and wait for the birds. If you master concealing techniques
and be patient enough you will learn how to approach birds really
close to get awesome shots.
The conclusion from Khun Danai
Bird photography is very diffcult because there
are a number of environmental factors and
constraints, but if youre patient you will soon
learn the best way to get the best shots. You
can chose to either keep your captured images
private or sharing them within a group, but this
is always down to your own personal preference.
You can also publish your stories and pictures
through various media outlets which often
help bird researchers, but its always
necessary to have photographic evidence
and data to back up your story.

Camera settings
Its very important to know what settings to choose in certain
situations to get the most from your camera.
Exposure - DSLR cameras have a range of exposure modes,
they also have a set of special modes for specific types of
photography, such as landscapes, but these can be ignored for
our purposes.
Birds are usually constantly on the move so you need a fast
shutter speed to freeze them. Also, long lenses magnify the
movement in your gear, so this also calls for a fast shutter
speed. However, long lenses also tend to be slow. Adding
teleconverters makes them even slower and further magnifes
any movement. As a result, you always want to know that you
will be using the fastest shutter speed available for the given
light level, and that means you need to keep your aperture at
its widest usable setting.
Aperture - priority mode is therefore the best setting for almost
all bird photography; because it lets you fx a
wide aperture, and have the camera set the
shutter speed accordingly.
Aperture - Personally I fnd the best Aperture
setting for photographing birds in ight is f/5.6.
I always make this my starting point. On a nice
sunny day, setting your camera to Aperture
Priority and shooting with f/5.6 should result in a
shutter speed of 1/1000th of a second or faster.
Setting a low Aperture F number also results
in a bird that stands out from the background
(highly recommended).
If on the other hand you want a natural
photo of a bird and its surroundings, then
I recommend using a higher Aperture
F number, for example f/7 or higher.
Remember the higher you go the more

On May 22nd 2014, after several months of political conict, the Thai Military decided there was no other option than to take
control of the country via a military coup. Since taking power, the military junta has announced a number of measures, some
bring reconciliation to the country, and others, of which Phuket has already beneftted, aimed at improving the experiences of
travellers, Thai and international as they visit Thailands many attractions, the results of which has seen all vendors evicted
from the islands beaches.

Phukets Beaches
The province launched the operation in June and every day since, all man-made structures,
beach umbrellas and sunbeds have been removed from most of the islands west coast beaches.
The encroachment has degraded both the beauty and the ecological system of the beaches,
which are public property. Phuket governor has expressed his hope that the cleanup would
return natural beauty to the famous beaches and be able to attract many more tourists in the
near future.

Surin Beach
Once called Golden Sand Beach by HM King Bhumibol and HM Queen Sirikit, Surin Beach was the rst
beach to be cleared of vendors and restaurants, possibly because of the vast expansion in commercial
development it has seen over the past few years, and is set to be the model of how Phukets beaches
should have been, and remain. Operations commenced on 11th June and by 27th June 27th the entire
beach was clear of all tables, sunbeds and umbrellas and all structures were gone. No more beach clubs,
no cocktail bars, and no more sofa beds.

Kata
Perhaps not the most illegally overdeveloped of Phuket beaches, but with possibly the most
unsightly illegal structures, the 1.5-km stretch of Kata Beach has seen the removal of a number of
illegal foreshore beach establishments, mostly of which were restaurants and massage shops.
Luckily, a large number of the beach buildings were temporary structures, unlike other beaches
where large concrete structures have been built, and were therefore a lot easier and quicker to
demolish.

Patong Beach
Although its Phukets most popular tourist attraction, unfortunately the 3.5-kilometre Patong Beach
also had the largest number of illegal vendors, food stalls, massage huts and stalls. However, on
July 8th beach and umbrella operators began clearing their businesses off Patong Beach and
other vendors quickly fooled suit removing their illegal structures. Now that these have gone, tourists
have been ocking to Patong to enjoy sunbathing and swimming and enjoy the beach in its pristine
state.

Karon municipality actually removed a large number of its illegal beach businesses off the sand a couple of years ago;
however, all the illegal structures that remained or had been re-erected have now been removed, albeit at a lot slower
rate than other areas. Vendors, loungers and umbrellas are no more, once again the beach belongs to everyone, and
locals and tourists have the chance to enjoy the real natural surroundings Karon beach has to offer.

benets for young children - some of which they will appreciate for
the rest of their lives.
It is one of the most physically demanding of all dance styles, and

These factors, along with others, have seen a large increase
in the number of music schools opening around the world.
Parents now realise how easy it is to get noticed, and now
believe, should their child have an interest, that investing in a

while than ever before. This is especially the case with parents
in Phuket, who in recent years have seen youngsters born and

Bringing Music to the Island

Please tell us about your background
I was born in Phuket and studied at Phukets Thai Hua and
Wittayalai Schools; I then took a bachelors degree at Sirindhorn
International Institute of Technology within Thammasat
University, and also received a scholarship for a masters
degree at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden. Both
my degrees were in Chemical Engineering, a course I decided
to take because my family operates a swimming pool and
water treatment business and I originally thought I would
want to be involved in the family business.
With regards to music, I started playing the keyboard at 10
years old, I later moved on to playing a Yamaha Electone
which I learnt to play at the Yamaha Music School in Bangkok
and also at home. At the school I was taught by Khun Sittiporn
Prasertpol, and I spent virtually all my school holidays there. It
was at this time my father started to think about opening a
music school in Phuket, not only for me to learn more but also
so other youths in the area could learn to play an instrument
closer to home. At the time the only option was to send kids to
Bangkok to learn, there was no high standard music school
here in Phuket. I would like to add that during my time learning
the Yamaha Electone I tried for six consecutive years to join
the Electone Solo competition, in the sixth year I actually
made it and won second prize at the Yamaha Thailand Music
Festival.
How did P.K. Inter Music Ltd come about?
It was, for a long time, the Limpanichs familys dream to
open a music school; both my father and I have been passionate
about music for as long as we can both remember. It was in
2004 our family dream became reality as P.K. Inter Music Ltd.
was born. However, over time weve always sought to improve
and expand the business, and in the last couple of years
weve started to see that expansion happen.
Today, along with having two branches of Yamaha Music
School, we also have two branches of Phuket International
Dance Academy (PIDA); the branches for each of these
learning centres are located at the Big C Department Store on
Bypass Road and on Yaowarat Road in Taladyai. In addition,
we have more recently opened the Sound Gallery, a distribution
centre for all Yamaha music products which follows Yamahas
Touch the Real Pro concept, where customers can
touch, test and play an instrument until they find the
right one for them, and the Yamaha Digital Audio
Creative Center (YDACC), a facility which provides
engineers, practitioners, sound operators and owners
a place to test, evaluate and learn how to use
Yamahas digital equipment.
Can you tell us more about these
businesses?
Yamaha Music School is world renown, with
schools in 47 countries around the world. The school
provides a unique method of teaching music that
allows everyone, from small children to adults, to learn
music in a consistent education system. The courses
are designed for a broad range of students from
beginners to those who wish to acquire a high-level of
music ability, as well as pre-school children as the
basis. In addition, we also hold concerts every 6
months to serve as a space for students to show their
skills. Its also a chance for us to select students who
we believe are likely to be successful and who can go
on to compete at a national levels at the Yamaha
Thailand Music Festival, the winner of which receives
a trophy and represents Thailand in international
competitions.
We also use the Yamaha Grade Examinations
System, one of the few examinations that evaluate
students improvisational skills in addition to the
standard repertoire performance, sight reading and
aural tests. The tests begin with the students Grade
10 to 6 and continue with the teachers diplomas
Grade 5 to 3. Adapted by more than 30 countries, this
test is recognized by many academic institutes around
the world. All Yamaha teachers must pass this test to
qualify as certied instructors to teach Yamaha Music
Education System courses.
Phuket International Academy (PIDA) provides
experience and education through the performing arts.
Through well-taught, structured classes, injected with
fun and enthusiasm, students develop strength, agility,
coordination, secure posture, rhythm, exibility and

musicality. Most importantly, self-condence and self-esteem
emerge naturally from expert dance instruction. We use the
same syllabus as the ATOD from Australia which the dancers
from the Hollywood movie Step Up 2 were also taught, and
our students also partake in dance performances such as
the American animated musical Mulan and lastest Disney
animation Frozen. Some of the children chosen to perform at
our shows have gone on to perform at Phukets Simon Star
Theatre.
Finally, we have the Sound Gallery, known in the Yamaha
world as BeatSpot, a one-stop musical instrument shop with
emphasis on high quality Yamaha equipment suitable for the
needs of local aspiring music enthusiasts. Sound Gallery is
the best place to see, try, and buy Yamaha musical instruments
and it provides a convenient way for customers to shop for
musical instruments with affordable prices and many options.
The shop allows musicians to select instruments by testing
and getting experience with the products before they buy. If a
student wants to take their learning seriously, by purchasing
their instrument of choice they will also have the opportunity to
learn to play at home. In the future we want to bring in popular
artist to put on workshops to show just what the instruments
can really do.
Have you come across any Phuket
youths who have a real musical talent?
Since weve opened I have noticed a considerable improvement
in the level of talent we have here in Phuket. Im extremely
grateful that some students from our school have competed
on a national level and been successful, most notably the
singer - Gam Wichayanee who was winner of the nationwide
TV show The Star, and also Hitoshi Miyashita a classical
guitarist who has gone on to win awards at the International
Classic Guitar Championship. Weve also had a number of
students compete in the Yamaha Thailand Music Festival, and
over the years weve had a student win in almost category.
However, it isnt just us that should take praise from this, its
also the parents, theyre a huge part in supporting and helping
their children.
What would you say to anyone
considering studying at Yamaha Music
School or PIDA?
First, I would like to thank the parents from Phuket who
have supported their children and have had the condence
in our schools. Children should be allowed to practice sport
or music to help develop their capacity as an individual,
and a lot of what they learn here will be carried through to
their adult and working lives. My advice for anyone
interested or who has a child interested in learning what
we teach is to get them here early, from 3-4 years old for a
Junior Music Course, at this age they listen and if exposed
to learning at this age they will learn easily and thoroughly.
If they can distinguish music at this age and start to play an
instrument they will have a very high potential to play at a
high level. However, our school is open to any ages who
are interested, and I invite them to come and see what we
offer, we welcome everybody.

ue to economic and technological advances, most major cities
around the world are developing very fast. But sadly, when new
and modern business centres are developed, historical sites are
sometimes forgotten, or sometimes even demolished. Unfortunately,
as a result of continued modernisation the young population of these areas
becomes detached from their cultural identities. It becomes easier for them to
leave home to nd opportunities elsewhere. However, luckily, in 1992, the
Department of Public Administration and the Ministry of Interior selected
Phuket municipality as a pilot municipality in urban environment management
and the then mayor came up with the idea to conserve the Old Town of
Phuket. This included the municipality preserving the old buildings known
as Sino-Portuguese (a.k.a. Sino-Colonial) architecture, and it was the local
people in the old town who formed a group to take the lead in preserving the
areas historical buildings.
Due to the success of this project, in 2000 the
municipality was awarded the City of Identity by
the Urban Development Fund, and in more recent
times young people have started to return to the
Old Town of Phuket. In the past, young people
who left Phuket to pursue higher education rarely
returned to establish careers back home. The
restoration of the Old Town has changed their
mindsets. Many of them have come back to start
their own tourism-related businesses, such as
restaurants, hostels, and cafes in the buildings
their families have lived and conducted business
in for so long.
Old Phuket Town features many Sino-Portuguese
style buildings, which reects the early settlement
here by the Chinese, and the subsequent arrival of
the Portuguese who came to exploit the tin mining
industry of those days.
The main characteristics of Sino-
Portuguese properties are that they
have architectural features almost
identical to those of European buildings;
these include label stops, cornices,
and window shutters which really highlight
where European style wood carving meets
with Chinese wood carving, a central
courtyard to let in natural sunlight, and the
outstanding feature of this style, beautifully
decorated cecrete oor tiles. The walls were
usually partly decorated with ceramic tiles,
and the interiors furnished with Chinese-
style furniture.
The preservation of Old Phuket Town
not only makes local people proud of their
identity, but has also led to nancial benets
as the area has became a famous tourist
attraction.

really is a revolutionary entertainment system for your TV.
It supports up to Full HD 1080P video decoding, online
Digital TV
Unfortunately, terrestrial DVBT2 signals have
not yet come in Phuket so theres no point in
purchasing a digital set top box in the hope you
can watch digital TV. However, by purchasing
an Android TV box you can do so ahead of time.
Signals are broadcast in full HD (720P or 1080i),
and depending on the application used, you may
even be able to watch your favourite programs
and sports events from your home country, live!
ash video up to 1080P and also Adobe Flash and
HTML5. It also allows you to surf the Internet hassle
free.
Android TV Boxes use the latest Android Operation
Software identical to that on a mobile or tablet, the only
difference is that the box has no sim-card slot and no
built-in display. But what makes an Android TV Box
so impressive is the processing power it has under its
cover, large processor, big RAM and a quality graphics
card gives you a performance similar to that of any
home computer and allows you to run high denition
applications smoothly.
Members of the Phuketindex.com team have been
using an Android TV Box for some time now and have
been so impressed with its functionality and the value
for money it provides that we thought we should share
all the details about them with you.

YouTube
We all know you can use YouTube pretty
much anywhere, be it via a mobile, computer
or tablet, but none of these allow you to
enjoy videos on a big screen. Via an Android
TV box you can watch any music video on YouTube on
a big screen at full HD. Just access YouTube via your
browser, search for the video you want and enjoy. Perhaps
music TV channels will soon be a thing of the past.
TV & Movies
on Demand
With an Android TV Box,
you can make a selection from a huge
library of movies, music and television
shows any time you want. The title is yours
to enjoy as often as you like. You can even
pause, rewind, fast-forward or stop the title
and return to it later. Continue from where
you left off, or start from the beginning.
Youre in control. There are also a number
of applications that allow you to view TV &
Movies on Demand from America, Britain,
Korea, Japan, etc.
World TV
Whether youre looking for
free live Football, want to
watch a specic episode of
your favourite American TV Series, or want
to catch up on your favourite TV dramas
from any corner of the globe, an Android
TV Box allows you to stream to your TV
whenever you wish. Please be sure to use
a reputable subscription based provider to
avoid any disappointment.
Video Games
Android has a number of games which are fun
for mobile devices, but it also has some very
graphic intensive games which are much more
enjoyable on a big screen. All you need to enjoy
these to the fullest is a USB or wireless compatible video game pad.
Video Conference
All you need to do is set up your webcam in front
of the TV and you can video chat with your friends
or family who are on the other side of the world.
The great thing about an Android TV box is that
everyone in the living room can join in the conversation; this is
perfect for those special occasions or holidays where family
members are not present. Skype is a very popular app for video
chat and is free from the Google Play Store.

n addition to its scenery, a beautiful natural attraction,
there is another beautiful aspect to Phuket, its man-
made architecture, be it in the form of a hotel, resort,
condominium, shophouse or villa, with designs that
are not only historical, or sometimes state-of-the-art, but
are also usually sound investments and a tangible asset.
It was the islands architecture that really caught the
attention of a Phuket born girl named Pawitra Bureerak
(Khun Rose), who from a child felt a real passion for
architectural design, and after recently graduating with
honors in Architecture (International Program) at King
Mongkuts University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT),
is one step closer to seeing her dream of creating a piece
of architecture for her homeland becoming a reality.

problems. Such advances arent always obvious to
the naked eye, but many modern buildings are full
of exciting innovations that make them far friendlier
to Mother Nature than their predecessors. Whether
they add green space i nto our urban j ungl es or
power up usi ng renewabl e energy, structures
designed with sustainability in mind are becoming
more common. For me this is the solution to keep the
beauty of Phuket among the expansion of proper-
ti es. If you fol l ow the archi tectural trends from
around the world, you will see that many countries have
shifted to creating architecture that is safe and useful
among the changes of nature.
As an example, I had a
prototype design named
Genesis Resort, and
at the initial stage of
designing this resort
I realized that due to
problems brought about
as a result of the islands tourism development that I
should not use a standard design concept. Our tourism
industry has consumed so much natural resources that
there is no longer a good balance and this is mainly
due to the construction of resorts. So in this project I
aimed to search for solutions so that the construction
of the resort would preserve as much nature as possible
and have a good balance of natural, or green, and standard
materials. The architecture of Genesis is a solution to
preventing problems, and this project will also generate
mangrove forests which are an important part of our
ecological system.
What does it take to be a great architect?
An architect does not only designs buildings; they must
reect history, user behavior and societys beliefs and
attitudes. Architects need to consider many issues not
just what looks nice, we must understand construction
aspects, resources, environmental impact, material durability
and have an understanding of how the environment
effects the mixture of materials used. This knowledge is
what makes an architect what we call intellectual, skillful
and professional, but being a great architect we must
practice to use our creative skills and freedom to design
and innovate new architecture. I believe this is the hardest
skill to practice. We have to forget the previous knowledge
that is the enemy of creativity in order to build up the
sense of wonder and create great architecture.
In addition, the modern information age, which is highly
competitive and moving so fast, doesnt allow for designers
to only have technical knowledge. We must be innovators
who can multi task; an architect should be able to handle
many co-rel ated j obs si mul taneousl y. We have to
understand the idea of marketing and business as well
as making projects a reality and successful in the age of
a creative economy.

When we asked Khun Rose why she wanted to be an architect
her reply was A good architect is one that cannot just think and
do desi gns, but one that can produce functi onal desi gn
solutions that are workable within their environment. An architect
must be a person who is able to transfer little ideas into bigger
ideas. This is a good innovator.
Although she is still a young girl, she is already Managing Director
of Cher Architects Company Limited and Chervista Company
Limited, both businesses of which are attractive because of
their unique concepts, and Phuketindex.com were lucky to have
a chance to talk with Khun Rose, a new generation of architect
in Phuket, and to see her vision of architecture.
How important is architecture to Phukets tourism
industry?
Architecture is a story; a building can tell us about the past and
also the future. A building is just a building, but a well designed
building can touch peoples hearts. This is especially the case in
a place such as Phuket, a world-class tourist city that welcomes
people from different countries who are appreciative of architecture.
Of course, our tourism industry is tied to the tastes of the
people, and we need to ensure that our designs have a clear
identity and meet the tourists needs.
In my opinion eco-friendly buildings are the best way forward
for Phuket. When it comes to sustainable architecture, going
green is all about nding alternative solutions to decades-old

concept, and its the only one stop
bedroom specialist in Phuket. The
idea to start this business came
about because Khun Roses family
already has decades worth of
experience supplying the islands
hospitality businesses with a range of hospitality products
such as bed linens and mattresses. And having witnessed
growth in the islands condominium and affordable housing
markets, Khun Rose decided to focus purely on providing a
bedroom design businesses. She realizes that successful interior
design companies are already well established here on the island,
but most are not aimed at the condo and affordable housing sector,
and with a large niche in this market, this is the area where Khun
Rose sees the best opportunity and therefore markets her product
to those people living a simple yet exotic and unique lifestyle.
Khun Rose said The bedroom is a space where a person spends
a great deal of their time and has a different use to other areas
of their house or condo. A bedroom isnt just to sleep; its a major
relaxation area for a great number of people and should therefore
be designed to reect the users identity with an emphasis on
comfort and relaxation.
We work with every aspect of the bedroom from the mattress
through to the dcor theme, and we aim to ensure each and
every project we work on is unique. In addition, we also produce
bedroom accessories under our Chervista brand which focus on
minimal designs, simplicity, durability and multi-functional use.
