yet which is fantastic to see. The
newsletters slightly changing this month
with a few new bits and pieces, I hope you

activities or at the next meeting.

Hi All

It was great to
see so many Opiki members attending last
months grand final week celebrations down
at Lincoln. Grand final week is young
farmers marquee event for the year and is a
great chance for like-minded people from all
over the country to get together. Next year
the Grand final will be held in the first
weekend of July in Taupo which will give
many members the opportunity to attend. In
regards to next years competition for those
people wishing to compete, district finals are
to be held in November and December.

Looking forward to upcoming events August
is typically a quiet time for Opiki club as
many members are flat out calving. Looking
further down the track the committee is
committed to putting on a couple of low key
social events to allow members to get
together and get to know people better.
Also cranking up the Christmas party
possibly at a date in late November is on the
cards. Members also showed an interest in
putting a team in a social sporting event. If
anyone has ideas about how any of these
events can be run don't be shy to let your
opinions be heard.

We were fortunate to have Fraser from
'Dairy Vet' come and talk to us at our
meeting. His key points were around feeding
the modern dairy cow so that she can utilise
her genetic potential which is now around
650 kg MS/season, where the average dairy
cow in New Zealand is production 350 kg
MS. The key take home message from his
talk was that if cows are fed well in early
lactation (now) then it avoids problems such
as ketosis and it will ensure her appetite is
not depressed and she it set up to utilise the
spring flush of grass in October and
November and convert that cheap feed into
milk. If members want to have more guest
speakers at meetings and have ideas on who
could talk then let us know.

Do you want Rosie?

Free to a good home, 2 year old heading dog.
Giving her away as I can't take her to my
new job and she is going crazy sitting around
at home. Rosie needs to be out on a farm
running around. She can work sheep, shes
just a bit rusty at the moment.
I am very reluctant to get rid of her as she
is a real character
and great natured
dog.

any questions or
interest.

Cheers,
Luke Roberts
